Chapter 9: Vanished 5-28-16
When the shark had landed, there was an enormous splash. Noah had thought that all of the water in that area would drain out, but it's the ocean so of course it hadn't. Doyle and Noah were soaked dripping wet from head to toe. Doyle looked out to the water again and saw the dark shadow of the shark. It began to swim in circles again slowly. The shark was so big it had to in order to not get scratched up by the boulder rocks.
Noah was speechless and so was Doyle, so they just looked at each other with their mouths wide open. It was a moment later that Doyle looked around slowly and realized Robin wasn't anywhere in sight.
"Robin?!" he yelled.
Then Noah realized too that she had disappeared. Where had she gone?
"Where is she?" Noah asked.
Doyle shrugged and kept shouting her name, panic struck upon his face. They gave a quick scan of the whole beach and only saw a family of four walking towards the beach. The only people they had seen today. Robin was gone.
Doyle walked into the water about waist deep and looked down into the water. Noah followed and joined him in the water. They didn't want to go too far because of the shark. Doyle had already had the unpleasant crossing of being too close to the enormous shark. He certainly didn't feel like doing it again.
Boys don't cry. They think that is unmanly and really embarrassing, but Noah saw that Doyle had glassy liquid shine over his eyes. He was trying not to blink and have a tear fall, but he failed. Noah looked the other way trying not to pay attention to Doyle. He didn't want to embarrass him.
Doyle rubbed his face and asked, "Why did I bring her into this?" his voice quiet and a little shaky.
Noah put his arm around him and said, "If you think about it, it's actually my fault. I was the one who saw this shark and told you about it. I didn't let it go, I kept thinking about it for over a week,"
"Thanks, but I didn't have to bring Robin, my own cousin, into this,"
"How about we have a snack break," Noah suggested happily trying to bring up the mood of both of them.
Doyle nodded sadly and they both walked out of the water and up to their beach bags. Noah pulled out two granola bars and two bananas. He handed one banana and one granola bar to Doyle and kept the other two things for himself. They crunched in silent on their bars.
"Hi boys!" said a voice from behind them.
Doyle nearly choked on his granola bar as he shouted,
"Robin!?" Doyle whorled around, but to be saddened to see that it was only his sister Nicki, "Oh it's you,"
"You are a silly grumpy monkey. Where did you get the name Robin from? We haven't seen our cousin Robin in months. Or do you have a girlfriend?" Nicki asked and stuck out her lips and giggled. Then she sat next to Noah.
"Hey Nicki," Noah said finishing his banana. He threw the bottom part of the banana in the sand for the seagulls.
"You guys look sad. The beach is supposed to be a fun place!" Nicki said and threw up her arms almost hitting Noah in the head. Then she continued with a more serious voice that indicated that Doyle was in trouble,
"Mommy and daddy were looking for you and getting worried. They said that you guys were probably at the beach so we all came here,"
"Where are mom and dad then?" asked Doyle without looking up. His head was pushed up against his knees all coiled up in a ball.
"They said that whoever found you guys first would get an ice cream sundae at home. And it looks like I found you, so I get a sundae! Yay" Nicki said excitedly.
"Great, good for you," said Doyle placing his uneaten banana back into Noah's bag carefully.
"Boy you sure are a grumpy monkey today. When mom and dad find us, I will tell them,"
Doyle rolled his eyes, if only he could tell her that her cousin was probably dead. But he couldn't because Noah, Robin, and himself had promised to keep the whole Megalodon shark thing a secret.
Noah's phone rumbled from inside his bag and he had got a text from his mom saying to please be home by 7pm. It was 6pm right now, so he had a little more time to stay at the beach and then he would have to leave. Or he could leave early to relive some tension.
"Might want to cheer up because here comes your dad," Noah whispered to Doyle.
Nicki saw that her dad was coming too and ran over to him. Then Noah and Doyle heard her tattling on Doyle about being a grumpy monkey. That what she always called him when Doyle was in a bad mood.
"Hi boys, how was the beach?" asked Doyle's dad trying to ignore Nicki's tattling.
Noah spoke up first,
"It was fun; we saw some sting ray and a shark. It was pretty cool!" Noah said happily. So technically he wasn't lying because they had seen a shark, but he hadn't said what kind.
"Great, mom should be here any moment. Good thing we found you two. Everything okay Doyle?"
"Yep, just great!" Doyle stood up and turned to look out toward the water one last time. Then scanned the beach, but only saw the family of four from earlier leaving and his mom walking briskly over to them.
Once she arrived she said,
"Looked like I lost, who won?"
"Me, me, me!!!" Nicki yelped and jumped around in front of her mom.
"Yay, good job hunny," her mom said and picked her up.
"Boy you are getting heavy," she said putting her down a minute later.
"Alright time to go back home boys. It was nice having you again Noah. As usual," Doyle's dad exclaimed. His mom nodded and gave Noah a big high five.
"Bye Doyle, have a good night! You too Nicki! Have fun eating your ice cream," Noah said standing and putting his bag over one shoulder and holding his surfboard in the other.
"It's a sundae!" Nicki said.
"Oh, okay. Bye guys!" Noah said waving at Doyle's family.
Noah walked up the sandy beach and gave one last glance toward the water. Over the past couple hours, the ocean water had rose a lot, but nothing big enough for the shark to escape into the ocean and have freedom.
As he walked home, all he could think about was the shark and of course Robin vanishing.
