Chapter 11: Silly Plans and Hopeful Dreams
Grim loved it when there were no missions to call her and her Master away from the Temple.
When the war seemed far away even if it was always prevalent.
It was during this time away from war that she was able to focus more on her training. Obi-Wan would teach Grim many things about the Jedi and the galaxy. The Padawan would listen with much interest.
Some time ago she would feel lost. Even here, in fact sometimes the battlefield would make her feel more found. Now however she wasn't as lost. She knew exactly where she was.
Grim was home. The Jedi Temple was her home and the Jedi her family. This feeling of belonging, this acceptance and understanding only solidified her goal more.
Save as many people as possible. Save the galaxy. Save the Jedi. Save her family. Stop the Sith. Stop Sidious. Stop Order 66.
Here at her home she decided to put some plans into action. To get evidence that Chancellor Palpatine was not the kind elderly almost grandfatherly figure to the Republic. To prove he was behind that deceptive mask a deplorable man, who feeds off the suffering of others, the Sith Lord behind this atrocious war.
The question was how.
How was Grim meant to get evidence of something so well masked and disguised? So clouded by secrets and darkness. So well hidden that even the wisest of Jedi were so deceived.
That was when an idea struck the young Padawan. She would sneak into Palpatine's office and gather any evidence she could. Then she could leave the rest to the Jedi and the Republic.
After all, surely Palpatine couldn't manipulate everything?
Grim left the Temple and headed to the Senate building. Using the excuse she was "going on a walk" to avoid suspicion.
When she did eventually reach the building she stopped upon spotting the Coruscant Guard. They had slipped her mind when she created this half baked plan. She paused and hid behind a trashcan to consider her options. It wasn't like she could just waltz into the building.
Not as a Padawan. Especially considering she was unaccompanied.
She needed to sneak in, and she absolutely could not be spotted.
Figuring out a plan she stood up. When she did she smacked her head on the trashcan causing it to tumble on top of her. The trash covering her.
"Ah motherfuc- motherkarker," muttered Grim. Quickly correcting her curse to curse as someone in Star Wars should.
Grim stood up again and dusted herself off only to see that several members of the Coruscant Guard were staring at her.
"Commander Kennet? What are you doing here?" Fox asked her.
"Uh......crime?" said Grim. "I mean- um- I'M TAKING THIS TRASHCAN NOW BYE-" she picked it up and ran away.
Fox stared after her for a moment. "Did- did she just steal a trashcan?"
Grim ran for several minutes before realizing she was still carrying the trashcan. Realizing her mistake she quickly put it someplace unsuspicious and took a moment to pause and catch her breath.
"Did I really admit I was committing a crime to Commander Fox??" Grim asked herself. "What was I thinking?? Then to top it off I stole a trashcan! The same one that fell on me! Could I be more of an idiot? Master Kenobi can not know I just did that. And I need to come up with a better plan."
And so Grim went back to her room to continue coming up with plans on how to sneak into Palpatine's office.
Looking back on it. Every one of her plans had been foolish from the start. In all honesty her plans were nearly out of a children's cartoon. Which - in fairness - she was technically living through one. However these were the plans out of something such as Looney Tunes, not that of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Many of her plans included disguises.
Her first one had been to disguise herself as a potted plant. Surprising even herself she had managed to actually get inside the building. Unfortunately Fox had spotted her sprinting through a hallway and had arrested her.
After waiting for nearly an hour and a half Obi-Wan got her out. He apologized to Fox and began to lecture Grim while also bewildered as to how Grim had even managed to come up with such a plan. Not to mention as to why she had done so.
Grim's next plan was built on top of her last one.
This time she was the one who was delivering the plant, instead of being the plant. Which was definitely a considerable improvement. She had even managed to get further in. Except ironically enough there had actually been somebody delivering a potted plant to Palpatine's office who was supposed to be there. Someone who Grim happened to run directly into.
That time she had just sprinted away without getting caught. Although several witnesses heard her mutter a string of curse words that did not originate from the universe.
And yet her planned disguises only got worse.
She attempted to disguise herself once as Mas Amedda in the worst painted-cardboard-duct-tape mesh known to the galaxy.
She had made it further when she knocked over the trashcan.
For her final disguise she attempted to pretend to be the chancellor himself. Except she ran into him. They had stared at each other for a long minute before Grim panicked and jumped out a window.
She had fun explaining that one to her Master.
The next time hadn't even started as a plan.
Obi-Wan had been teaching Grim how to drive a speeder when an impulsive and chaotic decision had hit her.
She pretended to not understand what Obi-Wan was telling her to do and "accidentally" ended up through the window of Palpatine's office.
Obi-Wan apologized to the Chancellor on the behalf of his Padawan.
When they returned to the Temple he then had a long talk with Grim about what had happened and how she could've killed someone.
"I wish I had hit Palpabitch," she muttered under her breath irritably. Luckily, Obi-Wan didn't seem to hear.
Grim's final attempt was how she had learned that caf was not just "Star Wars Coffee".
She had decided to bribe Fox with some actual coffee instead of caf. Which would have gone well, if it hadn't been for the fact that things actually worked slightly differently between universes and as it turned out Star Wars Humans can not handle regular coffee.
Grim spent nearly two entire hours just apologizing to Fox. She had almost forgotten why she had gone in the first place.
After that Grim decided she should work far longer on her plans before executing them.
Tired of attempting to break into Palpatine's office only to get caught, Grim chose to just relax at the Temple.
She walked through the gardens. Chatted with some of her fellow Padawans. Studied in the Archives. Meditated in the Room Of A Thousand Fountains. The young Padawan found herself at peace in her home, with her family.
Grim knew one day she'd have to stop Sidious, or else all of this would be gone.
And what would happen if Sidious won his cruel game? If everything still ended the same?
But she wouldn't ask those questions.
Because not only did she know the answer, she knew that was why she wouldn't let Sidious win.
She wouldn't let it end the same.
Her earlier ideas had been foolish. Childish even, but if she really wanted to stop Sidious, she had to play his game.
Except Grim would have to change the rules, because she could not play by Sidious's rules. His rules were designed for his victory alone, and thus the game needed to be changed.
Grim went back to her quarters to work on a larger plan.
One she could execute over time. Because just as Sidious can't defeat the Jedi all at once she could not defeat him so swiftly either.
Obi-Wan was there when she entered. "Hello Grim."
"Oh, hey Master. I was just going to plan some things," admitted Grim.
"I hope you're not referring to any more crime, you've committed way too much already," Obi-Wan replied.
"Then I hope you're not hoping too hard, Master," joked Grim, as she got her datapad and jumped on her bed sitting on the edge of it. Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow at her. She chuckled and shook her head. "I'm just joking, partly at least."
Obi-Wan sighed. "Commiting crime isn't going to do you, or anyone else any good," he told her.
She huffed, "if you knew what I did you'd think differently."
"Well I can't know what you know if you don't talk to me about it," he replied.
Grim rolled her eyes and turned her focus to creating a plan. Breaking it down into steps, and even marking what plot points would be crucial to change and interfere with in order to stop Sidious.
On top of these things, Grim also created "side quests" for herself.
While stopping Order 66 was her biggest goal and challenge, she had promised to save as many lives as possible, and that wasn't just limited to the Jedi. It was also true for the clones, innocent lives, and many other people.
It meant as many lives, which included all life.
Grim listed events she wanted to prevent or change. Lives she wanted to help and save. And she listed things she could do to succeed in these goals.
She sighed and set down her datapad. She leaned back and just kicked off her boots. "Trying to change the future is exhausting."
"Is that why you were disguised as a potted plant earlier, or why you stole that trashcan?" Obi-Wan asked her. "You were attempting to 'change the future'?"
"You wouldn't understand," she grumbled. Turning around on her bed and putting her face on her pillow.
"Well I don't understand, either way," he replied. Although he didn't push further.
Grim's actions confused him as often as her words did at times, but he knew that it was up to her to be open to him about whatever it was she pushed herself to do.
As much as he wishes she would. From what he has overheard her say everything she was trying to prevent was not something she should be doing on her own.
The other members of the Council agreed on this well, but they all knew they couldn't make Grim tell them everything. It was her choice, and as such it was up to her.
All Obi-Wan could do was teach Grim, and help shape her into becoming a great Jedi Knight, as he knows she can be.
All he could do was guide her.
And Grim could do so much more.
She could talk to people. And she knew she should, and yet a buried and foolish fear kept her from it. She just hoped she could one day fight it.
In time there was a chance that the story of The Clone Wars could have a happy ending. Grim just had to work to make sure that chance would never pass.
Victory could one day be achieved, and the Padawan knew it.
And so for this victory she would work towards it. Even if sometimes her ideas were foolish plans that belonged in Looney Tunes. Or maybe now, they would be the plans that fit for a war.
Grim knew too, that she had friends and family who were there to support and guide her. It was for these people she continued to fight, even if at times the odds seemed stacked against her. And she knew all too well that they were.
She yawned, tired from the day's foolish activities. But hopeful from the new plans they had spawned.
She turned onto her side and pulled up the covers, letting her eyes flutter close and her mind drift to sleep.
And that night, she dreamt of hope.
