Solar Power

"We have to go, Canada." David says after a while.

"I don't want to go. I can't leave them."

"We have to, Canada. You know that they would've wanted us to end this."

"I know."

"Come on, Canada. Where are they headed?"

I close my eyes, and visions start flashing. Visions of them running past our home, but they don't stop. They just keep running, until they pass a sign that reads, 'Welcome to New York!'

"New York. They're going to the biggest compound in the states." I explain.

"Of course they are. The trainees are there, they have no defenses, and they're thirsty as ever."

"Yeah, not to mention the vampire's going through human blood withdrawals."

"Great, they have access to one of the greatest super powers known to man. What does that make us?"

"Makes us going on a suicide mission."

"That's what we said about this one, and we're still alive." David shrugs.

"But they aren't." I point to our parents.

"I'm sorry. I'm trying to be more optimistic."

"Me too."

"We better get going, then." David suggests.

"Yeah- Just one minute?" I ask. I search around the forest for a quick second, then find a single flower. I lay on the lap of our parents, and nod. "Let's get going."

We stare for a minute longer, then take off running to New York.

Who knew that The Big Apple can be a ghost town? We bolt through the empty streets, not having to avoid any cars, or bicycles, or anything like that. Just run straight through, until we reach the compound. We cross through the barrier that shields it from the rest of the world, and watch as the mansions surrounded by woods surrounds us.

The place is already a mess. Some of the trees have been uprooted, greenery thrown about, and bodies of vampire's litter the floor. This is a stark contrast to the usual clean upkeep that the runners prefer. The sounds of feet scampering throughout fill our heads, and a person comes out of the woods, weapon pointed.

"Halt, in the name of our rulers!" They cry out. "Who goes there?"

"I could ask you the same thing." I reply.

"Hello, Wayward's, we've been expecting you." They replied, a smirk forming on their lips. "Come with me."

"No!" A voice in the distance cries out over us. We turn our heads to look over at the entrance where a new army stands.

"The Italian's." I whisper under my breath.

"Leave the Councilwoman alone." The leader of the group says, and fires a warning shot. He fires his arrow right a our foe's feet.

"Mikah and Emma will find out about this." Our foe glares, before running into the council.

The Italian leader steps forward.

"It is a pleasure to be in your presence." The Italian coolly says, as if there wasn't a species, and inter-species, war.

"It's a pleasure to be in your. Thank you for coming." I nod at all of the warriors.

"I am Peter." The Italian man introduces.

"A pleasure to meet all of you. This is my brother, David."

"Hi."

"We were disheartened to hear of your parents passing. We would like to extend our greatest condolences to you." Peter says. "Our armies know about the risk of their lives that they are taking, and it is a risk that we all are willing to make."

"Thank you for your sacrifices. Reigna Na'im will not turn a blind eye to any of you. On to business. Our plan last time did eliminate most of Mikah and Emma's army, except for just Mikah and Emma. Another thing is, we lost just about everyone in our army. I take it you all have applied silver paint?"

"We have." Peter nods.

"Good. Do any of you have any ideas?"

"You're asking me?" Peter looks confused.

"Yes. Let's just face it, I'm young. I just got out of parole, Sure, I disabled a lot of Emma and Mikah's army, but... we lost all of our troops, and my parents. I don't want the same to happen here. Some casualties can be expected here, but I don't want to lose everyone."

"You speak beyond your age." Peter says.

"Thank you, do any of you have any ideas?"

A silent pause falls over all of us. Peter finally breaks it. "I was thinking, perhaps we could barge the castle. Get into every room. Tell them that they either join us, or let Reigna Na'im and the council decide their fate."

"How about groups? Some of us go into the castle, others of us wait outside, prepared to fight. Then, we take the castle." David suggests.

"I like it." I nod. "If that sounds best to all of you."

"I can get behind that." David nods.

"Very well. Remember to fight with mercy. Should you see Emma, unless she poses a present threat to you, please bring her to me."

"And Mikah?" Peter asks.

I pause for longer than I would have liked to. "Do the same."

We nod and go our separate ways. Peter starts to explain the plan to their troops.

"Do you think we can get lucky again?" David whispers in my ear.

"I don't know." I look down at the ground.

"If... If this is the last conversation we have with each other, know that I love you."

"I love you too."

"If I had a time machine, but I couldn't change the major events of today, I think I would... I think I would make sure that told Abigail and Matthias that I loved them."

"Me too."

The armies are now looking up at us, and I fear that they heard our last interaction. I quickly realize that they're looking to me for direction.

"I wish the best of luck to all of you. Remember to fight with intelligence, bravery, and most importantly, fight with mercy. It may be difficult, and I do not ask you to spare every life, but if they are under someone's control, draw on them with silver pain. Also, thank you all for your bravery. None of you will go unseen. For what it's worth, you're all heroes in my eyes. Thank you, and see you on the other side of this battle, wherever it may lead us."

All of the groups break off, and begin to take their positions. I walk into the castles, and the primary guards are shot by our first lines of defense. We walk into the first room on the right.

"This room is now under siege by the Vampric Council. Join our ranks, or perish." The Italian calls out.

"Please! Have mercy! I want no part in this."

She's small, and pale, and her hair is a mess. She's human. I can smell her blood. I walk over to her, and offer my hand. She stares at with optimism. She smiles, but then blinks hard a few times. An evil look in her eye suddenly takes over, and she grams my hand and twists it in a way that it makes me wonder if I'll be the first vampire to have a hand broken in a way that doesn't involve silver.

Is this how I'm going to die?

Someone runs over, and draws a silver line on her forehead, and she lets go. She looks like she did just a minute ago, when she was cowering in the corner.

"I'm so sorry."

"It's alright, it's wasn't you." I cup her face. "You're safe now."

"Thank you."

"Think you could tell me what happened?" I ask, kneeling so I'm on her level.

"I was walking home from school, 'cause it ended early, and then someone just grabbed me. I think he was a vampire."

"He was." I say. Terror takes over her little eyes. I shouldn't have said that, but she needs to know the truth. "We are, too. But we're the good kind, we're here to save you."

"You won't drink my blood?"

"I don't drink human blood, I promise." I brush her hair our of her face. "We're going to keep you safe, okay? Here, take this," I hand her one of the small daggers. She couldn't do any real damage with it, but it should scare off any enemies. "Be careful with it, if anyone comes near you, hold this up, it'll scare them off."

"What if it doesn't?" She asks.

"Trust me, it will. Good luck, kiddo."

"Thanks, you too." I smile at her, and we walk out of the room, and lock the door behind us. We walk through several other rooms, finding people to join our group, and people who wouldn't. I don't like having to kill people. As one of the Italian's says every time we leave a room we attacked, 'It's what needed to be done.'

All of the rooms have been gone through. We stand in the woods with the others in our army. We still have our weapons raised. We haven't seen Mikah or Emma at all.

That is, until we hear Mikah's voice.

"I see that you've regained your army." He calls out to our back, causing us to all turn around promptly. I walk so I'm at the front of the group again.

"I see you've done the same." I look him up and down.

"Leave us."

"You don't order my troops what to do."

"Your troops. Last time you were put in command, everyone died."

"And the same happened with you. I could do this all day," I retort. "Please, if you wouldn't mind, join with the others." I turn towards the small group of troops that followed me. They all run back to wherever we started. "What was so important that it couldn't be said in front of the people that I fight with?"

"I'd like to make you an offer."

"And why would I take it?"

"Because I think you should." I turn around to see Emma. She walks over to stand next to Mikah. "We can be a family again, you, and me, and David."

"Notice how you didn't say our parents." I cross my arms.

For once, I'm mad at her. I never thought I could be. She was so sweet, and kind.

"Doesn't matter, take his offer, please." Emma replies.

"That offer being?"

"I want you to surrender to me, go back to Antarctica, serve as our mole. Come back and help us really dominate." Mikah suggests.

"No."

"Don't deny him, Canada. Please, come with us." Emma grabs my hand.

"No, I won't do that. Neither should you, Emma. You know what he's doing is wrong, why would you even do this in the first place-"

"Irrelevant." Mikah interjects. "Don't bother with these stalling tactics. They won't work."

"They're working now, aren't they?" I ask. "Emma, come home, please."

"I am home."

"No you're not, and you know it. Come home, Emma."

Emma looks around at the environment around us, then says, in a voice almost too soft too hear, "I've destroyed my home."

"I'm still here, and so is David." I offer my hand out to her. "Please, come home."

"Emma!" Mikah shouts.

"How do I know they won't kill me?" She ignores Mikah.

"They'll know what's truly in your heart, goodness. Reigna Na'im is a fair and just ruler."

"This is nothing more than propaganda! Stop listening to her, Emma!" Mikah shouts, even louder than last time.

"Emma, please. Come home." She stares at the ground, and ponders her next actions. "I know this isn't you, Emma. There is, and will always be, good in you. You are kind, and wonderful. I could never have dreamed up a better sister. Yeah, things are pretty screwed up and yeah, it's going to be hard to get back to where we were, but it will happen, because I love you."

"EMMA! I ORDER YOU TO STOP LISTENING TO HER! She is corrupting you!"

Emma looks down at my head, and sucks her lips in, just like David did, to hold back her tears. "I love you, too." She grabs my hand. We nod and smile at each other for a while.

"Fine then, go with your sisterly love. Bury your dead, and make holes for those who will join them. I will not stop trying to end your reign until I've got it, or I am dead." Mikah says. "You have twenty minutes. No negotiations, no conversations, no surrender's. Tell your army to say their final prayers and goodbye's." Mikah spits out, the turn and runs away.

Emma and I finally wrap each other in a sisterly embrace. "Thank you." She whispers into my ear. "I was so lost."

"No, thank you." I look int her eyes, and smile. I've finally gotten my sister back. "We better get going. We've got a battle to plan."

We run back to the forest, hand in hand. David cuts us off, tackling his sister. "Is it-?" He cuts himself off.

"It is." I smile, and he wraps her in an embrace. "So, what's going on in the camp?" I ask once they've broke away.

David's expression suddenly turns grim. "Not good. Not good at all."

"What happened?"

"They found out about some of the tactic's those guys are using. We equate to a fifth of their army." We both turn our heads over to Emma.

"Yeah, about that." She agrees.

"So?"

"Everyone's getting ready to ship out of here, leave and go into hiding. We keep on thinking that their last fight will be their last one, but that never happens. We've been fighting for the past 24 hours," David gestures to the now rising sun, "People are exhausted."

"What are we going to do?" I ask our little triangle.

"Canada, I- I'm tired, too. I'm over this war. I just feel like this is going to be a never ending cycle until we get less lucky. I think I'm going to join them."

My own brother? I look at his expression, and he is exhausted. Any mortal would've passed out long ago. I don't want to force him to be here. I won't.

"Okay." I nod my head.

"I don't know when I'm going to see you again."

"Me neither."

"We just got my sister back, and now I'm leaving." David smiles sadly. "I'm sorry."

"If you're tired, you're tired." I say. "I understand."

"Thank you." David wraps both Emma and I in an embrace. He breaks away, then salutes, and walks back to where he came from. We walk out, and everyone stares at us. Though whether they're staring more at Emma or me, I will never know.

"Emma has since rejoined our ranks. Should you like to leave, I will allow you to do so." I announce to the crowd. I don't know what else I can stay. I don't want to force people to stay here.

One by one, people start to get up to leave. Soon, whole herds of the leave, one stops to stand right in front of Emma and I.

"I'm sorry it had to work out this way." She says.

"It's alright, I understand."

The last chunk of them leaves, making it just Emma and me, and whatever divergent's we can find.
