Cards Are a Good Distraction from... Everything
Cards Are a Good Distraction from... Everything
They were playing cards.
They were playing cards whilst their ship (aka: the Batship, cause Dickie was in charge of naming it and he has absolutely no originality.) hurled through space.
What else would they be doing? This is the tried and true method of disaster: play cards and ignore all of your problems.
A personal favorite of his.
Jason smirked as he switched a card in his hand for the one just passed to him by Tim. He glanced around, making sure nobody was watching as he slowly reached out to silently grab a spoon.
Tim jolted from beside him and he sighed inwardly. So much for not being seen, he thinks, as Tim also grabs a spoon, causing Cass to quickly grab one too. Damn that kid's observational skills.
Somehow, the other five didn't see it. They just kept passing cards. Jason made eye contact with Tim and they both smirked evilly, going back to passing the cards around the table, wanting to see how long it took the others to notice the missing spoons.
Alfred grabbed a spoon. This time, nobody noticed, not even the three that had already won.
"Wait a damn minute." Duke gasped, gaining the attention of both Dick and Damian, exactly 7 minutes after Jason won. Yes, he was counting. No, he doesn't regret it. It's for science. Duke lurched forward loudly, yanking one of the spoons away from the pile, almost dropping it twice. Dick yelped in outrage as both he and Damian jumped for the last two spoons.
Bruce was still passing cards.
"Oh, my God." Jason said, watching in a mixture of confusion and amusement as Bruce ignored everything happening around him. Dick snickered, handing Bruce an entire pile of cards, who took them without question. "He's totally oblivious."
Bruce let out a sudden victorious shout, dropping 4 cards face down on the table, revealing a matching row of 8's. He reached out for the middle of the table, where the spoons used to be, only to pause as a tense silence filled the room.
"Not again." He said, voice full of dread.
In unison, all of his children burst into manic laughter. Even Alfred let out a chuckle, making Bruce's eye twitch.
"I hate this game," he announced, crossing his arms with an exaggerated pout, lips twitching at the ends, trying to hold back a laugh as well. It's hard to stay serious when your entire family's infectious laughter is surrounding you.
"Don't worry, father," Damian said, "I'm sure it won't be the last time." His words just made everyone laugh harder.
That was about the time that everything went from bad to worse.
...
She was in big trouble. Enormous. Massive. Tremendous. Colossal. Monumental. Brobdingnagian trouble.
She never should have become a stowaway on this ship. Life would've been so much easier if she'd decided to stay on a dying planet. At least then she wouldn't be in as deep shit as she is now.
Stephanie regrets every decision she's ever made before in her life.
And that's quite a lot of decisions, as she's been alive for 21 years.
At least she can drink, though. She could be making terrible decisions and still be a minor. That would be awful.
Her latest horrid decision, you ask? Other than committing a crime? Well.
Where does she even begin...
She was dedicated to following this through, at this point.
Stephanie had already made it onto the ship. It had taken for-freaking-ever to get past all those damn guards.
But
Nothing can ever go right, can it? Not in her experience, at least.
She'd snuck onto the wrong wing.
Instead of going to the single passenger area, where it was a first come first serve type deal, she'd gone to the family area.
Where it would be significantly more obvious that she was an outsider.
A stowaway.
This was the start of her issues.
The second issue she came across was almost getting caught.
There were two people around her age walking down the corridor. A boy and a girl who looked nothing alike but acted like siblings. She had quickly ducked into the ship she was closest to.
She's still not sure whether or not they saw her. She sure does hope not.
Which brings her to now, 6 hours later, stuck in a ship with a giant (heavy emphasis on giant) family she didn't know and hurtling through space, the alarms still ringing in her ears. Also her legs were cramping from being in the same position for so long. She's pretty sure her foot was asleep too. Note to self: never become a spy. She'd suck at it.
She's gotten off topic. Whoops.
Okay, so, to summarize the circumstances: people in the hall, hiding, now stuck in a ship with a family of 8 (their name had something to do with fire?), alarms, cramping legs.
It has been a long, long day.
The family she'd intruded on were currently strapped to the table, silent. It looked like torture. The eldest son (15 or something) was making funny faces at the youngest two girls, who were giggling. The father was staring angrily into space (ha), fists straining against the seat and jaw clenched. The mother was telling a story to the rest of the children, voice soft, trying to hide her fear. It was working on her family, but Stephanie could hear the tremor in her voice. She'd grown up knowing how to tell what someone was feeling despite the front they put up, afterall.
The ship lurched, and Stephanie gasped, scrambling to find something to hold on to.
And just in time, too.
The ship was crashing into a planet.
Stephanie, despite doing her hardest, could not stop herself from flying into the wall. She blacked out, completely missing the fact that the ship had split into two.
...
Somewhere, deep in space, someone was watching all the ships go down, a sinister look on their face.
It's finally time to get payback.
Humanity would pay. And so would all of those fucking scientists.
.............................
Okay. So. This is the first chapter. It is also the only chapter I have written.
Damian is around 15 in this fic, because... I don't really have a reason I just wanted to.
Um. This fic is probably going to be very unscientific. I almost failed that class, y'all, so I think its pretty understandable. If anyone who knows a lot about space science and other such things, message me on Tumblr? I'd really appreciate the help. I hate being inaccurate with these types of things. For now, though, I'll just hope and pray that google is actually accurate for once.
This fanfiction is based off the show Lost in Space. It will probably be nothing like it. I haven't decided yet.
I hope this lives up to everyone's expectations but I make no promises.
Also I'm sorry that the summary is so awful but I had no idea what to write. I'll fix it later, when I come up with something.
