The Valuables
"I need you guys' help," Harry declared.
Annie noticed that her brother's hair looked damp, as though he'd just gotten out of the shower.
"I just found out what the Second Task is! Meet me up in the library!"
And with that, Harry took off. Ron stared after his friend, confused.
"Since when has Harry been obsessed with going to the library?"
Annie shrugged in return. "Who knows. Maybe he needs to find something really important."
Nonetheless, they met up with her brother in the library. He was in the herbology section, his head resting against the middle of the book he must have gotten tired of reading. Annie frowned and noticed that he clutched at the golden egg he was supposed to be figuring out.
"Care to tell us what's going on? Harry, you almost never go into the library unless it's important. This must be important, so maybe, you can explain to us what you're doing with your head lying on a book?"
"Well, if you're really interested in knowing, I just figured out the clue for the Second Task."
Annie stared at her brother expectantly. "And?"
He told them to poem. Annie snorted.
"The Black Lake. That one is a bit obvious."
"An hour long you'll have to look?"
"Again, a bit obvious. Although, it's potentially problematic."
Harry raised his head to look up at his sister in amazement. "Potentially problematic? Since when was the last time you swam while holding your breath underwater for an hour, Annie?"
Annie sighed and shoved the egg into Ron's arms, preventing him from falling asleep. She approached her brother, kneeling down in front of him. She took her brother's hand in hers, giving him a determined look.
"Listen, Harry. We — We can do this. The five of us can figure it out."
"Pardon me. I hate to break up this cozy little gathering," said the voice of Professor Moody. Annie stood up to show her respect towards Professor Moody. "But Professor McGonagall would like to see you in her office." Harry, Ron, and Dante began to rise to his feet but Professor Moody told him off. "Not you, Mr. Potter, Mr. Knightley. Only Miss Potter and Miss Granger."
Annie gave him a weird look. "But, sir! The second task is only hours away, and —"
"Exactly. Which is why Mr. Potter should be able to figure this out with a good night's sleep. Go. NOW!"
With his forceful words, Annie sighed. She put a reassuring hand on her brother's shoulder before leaving. As she and Hermione walked over towards Professor McGonagall's office, Annie felt disturbed.
"Why would Professor McGonagall call for us? Is she going to call us off for helping Harry?"
"If that was the case, she would have had Ron and Dante come with us as well."
An even more unsettling thought came to her, and a chill settled in her stomach. She turned to Hermione and stopped walking. Hermione followed suit.
"Hermione, you don't think we are the valuables that the Champions are supposed to be looking for, are we?"
Hermione shrugged. "It's a possibility. I mean, it would make sense for you, as you're your brother's sister. And me. . . .? Who would I be valuable to?"
"Viktor Krum? He seems to treat you like a princess when you're around."
Hermione scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Don't be ridiculous, Annie. I don't think of him that way And, besides! It'll be difficult with a long-distance relationship next year."
They finally made it to Professor McGonagall's office. She heard a faint 'come in' as she knocked on the door. When she opened the door, Annie was surprised when Cho Chang and Fleur Delacour's little sister joined them.
"You needed to see us, Professor?" Annie asked nervously as she sat down in a chair.
"Yes. You've heard of the clues, I assume."
"Harry just now told me and Hermione," Annie answered.
"And you know that their valuables are going to be missing, don't you?"
A sick feeling settled into Annie's feeling and her face went pale.
She knew it.
"We're the valuables, aren't we?"
Professor McGonagall nodded forlornly.
"I'm afraid you are."
"Who do we belong to?"
"Miss Potter, I think your answer is obvious. Your brother has to collect you. Miss Granger, you're Mr. Krum's valuable person. Miss Chang is Mr. Diggory's. And Miss Delacour is Fleur's."
Annie blinked, confused. "Okay? But I have one question, Professor. How are we going to be breathing underwater? The clue clearly states that "we cannot sing above the ground" means the Black Lake. And we'll be underwater the entire time until the Champions come and collect us."
"Professor Dumbledore has already sorted that out," Professor McGonagall reassured them. "He's recently created a spell that'll allow you to be put in a deep sleep, and will be able to breathe underwater. You won't remember what happened until your Champions have saved you. They'll have one hour deal to come and collect you."
"And if not?" Annie asked nervously.
Professor McGonagall gave her a saddened look. "Then you won't come back."
Annie's face went, if possible, even paler than before. Before she could speak, Professor McGonagall raised her wand. The last thing she saw was Professor McGonagall's apologetic expression.

When Annie's head popped out of the water, she opened her eyes for the first time, gasping for proper breath. She saw Fleur's little sister and immediately helped to guide her to the stairs. Fleur immediately spoke in rapid French, helping her sister the rest of the way up.
When she didn't see her brother, she began to feel anxious. Then, quite suddenly —
He shot out of the water and landed on the podium. At once, he coughed up water. Seamus grabbed a towel, demanding Dean to grab him another one.
"Harry!" Annie exclaimed, hurrying over. She took off her extra heavy blanket, giving it to her brother. "Thank goodness, you're alright!" She kissed the top of her brother's head, causing him to groan. "Personally, I think that you behaved admirably."
"I finished last, Annie," Harry protested through chattering teeth. Sera grabbed his head again and gave him another kiss. "Next to last. I've been told that Fleur never got past the Grindylows."
"You saved her, even though she wasn't yours to save — my little sister! Thank you!" Fleur squealed, clearly grateful for Harry's help. She kissed him on both cheeks before turning to Annie.
"And you — you helped!"
Annie shrugged, unfazed. "Well, maybe a little. But don't worry about it —"
She was interrupted by Fleur kissing her on the cheeks as well before escorting her little sister away. Professor Dumbledore waved for silence before finally using his wand.
"SONORUS! The winner is Mr. Diggory! Who used the unique command of the Bubble-head charm. However, some of us thought that Mr. Potter should have been in first place for he saved, not only his beloved sister, but the others as well. We've agreed to award him . . . . second place." Everyone cheered. Annie grabbed her brother by the neck, a little less roughly than before, thrilled that they gave him extra credit. "For outstanding moral fiber!"
Annie was relieved when they got back on dry land. Fred and George were talking and laughing loudly.
"Congrats, mate," said Fred.
"Yeah, Moral Fiber," George added teasingly.
"Excellent work, Mr. Potter," said Mr. Crouch, who stopped the twins from walking any further.
"Thank you."
"Mind if I have a word? Don't worry, Miss potter. It'll be quick."
Annie nodded before joining Ron, Hermione, and Dante.
"We'll see you at Hagrid's, Harry!" Ron called.
As promised, Harry met up with them at Hagrid's before taking a walk in the woods. Hagrid struck up a conversation.
"Now, I remember when I first met the lot of ya . . . . biggest bunch of misfits I ever laid eyes on, probably worse than your twin brothers, Ronald."
Ron laughed. "Yeah, but we're still a bunch of misfits."
"Maybe," Hagrid agreed. "But we've still got each other. And Harry, of course. Who's soon to be the youngest Tri-Wizard Champion there's ever been! Hurray!"
And with that, they began to bellow the Hogwart's theme at the top of their lungs until they were interrupted by Harry once again. His face looked pale, and his expression troubled. Annie gave him a look of concern.
"Harry? What is it?"
"It's Mr. Crouch," he answered, his lips seemingly numb, as he was almost mumbling. "He's dead. I found him."
"Mr. Crouch? Dead?" Hagrid replied. He, too, looked a bit pale. "That can't be good. Can you show us where he is?"
"Yeah, not too far away from us."
He led his friends and his sister over towards the dead body of Mr. Crouch. And Annie knew that they had to warn Professor Dumbledore.
