244. Julianne's Parents

Tiffany Chang was a girl of many things. And on that list of things was details.

She knew not to let them pass her by.

And one of those was Maximillian Hunter.

The fact of the matter being that she knew this one detail about him.

That being... that she knew very little about him at all.

Sure, she'd learnt a lot about him this night. But even still, she knew there was a lot she didn't know.

After all, seeing how guilty he then and there looked...

Ken was the next to come to the "re-realisation" of the situation, his eyes turning to a still frowning, but then slightly disgusted looking Max.

And then Luke, perhaps in his boredom, also came to look back at Max.

His eyes were stuck on his mother's...

Never fading away from them even as she spoke to Rose about her parents.

Julianne: ... my mother and father always used to make jokes about how weird outer space was.

Rose: Really?

Julianne: Mmm, hmmm.

And then she let off a heart-felt sigh.

Julianne: And my mother always used to talk about how my dad always helped her relax and calm down.

Rose: (gasp) He did?

This is what many of the male gender would refer to as "a girly conversation" and those of the female, "girl talk"

Julianne: Mmmmm, hmmm...

To those of the female gender, fantasising about one's future potential partner was a simple commonality. Just as common would be having conversations about it.

Talking about what he's like or will be like or should be like.

All those pieces are a simple thing for all those born female. Almost as though second nature.

After all, how will he be like, is a very good question.

Needless to say, Luke, Ken, and Max were completely disinterested.

But that didn't stop Tiffany from looking onto Max. The same being the fact about Ken and then later Luke.

Why was Max so upset before?

It wasn't like they'd expected something sinister.

But rather... why?

And it was the why that made them so cautious about the whole thing.

Why would Max be so concerned about being a half breed?

And so they theorised, silently, of course, wondering to themselves, what could be the big deal?

Tiffany: (thinking: Am I missing something?)

Ken: (thinking: So... he's hiding something else?)

Luke: (thinking: What's the matter with him now?)

But Julianne and Rose continued to chit chat almost absent-mindedly.

Rose: Really?

Julianne: (chuckling) Uh huh. I couldn't believe it. My dad had to make three copies just to keep up with all the housework.

Rose: Oh my gosh.

Julianne: And my mom was soooo worried he'd mess it up.

Rose: (gasp) Did he make it?

Julianne: He did it alright....

And then, as though a pause for dramatic effect...

Julianne: He messed it up big time.

Rose: Oh dear.

But Julianne did not seem sad. In fact, she was laughing right after she said that, much to Rose's shock.

Rose: Hmmm?

Julianne: (sighs) It was one of the weirdest days we had as a family. And my mom was furious.

Rose: Oh dear!

And then, the tired mother's eyes simmered...

Julianne: But then.... y'know..... she just... let it go.

Rose: (gasp) She did?

Julianne: That she did.

Rose: Really?

Julianne: Yes, she told me she....

And she smiled a bit more even then.

Julianne: .... just couldn't stay mad for some reason.

Rose: (girly squeal) Oh my goooooooosh!

A strange family she had and a strange family she knew she had.

But, all in all, she was proud of her family.

Her strange inter-species family.

She was proud to be a Hunter.

And of Rose, she was happy the girl was so happy to hear her.

But as she mused to herself about all this, her parents, her family and Rose...

She raised her head, suddenly remembering that the rest of the team was still there.

Julianne: Oh, sorry, I....

And at that point, she realised something that almost made her heart stop.

To be completely fair, the tail end of her story was interesting enough that Tiffany, Ken, and Luke had paid at least some attention to it.

However, the look of contemplation directed towards her downtrodden looking son had not gone unnoticed by the mother.

She couldn't believe it.

She'd gotten completely sidetracked.

Julianne: Oh.....

It was at that point that her eyes and those of her son's met.

Some claim it to be a myth.

Others claim it to be true.

Others claim it to be law.

Others say it is a coincidence.

But none can claim it to be wholly untrue.

Even the biggest skeptic would have to admit this.

A mother knows, and a mother knows.

To skeptics, a mother's bond with a child is simply a reflection of their biological instincts combined with the immense amount of time that they spend together.

To those who believe in the spiritual, it is a bond between the souls of the mother and child that results in their innate relationship.

Said people believe the bond is so strong that a mother can feel her child's pain over a long distance.

Now, as for which side is correct, that is all up in the air.

However, it is a simple fact of the matter... that mothers know their kids insanely well.

Well enough to have a full understanding or even conversation with their children just by looking into their eyes.

And this fact remained true for Julianne Hunter and her one and only son, Maximillian Hunter.

To be completely honest with herself, her and Max were two very different people.

Her and Max had their differences. She knew that.

Differences enough that had they not been related, perhaps they would live entirely different walks of life.

Perhaps they wouldn't even get along.

Who knew?

But somehow, perhaps they would get along.

As Julianne Hunter knew well, a good part of who she was... was because of her son Max.

He'd changed her just as she'd changed him.

And of that, she was eternally grateful.

Grateful to who?

Perhaps to life itself.

And as for her son...

.. the one on the Earth whom she loved the most....

... she knew exactly what those eyes were saying.

It was nothing more and nothing less... than a cry for help.

And any normal mother, ... would answer that call without any hesitation.
