04 | The Great White Shark
"I-uh-I saw some weirdly shaped cells along with normal shark cells..." I said after a moment of hesitation.
Dr. Costa, Professor Rain, and Antonio looked impressed by my observation.
"He's good," Dr. Costa said to Professor Rain who chuckled while nodding his head.
I frowned.
I hate it when people talk about me as if I am not standing right in front of their freaking faces.
"Woahh! I didn't see anything like that!" One of my classmates said before coming forward and looking at the specimen again. Kengi gave me a wink before he turned toward the professor.
We are the only two ones who take marine biology the most seriously.
"We are going for a dive day after tomorrow to observe the sha- wait do you know what shark this is?" Dr. Costa asked looking at me now.
I nodded my head and gave a side glance at Kengi who also nodded his head.
"The Great White Shark!" The both of us said together.
"I just confirmed it."
"I guessed it."
Kengi and I said together before laughing. "You both are very good," Antonio said, giving us a smile.
Kengi smiled back and I gave a nervous one back.
I feel uncomfortable around Antonio and I do not know why.
"Alright! We would like Mr. Akabane and Mr. Kim to come to Oceania the day after tomorrow-"
"But the day after tomorrow is...is Sunday!" I complained.
I love marine biology, yes, but not more than my sleep.
No, no, no! This is completely unacceptable!
"Oh...do you have anything planned that day Mr. Kim?"
"Yes! And it's very important! So can you shift it to tomorrow?!" I answered immediately. Kengi laughed quietly, his shoulders shaking, and I glared at him.
Once, I told the same thing to Kengi. He wanted to do a group study back then. I had accidentally left my notebook back at the university the day before and Kengi came to return it. When he arrived at my place, my mother told her that I was upstairs and he was quite shocked because I had told him that I will be busy till 2 pm. When he saw me sleeping peacefully on my bed, he got angry at first but then understood why I said that. When I woke up at 2 pm and saw him sitting on my desk, I thought I was screwed but then he laughed and said that he understood why I said it was important.
I did not specifically lie and I still am not lying. I need sleep to maintain my ethereal beauty.
A man like me gotta stay handsome, you know.
"Okay, then tomorrow it is..." Dr. Costa said, frowning slightly. A smile broke on my face and Kengi and I high-fived. "Be here at sharp 7 am and wait in the parking lot." We both nodded our heads before all of us were ushered from the room and into the hallway.
We then continued our tour.
"Thank you for showing us around!" All of us said together as we were about to get on the bus.
"You're welcome." Antonio chuckled. One by one we got into the bus and sat in our previous seats. Antonio waved at us and all of us waved back.
I awkwardly waved back. Our eyes made contact and he gave me a little smirk that sent shivers down my spine.
I need to have a talk with Miguel.
The same day, 7 pm ~
"Hey, Mig what's up?" I said as soon as Miguel picked up his call.
"Uh...the sky?"
I rolled my eyes.
"Stop being a smart-ass."
I heard laughter from the other side.
"So...why did you call?"
"I'm going for a dive tomorrow at 7 am so we won't be able to meet I guess...by the way, I wanted to ask you about your dad...you know I never wanted to pry right? So..."
Silence followed after that for a few minutes, Miguel then cleared his throat.
"That's great! Don't die out there please!"
I chuckled.
"Your cha-"
"Yes yes, I know...can't it wait till tomorrow?"
"Nope," I replied sitting on my bed now.
I heard him sigh.
"Fine! My parents were 'in love' and happily married for 15 years before they got a divorce. I was too young to understand why they got one but now I know. My father is gay and he fell in love with his secretary when they first met in China."
"Name?"
"Antonio Luis....."
"So-"
"Ugh go to sleep! We will talk when you get back!"
"Okay..."
And we hung up.
I stared at the ceiling as I thought about Miguel's father.
No wonder I was feeling so uncomfortable with his stares, he was giving me sexual looks!
I shuddered at my own thoughts.
Let's... let's not worry about it...I need sleep for tomorrow.
Next day, 7 am ~
"I can't believe you came to send me off," I said as I looked at Miguel who looked like he was going to fall asleep anytime now. "You are going to see sharks and I don't know if you will survive or not so in case you don't this is the last time we see each ot-"
"Okay okay, I understand jeez," I said rolling my eyes at his dramatic self.
"Please Jin I'm serious!" Miguel looked at me with worried eyes and I sighed.
"I'll be fine you idiot...I have my seniors with me so I'll be alive." I chuckled and Miguel frowned.
"Mr. Kim!" I heard our professor shout from beside his car.
Both of us walked towards his car. "Mr. Kim hurry up! We are late!" Professor Rain grumbled as he slide into his car. I hugged Miguel one last time before sliding in too. I waved at him as Professor Rain drove off our campus grounds.
"You're late Rain!" That was the first thing I heard when he got off the car. We have directly driven to the beach and now we are standing in front of Oceania's yacht. "Sorry sorry! Too much traffic!" Professor Rain said, flicking his wrist and looking at the time.
7:15 am
That's what my wristwatch was flashing.
Dr. Costa ushered us in and in no time we were off the beach and going deeper into the ocean. I walked downstairs and opened a random door to find Kengi admiring himself in front of the mirror.
"Oh, you're here! I thought you would not make it..." I rolled my eyes at his sentence and he chuckled.
"I would not miss it for anything-"
"Except for sleep."
"Except for sleep," I agreed.
I threw my bag on my new bed and rushed upstairs and onto the deck. It was still morning and the sun was still on the horizon. I looked at the scenery mesmerized by its beauty.
"Wow, what a beauty...." I heard someone say from behind me.
