Chapter 10: Legacy Of Terror
Master Unduli and Skywalker had won a massive victory in destroying a huge droid factory thanks to the help of their Padawans.
While Grim would have liked to have been there, she had stayed with Master Kenobi and Mundi to heal. Letting her injured arm rest, but it healed quicker than she had expected.
Now it was time for Luminara, Obi-Wan, and Grim to clean up everything, and hopefully capture Poggle the Lesser.
Obi-Wan and Grim met with Luminara. "A hard won victory," Obi-Wan said.
"Indeed, and a costly one," agreed Luminara. "We suffer a great many losses in these battles. Too many."
Grim didn't say anything, but she silently agreed. It was the point of this pointless war. To have such heavy casualties, and yet she knew that this was hardly the beginning.
As the war drew on the battles would only become more costly and they would suffer many more losses.
Until the end, where they would lose.
Except she would change that, she had to change that.
"The battles do seem to be coming with growing frequency," said Obi-Wan.
"No sign of Poggle, then?" Luminara asked.
"Nothing," said Grim.
"We have clone squadrons all over the area, but no hits yet," Obi-Wan added.
"I'll go out and see if I can't find any clues as to where he went," offered Luminara as she walked over towards a speederbike.
"I'm sure the clones can handle-" Obi-Wan protested.
"Poggle has too much information about the Separatists to let him get away," argued Luminara.
"Very well Master Unduli," Obi-Wan said.
"Just be sure to leave a bit of strategic planning for me when I come back, Master Kenobi. "I'd hate to feel left out."
Grim was about to say something but Luminara was already gone. She frowned and sighed.
The Jedi Master and his Padawan headed back to the ship to discuss plans. There they saw Ki-Adi studying the star chart. "What's this?" Obi-Wan asked. "I wasn't expecting to find you up and about."
"After enough time in a bacta tank, one longs for the mundane comfort of star charts," Ki-Adi replied.
"It looks like it did you some good," Obi-Wan replied. "Your wound looks almost healed."
"I wish I could say the same for most of my men," said Ki-Adi.
"Well, let's hope we don't have to take Geonosis a third time," said Obi-Wan. They turned around as a holomap was projected. Obi-Wan explained; "Poggle's forces seem to have come from the Northern Hemisphere."
"And where was Master Unduli's last contact made from?" Ki-Adi asked.
"This region farther to the west but there's nothing out there according to our latest intel," explained Obi-Wan pointing at the map.
Grim studied the map and considered the information she already had, knowing she could bring it up to the Jedi Masters. However before she could, Luminara contacted them, having spotted something. "It appears to be a munitions container of some kind," she told them.
"It could just be debris," Ki-Adi pointed out.
"I don't think so. There was no battle in this area," replied Luminara.
"It looks like Poggle was on a direct course," pointed out the trooper with Luminara. "Eleven mark seventy-two, that way," he said.
"Headed directly to Progate Temple," said Luminara.
"That makes no sense," said Ki-Adi.. "Nothing in the temple could have survived the munitions we used in the first wave of our attack. Why would he risk exposure to go there?"
"I'm not yet sure. Perhaps he doesn't realize the extent to which we cleared that area," Luminara replied.
Anakin walked over. "Master Luminara, I'm tracking a sandstorm that's heading your way," he informed her.
"No matter. Poggle is out in the open, and I intend to grab him before he can get offworld," said Luminara.
"I advise against it," Ki-Adi told her. "You might get lost in the storm."
"Then we'd have to find both you and Poggle," added Obi-Wan.
"I feel it is a risk worth taking," Luminara replied.
"As you wish," Ki-Adi said.
With that the call ended. Grim sighed, she knew she should have said something. There was no reason for her to not say anything.
She didn't know why she was like this, it wasn't like she was afraid of anything when it came to this piece at least.
Grim went to find someplace quiet to work on her plans for stopping Sidious and Order 66. She had been in Star Wars for a year now and yet she had very little progress in interfering with what she had promised to change.
She hoped to somehow someday get evidence that the Chancellor was in fact a Sith Lord. The problem was that she had no idea how to acquire evidence of this fact. Even so it hadn't stopped her in the past.
Sometimes she got frustrated that she didn't get many chances to actually work on executing her plans. Either having to be offworld because of the war or having to focus on her lessons and becoming a Jedi.
Grim would sometimes wonder what her life would be like if she had somebody else for a Master. Not that she didn't dislike having Obi-Wan as her Master, but it oftentimes meant she was dragged through the main plot. Which dragged her away from actually executing her plans.
When the storm had passed, Obi-Wan found Grim. "The storm has let up, we need to go out and search for Luminara. She seemed to have gotten in some trouble during her last call," he explained to his Padawan.
Eventually the gunship carrying Obi-Wan,Anakin, Grim, and several clone troopers landed just outside the Progate Temple. As they walked inside the ruined temple Obi-Wan said; "stay alert everyone."
"Spread out and look around, men," said Anakin.
A moment later Cody called out; "General." Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Grim rushed over to him. "Buzz is dead," he informed the three Jedi.
"Any sign of Luminara?" Anakin asked.
"No, sir," Cody replied.
Grim noticed that the opening to the catacombs was open, slightly. "There was a struggle," she said.
Obi-Wan went over, "that's not a good sign," he said. He picked up the lightsaber and showed it to Anakin, "Luminara's lightsaber."
"Poggle didn't do this," said Anakin. He looked up to see a carving of a geonosian. "But maybe that did."
"That is one ugly bug," one clone commented.
"I've never seen one that looks like that before," Anakin said.
"I don't believe anyone has," said Obi-Wan. "It could be the Geonosian queen."
"The bugs have a queen?" asked Anakin.
"Evidently," said Grim, already entering the tunnel. Igniting her lightsaber for light.
"Come on then," Obi-Wan told the others as he followed Grim. Anakin and Obi-Wan walking beside her with their lightsabers also ignited for light.
They walked through the dark claustrophobic catacombs. The three Jedi in the lead, using their lightsabers for light sources. Grim found the environment uncomfortable but she didn't say anything.
"This leads to a dead end," said Cody. He crouched over by the entrance to another tunnel. "This one goes down the furthest." Obi-Wan crouched down by Cody as the commander told him; "sir, I'd say that's our best bet."
"I'll go first," said Obi-Wan. He crouched through the tunnel, Grim following, then Anakin, and finally the clones. They all stood up once the ceiling got higher and the group went deeper into the tunnels.
As they continued on, Obi-Wan's holocom began to beep. He unclipped it from his belt and answered. Luminara's hologram appeared. "If you're following me, you must leave this place. Just get out. I repeat, fall ba-" she was cut off by being grabbed by one of the Geonosians.
"She must be close by, come on!" Obi-Wan told them. Everyone began to run following Obi-Wan. They stopped when several geonosian zombies blocked their path. "I don't like the look of this," said Obi-Wan.
There was another sound from behind them and they turned to notice that there were more coming from behind.
Obi-Wan and Grim began to slice down the bugs coming from in front while Anakin took down the ones from behind.
The clones shot down the bugs.
Grim did her best to ignore how disgusting things were, and tried not to think about how the show had not accurately depicted how gross and creepy it was.
"Back everyone back!" Obi-Wan ordered. "Take out the tunnel supports! It's the only way!" he added. Blasterfire collapsed the tunnel as the group slid down another tunnel.
"What were those things?" Anakin asked. "We couldn't kill them."
"Well you can't kill zombies," said Grim casually.
"Zombies?" asked Anakin, skeptically.
"I have heard stories of a geonosian hive mind so powerful, so strong, that it can maintain its connection with its warriors even after they have died," said Obi-Wan. "So as Grim put it, yes zombies."
"That can't be true, that's impossible," Anakin insisted.
Grim resisted the urge to make a comment, or reference the future. Not that it would ever happen if she stopped things. "Well, even so, that's what those things were."
"Call for reinforcements,' Obi-Wan told Anakin.
Anakin tried but his commlink only beeped. "There's no signal."
"We must be too deep underground then," said Grim.
Obi-Wan turned to two of the men. "You two, head back to the surface and contact General Mundi. Tell him we need reinforcements."
"Yes, sir," they replied.
Moments later they heard screaming and ran back. The two clones were dead. "Obviously these things are more powerful than we first thought," said Anakin. "I'm going back to the surface myself to alert General Mundi myself."
"That would be a foolhardy move, Anakin. We can't divide our troops again, and we don't have time to double back to the surface," Obi-Wan replied. "Every moment we waste puts Luminara in greater danger."
They continued on deeper into the tunnels. As they got closer the air got warmer and the stink got worse.
Grim didn't say anything as internally she complained about the heat and smell. Another's life was at risk and so Grim kept her attention focused on saving Luminara.
"The air is warmer down here, we must be getting close," said Obi-Wan.
"Oh, forget the heat," Anakin replied, coughing. "It smells down here."
"Keep your voice down," Grim said.
"I'm just saying, this planet is rotten from the inside out," Anakin replied.
"I don't disagree with you, Skywalker," said Grim.
They reached a giant room. Where the queen sat in the center. "Oh I have a bad feeling about this," said Anakin.
"Behold, the queen of the bugs," Grim whispered.
"Any sign of Luminara?" asked Anakin.
"She's suspended in front of the throne," replied Cody.
"Perfect," said Anakin. "What about Poggle?"
"He's speaking with the queen."
"Good. You take the soldiers. I'll take the queen."
"Must you always rush into things?" Obi-Wan asked him.
"Oh, no, you don't actually want to talk to it, do you?" Anakin asked.
"As a matter of fact I do," replied Obi-Wan.
"Would you really expect anything different from Master Kenobi?" Grim asked Anakin.
"Anakin, don't you wonder why they took Luminara captive?" Obi-Wan asked him. "Why not just kill her?"
"She's leverage, she's a hostage," Anakin replied.
"Leverage for what?" Obi-Wan asked him.
"There's something else going on here," Grim agreed.
"And these zombies are connected to it," added Obi-Wan, agreeing.
"Fine, we'll try it your way," Anakin said, seeing the two had a point.
"Glad you agree," said Grim with a smug look.
"Cody, set your men up around the perimeter," Obi-Wan said. "These creatures live in darkness. The light from your helmet should blind them temporarily. Turn your lamps on at my signal. They should create enough confusion for us to get Luminara out of here."
"But what happens when the bugs pursue?" Cody asked. "You've seen them in action, sir. We can't kill them."
"Maybe not, but we can bury them," said Grim.
"Grim's right, it'll at least slow them down. Shoot out the support pillars and this whole place will collapse," said Anakin.
"Let's go," Obi-Wan said.
The three Jedi approached the queen. "How did you know they wouldn't just attack us?" Anakin asked Obi-Wan.
"Because I make observations while you think with your lightsaber," Obi-Wan replied.
"Well, that quick thinking of mine is usually needed when your observations get us into trouble," Anakin retorted.
Grim sighed, "boys your grown men, can the two of you not bicker for one minute?"
The two of them went quiet for a moment at that comment from Grim.
"I thought I told you not to follow me, Master Kenobi," Luminara said.
"Yes, well, I took a lesson from Anakin and Grim, and decided not to follow orders," Obi-Wan replied.
"Hey!" Grim and Anakin said together.
"You are the creatures that attacked Geonosia," said the queen. "Why have you come before me?"
"Your Majesty, it is a pleasure to finally meet you," Obi-Wan told her. "I am Obi-Wan Kenobi, and this is Anakin Skywalker, and Grim Kennet. It is our sad duty to inform you that your rule is at an end."
"You not dictate to me, Jedi. My empire is forever."
"Yeah, I can think of someone else who thinks that way and their Empire lasted only a little over twenty years," muttered Grim under her breath. Nobody heard her, however.
"I'm afraid it does not appear that way, your grace," Obi-Wan told the queen. "You shall release the Jedi Luminara and submit to Republic law."
The queen let out a horrible growl that turned into a screech. "I no submit to you!" she shouted at the Jedi.
The zombies got closer to the three and Grim and Anakin ignited their lightsabers, ready to fight. "No, you two. Patience, wait," Obi-Wan told them. The two deactivated their lightsabers and the zombies confiscated all the weapons.
Obi-Wan continued to address the queen, as Anakin and Grim stood behind him glaring at her. "Majesty, destroying us shall only make the Republic's judgment of you harsher."
"No, Jedi. No!" said the queen. "I no destroy you. I devour you. I control you. I had but one Jedi before young Poggle bring me. But now I have four."
"Yeah, that's still going to make the Republic's judgment of you a lot harsher," said Grim. Obi-Wan looked at Grim and she went quiet.
The queen went on; "now, watch as my child enters your Jedi friend." One of the zombies began to walk up to Luminara carrying a hatched egg with a worm going around inside it. He handed the egg to Poggle. The queen continued to explain. "And once inside, her mind becomes my mind." Poggle lifted the worm up. "Her thoughts, my thoughts."
"It's a sort of mind control, a hive mind," Obi-Wan whispered. "She thinks she can possess us."
"Really? I hadn't figured that out yet," replied Grim sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
"Find out everything you wanted to know yet?" Anakin asked him.
"No, wait. I want to see how it works."
"I don't think Luminara wants to see how it works," Grim and Anakin both said.
"No, I don't," Luminara agreed.
"I'm curious. The more we know the better," Obi-Wan said.
"I disagree," said Lumina.
"So do I," said Anakin.
"As do I," said Grim.
"Come now. The nose or the ear, which do you think it will enter?" Obi-Wan asked them.
Poggle lifted the worm and placed it on Luminara's head. Grim and Anakin sighed, "I think the nose," they agreed.
"Ugh, I hope this is part of the plan," said Luminara.
"Isn't it always?" Obi-Wan asked. "Cody, now!"
Light filled the room and in the confusion the Jedi used the Force to grab their lightsabers back.
Anakin freed Luminara and handed her back her lightsaber.
Obi-Wan used the Force to grab the worm, seeming to study it.
"Urgh, don't tell me you want to study that thing, Master?"
"I do," said Obi-Wan. "It could be useful to know about."
Grim rolled her eyes, "you are such a nerd, Obi-Wan."
Grim and Obi-Wan worked together to cut down several bugs to make their escape. "Obi-Wan look out!" Anakin cried, taking the worm and smashing it under his foot.
"Wha- Anakin, no! I was going to study that!" Obi-Wan exclaimed.
"Study the bottom of my boot!" Anakin retorted as he continued to run.
Obi-Wan looked at the dead worm dejectedly. "Master, come on! We have to get out of here, worry about the stupid worm you wanted to study later!" shouted Grim, grabbing his arm and dragging him.
They ran through the catacombs. Light was shining from the ceiling. "There! That's our way out!" shouted Luminara.
"Start climbing!" said Obi-Wan.
Everyone began to climb and the tunnels and catacombs began to collapse. Suddenly they were blasted out of the hole with a bunch of dust.
Grim coughed as she got up and continued to run. "Remind me not to be around Master Kenobi when he's negotiating!" shouted Grim as she got outside the Temple just before it collapsed.
"Well, all things considered, it went better than I expected," said Anakin.
"I still wish we got one of those worms," said Obi-Wan. "Seeing how the queen controlled her minions could have proven to be valuable."
"Well hopefully the secret's buried with her," said Anakin.
"Well, I'd be careful about what you wish for, Master," said Grim vaguely. "Well, at least that's done with. For now."
Obi-Wan looked at Grim. She was implying something about the future again. Grim just shrugged and they headed off to deliver Poggle to Coruscant.
Except the problem was that there was trouble on Dantooine so there also needed to be a supply run to deliver medical supplies. Though Ahsoka and Barriss were sent to deal with that.
However some of the worms had managed to make their way onto that ship.
When they had gotten that news Grim had whispered to Obi-Wan, "looks like you'll get your chance to study after all."
In the end everything turned out alright though.
Another victory. Another day.
