Chapter 48
(The next morning...)
I woke up to find a cat snoozing on top of me.
I groaned as the fog of exhaustion descended onto me. "Luna..."
"Mmm...?" She replied dreamily.
"Please...get off."
"I'm so comfy though..."
I sighed, "I make a good pillow, don't I?"
"Mmm...you really do," She murmured, snuggling up against me.
Whelp, I was stuck, so I fell asleep again. About an hour later, I woke up to find that Luna had rolled off of me. I gently kissed her on the forehead before getting out of the tent. I had to start cooking breakfast before I was overwhelmed by grouchy, hangry people. (Primarily Analise.)
It's nice being the cook: more often than not, you don't have to worry about someone trying to kill you because they're so hungry. Well, if I mess up breakfast, I'll definitely have a problem.
I shrugged and added kindling to the cooking fire to keep it from dying on me. When I was sure my cooking fire wasn't going to fizzle out on me, I got busy cutting up veggies and creating a nice hearty broth for a simple stew. In a pinch, you can't go wrong with a stew. After veggies were taken care of, I raided the small building near the cooking area to find that it appeared to be a...refrigerated pantry? When I was done oogling over the intricate ice magic runes that were casted in the small building, I selected three slaughtered -and cleaned- chickens to add to my stew.
The smells of my creations coaxed everyone out of their slumber. As stated previously, the eating area was a campfire surrounded by a bunch of wooden tables and benches, so it was fairly easy to get to the cooking pot and make yourself a bowl of food.
The people who had been target practice for Ana the other night sat at a table that was away from the blood elf. She rolled her eyes and chuckled, but didn't try anything crazy.
After I finished cooking, I made Luna a bowl of food and handed it to her. She was still in a simple nightgown made of black fabric that she had bought in Helios a few weeks ago. (She wears it mostly because she said she doesn't want to be 'too much of a tease'. Of course, she told me this with a wink.)
She yawned and gratefully accepted the bowl I handed her, "Thank you Helix."
"Of course," I replied as I made myself a bowl. I then followed her over to a table where some of our teammates were sitting.
Soren made himself a bowl and sighed happily, "Ah, food-and good food at that."
Sasha snorted, "Good food indeed. Remember that stew you ruined a week ago?"
He sighed, "That was an accident."
"Like all of the other stews you've ruined?" She prompted, a joyous grin on her face.
Soren had sat down beside his wife after he got his food, and he laid his head on the table in defeat, "I'm sorry I suck at cooking," He grumbled.
Sasha laughed, "I'm just pulling your leg, love. Don't take it to heart."
He sighed. Glancing my way, he shook his head, "This woman's going to be the death of me."
I heard Luna purring to herself as she ate breakfast, and I couldn't help but smile. "Aye, but you can't help but love them, whether they be acting normal or going absolutely bonkers. One thing's for certain: they make every day interesting."
Soren chuckled, "You do have a point, Hel."
Simon was offered a bowl of stew, and he took it hesitantly.
"I have not tried to eat any form of food in...well, in a long time."
Luna looked at him with a spark of curiosity in her eyes, "Have you ever felt hungry before?"
Simon shook his head, "Not really, but it's worth a try."
He took off his head and dumped the bowl of stew into his...body?
Everyone reacted in surprise, but Simon seemed to be genuinely enjoying my cooking.
"Hmm...nice choice of spices, Helix," He mused, placing his head back onto his shoulders, "That really was good."
Nova seemed particularly perplexed, "H-How? It should be impossible for a spectral being to ingest any form of food. How in the hell..."
Simon shrugged his metal shoulders, "I really do not know, but that was very tasty. Thank you Helix."
I was still confused as hell as I replied: "No problem Simon. I'm glad you enjoyed it."
The morning was slightly less strange as everyone woke up.
I got dressed in my armor and strapped my blade onto my belt. After I slung my shield onto my back, Stanford presented me with a heavy cloak he had created.
"Considering you're the second in command of the Knights Templar, I made this cloak for you."
"It's a cape," I pointed out.
"It's a cloak," Stanford snapped back.
"Nope, it's a cape,"
"It's a cloak, motherfucker!" Stanford exclaimed.
I chuckled and conceded: "Fine, I'll wear it."
The 'cloak' was made of a heavy black fabric that seemed to shimmer in the early morning sunlight. The emblem of a silver snarling wolf dominated the center of the cloak. The cloak fell to the ground when I took off my shield and clasped it around my neck. Huh, it trailed a little bit behind me when I finally got the damn thing on. To be honest, it was quite soft. I was able to wear it like a cloak, but it was still a cape in my eyes.
Luna walked over to me and eyeballed my...cloak. She was wearing the set of battlemage armor I had purchased for her back in Helios. Her white robes appeared to glow in the low light of the morning, and the pieces of armor that adorned her forearms, lower legs, and shoulders glittered as if they were comprised of countless stars.
"How do I look?" She asked, flipping a hood over her face. I chuckled when I saw her ears poke out the top of her hood.
I grinned, "You look awesome."
She smiled, "Thanks Helix. I take it Stanford gave you that cape?"
"It's. A. Motherfucking. Cloak!" He shouted.
We both laughed at my boss' pain. (As most people do.)
"Helix, Luna," Soren called, "You two ready to go? We're about to leave for Vastiin. Oh, and Helix," He continued, "Some of my colleagues may ask you a question or two on our way to the city, so if you hear a voice in your head, don't panic."
I laughed, "I'm used to it. At any rate, thanks for the head's up."
Looking at Luna, I motioned for her to follow. Stanford fell in line with the two of us, then the rest of my team joined us.
Soren looked at his team, "Sorry guys, but I'm only taking Helix's group with me. I'll be back in a few hours. Sasha, you're in charge until I get back. If anything goes wrong, let me know."
She grinned, "Of course, dear."
He nodded and looked at my team, "Let's get moving then."
We left the fort and traveled along the same path we took yesterday. Of course, we were met with resistance. Hilariously enough, these bastards died faster due to the fact that my team were more than happy to get down and dirty with our foes.
Nova held her hand cannon up to her face and blew at a stream of light purple smoke after she blasted a demon apart.
"Oh yeah, baby," She purred, "That's how you murderlate a demon."
"Murderlate?" Soren echoed, "Is that even a word?"
I chuckled, "Don't question her logic, Soren. Nova has the tendency to create new words on a whim."
He shrugged, "Alrighty then...I'll just take your word and not question her logic..."
Thirty minutes later, we walked into Vastiin. I told my people that they can explore, but on one condition.
"You guys have to be in groups of two while we're here. Stanford, Luna and I have business to attend to in Vastiin, so we'll see you guys soon."
Nova walked off with Analise, and Dorrian went with Ben.
Soren began to lead us toward a large tower that loomed above the other buildings in the city when Stanford stopped midstep. His eyes were locked onto a figure, and his face was painted with a plethora with emotions.
"Evelyn," He croaked.
Following his gaze, I caught sight of a woman talking to a street merchant at a stall in the marketplace. From what I could see, Evelyn's hair was a pale hue of purple.
He looked at me, and I saw the conflict in my boss's eyes.
I smiled, "Go on Stanford."
"Hel," He began hesitantly, only for me to hold my hand up for 'hush yer facehole.'
"You've been looking for this woman for god knows how long," I began, "She saved your life, so you deserve to go talk to her. The inquisitors can wait for you. They'll understand."
Stanford nodded, silent gratitude apparent on his face.
"Okay, thank you so much Helix," he breathed. After he took a deep breath, Stanford started walking toward her. He called her name, and she turned around to look at him.
I nudged Soren, "Let's give those two some privacy."
He nodded, and continued to walk down the sandstone road that led toward the large, imposing tower. When we reached the building, Soren opened a large door and allowed me and Luna to walk into a capacious room that quickly turned out to be a sprawling library. Sitting at a desk before the front door was an elderly man. He was in the middle of reading a book when we entered the building.
"Oh, hello Soren," He said in greeting without looking up from his book.
He grinned, "Hello Theo. Are the others here?"
"Aye, they're waiting for you upstairs," He looked up from his book and frowned, "Weren't there supposed to be three people with you?"
"Stanford will be here soon," I replied, "He had to take care of something real quick."
"Alright," Theo began, returning his attention to his book: "You may pass."
