Chapter 7: Bounty Hunters

The Republic had lost contact with a medical station orbiting Felucia. As such Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and their Padawans Grim Kennet and Ahsoka Tano had been sent to investigate.

"That's Felucia, dead ahead," Anakin told the others.

"But where's the medical station?" Grim asked.

"I don't see anything on my scanners," replied Ahsoka. "Wait there's something," she said. Just then a strange object opened and several droids were launched from it. "Vulture droids," Ahsoka said angrily.

"Hold on," said Anakin as he began to dodge the droids' attacks.

"Well I guess we know what happened to that medical station," Obi-Wan commented looking out the window.

Grim rolled her eyes, "not funny, Master."

Just then the ship was hit and alarms began to beep. "That's not good!" exclaimed Obi-Wan.

"You don't say!" retorted Grim.

"They took out the plasma conduits!" Ahsoka said.

The ship had entered the atmosphere and it was clear a crash landing was inevitable. "You thinking what I'm thinking?" Anakin asked everyone.

"Almost certainly not!" Obi-Wan replied as the four of them put on breathing masks.

"I wish I wasn't," remarked Grim.

"Looks like we're doing this the hard way. Starting ejection sequence!" Anakin shouted.

"Why is it that every time you fly, we crash?!" Ahsoka asked.

"It's not my fault! It's the ship's!"

"Ready to eject!" Grim shouted, interrupting their argument.

"Wait! Now!"

As one the four of them ejected out of the ship, a yellow orb protection covering their seats as they crash landed.

Grim grit her teeth and closed her eyes as she bounced off of the native plants of the world. Once she landed on the ground she exited and groaned. "Urgh, I think I'm going to puke."

"Are you alright?" Anakin asked Obi-Wan as he had exited rubbing his neck and groaning.

"I'm fine Anakin," he replied. Behind them Grim puked. Obi-Wan turned around, "Are you alright?"

"I just threw up, what do you think?" she remarked. "But yes, I actually am fine."

"Where on Felucia do you think we are?" Ahsoka asked.

"I'm not sure," Obi-Wan replied.

The four Jedi walked on. Loud footsteps were heard. "I don't like the sound of that," Grim said.

"And I don't like the look of that," replied Anakin pointing to the two giant creatures crossing their path. "Be quiet, we don't want to scare them."

"We can't just wander around aimlessly, we need a plan," Obi-Wan said.

"Well you've always taught me to trust my instincts, and my instincts say to go that way," Anakin replied, pointing behind them.

Obi-Wan stroked his beard, "no, no, that doesn't seem right. My instincts say to go this way."

Grim and Ahsoka shared a look as their Masters bickered. "Idiots," Grim whispered to her. "How are they supposed to be the best?"

Ahsoka giggled a little at her comment, shaking her head. "It's a mystery," she whispered back.

"Should we tell them about the smoke?" asked Grim.

"We probably should," Ahsoka agreed.

"Masters if the two of you are done with your amusing argument," Grim told the two adults. "There's smoke just on the horizon."

"Which means people, and a way off this planet," Ahsoka concluded.

Two two Masters looked between their Padawans and the smoke. Grim and Ahsoka had already started in that direction and so Anakin and Obi-Wan followed them. The group walked beside each other until they came across a village.

"Look, there's a village," said Ahsoka.

"Maybe they have a ship we could....borrow," said Anakin. Grim gave him a look with the way he said "borrow" and rolled her eyes.

As they entered the village Ahsoka took note of the plants. "They're growing healing herbs."

"Nysillim, I believe, one of the most valuable crops in the galaxy," said Obi-Wan.

"Nerd much, Master?" Grim jokes.

"Just observant," he replied.

"Speaking of, this place looks deserted," Ahsoka noted.

"That can't be right, the crops are ready to harvest, and tools are lying about," Obi-Wan replied. "No, something is amiss."

"Well there's one thing I've learned where I grew up," said Anakin. "Want to know what a farmer's up to? Look in their barn."

The four Jedi approached the barn and Anakin opened it. Inside there was a ship, though it wasn't fit for the people who lived in the village. "That's an odd ship for farmers, perhaps someone is here to pick up the Sillim."

"I still don't get it," said Ahsoka."Where is everyone?"

"Perhaps they're hiding," suggested Grim.

"Hiding? From what?" asked Obi-Wan.

She shrugged, "pirates, perhaps. You did mention that Nysillim is one of the most valuable crops in the galaxy."

"That is a possibility," he replied. "We should see if we can't find the villagers."

The four split up in pairs, each Master-Padawan duo searching a different area of the village.

Grim noted four bounty hunters enter the home that Anakin and Ahsoka had entered. She elbowed Obi-Wan in the ribs to get his attention. "Master, look," she said, pointing to the bounty hunters that had followed the other two Jedi. Obi-Wan nodded, and the two of them followed.

"Four against one? You mean four against two," Ahsoka was saying.

"We don't count you knee-high," one bounty hunter remarked.

Obi-Wan ignited his lightsaber, and Grim followed. "Do you count me?" Obi-Wan asked.

"What do I not count either?" asked Grim.

"Sorry Tiny but you're shorter than Snips," Anakin replied.

"Did you just-"

The bounty hunters glared at the Jedi, their blasters pointed at each of them. A small alien man with a pea-shaped head rushed into the home. "Wait! Don't fight! Can't you see these are Jedi? We are saved!"

"Saved?" Ahsoka asked.

"Need I remind you Cassis? You've already made a deal with us," replied the zabrak.

"But with the Jedi's help-"

"Excuse me," said Ahsoka. "But help you with what?"

"Pirates," Cassis replied.

Now night had fallen and Cassis explained to the four Jedi the situation in which the village was in. "...So if we stay here and we don't give the pirates a portion of our crops, they will destroy our homes, with us in them."

"Hm, I see your delima," replied Obi-Wan.

"Sillim farming is a meager trade. Without our herbs to sell we will have no money for food, fuel or equipment."

"And yet you can afford to pay mercenaries?" Obi-Wan asked.

"These bounty hunters drive a far more reasonable bargain than the pirates," he explained.

"Why not just fight them yourselves?" asked Anakin.

"Easy for you to say, perhaps. We're farmers not warriors. Even with the bounty hunters' help, I had feared the worst. Now there are eight of you!"

Grim wanted to say something about how Jedi were not warriors either, but rather keepers of the peace. Though she somehow felt that between Obi-Wan and Anakin's armor, and the fact that they were currently all leaders in a war, the statement would mean nothing.

Even before The Clone Wars people saw the Jedi as warriors, the war had only rectified that image in all the worse ways.

"What do you want, Jedi?" Suki asked.

"We need a ship. Ours is beyond repair I'm afraid," explained Obi-Wan.

"The one in the barn would work," said Anakin.

"That's our ride. It doesn't go anywhere without us, and right now we're busy," Suki replied.

"Busy extorting farmers?" Obi-Wan remarked.

"I don't hear you offering to help," she retorted.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't help even if we wanted to," Obi-Wan replied.

"What?" Grim and Ahsoka gasped.

The four Jedi walked outside the house. "Masters, these farmers are in trouble! Why can't we help them?" Ahsoka demanded.

"I thought our job as Jedi is to help people!" Grim added.

"Believe me Padawans, I would like nothing more. But we need to report that the medical station has been destroyed," Obi-Wan told them. "If we stay here too long the Separatists may show up looking for us here."

Grim was going to argue back, but she saw Obi-Wan's point. Despite wishing to help the farmers, she also understood exactly what he meant. She sighed, "I suppose that's true."

"But-" Ahsoka started.

"Better they get robbed by pirates, than to attract the interest of General Grievous and his hoard," Obi-Wan said.

It was harsh but true. The war didn't leave many options for them to help people in these ways. Grim felt bad for that, but she knew that was how it was designed. Crafted by the Sith to force Jedi into spots like these.

"Pirates! Pirates!" one of the villager younglings cried out. "The pirates are back!"

The four Jedi turned from their discussion and the bounty hunters and farmers left the house to see what the matter was. A gang of pirates drove up on their speeder bikes.

"That's far enough!" Suki told them. "I speak for the people of this village. State your name and business!"

"My name is my own business! And my business is taking what's ours!" one of the pirates called out.

"There is nothing here that is yours! Unless you're here to buy it!"

"Buy it?" laughed someone from behind.

Grim recognized the voice before she saw him; she may have never encountered him, but she had seen the show enough times to know him anywhere.

Hondo Ohnoka stepped forward. "Kenobi, Skywalker, I can't believe you came all this way to see me."

The two Jedi looked at each other and sighed. "Hondo."

"You know each other?" Suki asked.

"Of course we do!" said Hondo. "Tell them how far back we go, Kenobi!"

"Too far I'm afraid."

Hondo laughed and placed a hand on the Jedi Master's shoulder. "And here I thought we were friends!"

"If I recall correctly y'all met after you tricked them and captured them," remarked Grim. "I dunno about you, but that doesn't sound much like friendship."

"Ha ha! So you must be Kenobi's Padawan, eh?"

"What gave it away?" she asked, crossing her arms. Standing in a similar pose as Obi-Wan.

Hondo laughed. "Ah well, then you should know that it was all just business, nothing personal."

"Your business is fucked up," she told him.

"Watch your language, there are children here," Hondo told her.

"I am a child, bitch," replied Grim

"Case in point," replied Hondo.

Grim rolled her eyes. "Very amusing," she replied. "You think you're so funny don't you?"

Obi-Wan gave Grim a look and she went silent. He then turned his attention to Hondo. "If you're truly interested in friendship, Hondo, then you would stop threatening these farmers."

"Threatening? Oh please Kenobi, do not tell me you've been listening to this bounty hunting scum!"

"Scum? We are just here to protect what's theirs."

"Oh, come, come, my dear, how much are they paying you? It doesn't matter, whatever it is I will double it. All you have to do to earn it is step aside."

"We. Don't. Break. Deals."

The pirates cooked their guns and pointed them at the group. Two of the bounty hunters pointed their own guns back at the pirates.

Obi-Wan got between the leaders of the two groups. "Steady everyone."

"What's your stake anyways, Kenobi?" Hondo asked him.

"All we want is a ride to the nearest Republic outpost, and I'm willing to pay you handsomely for it, twice what you can make selling this crop," Obi-Wan replied.

"And how do you plan to pay me?"

"A funds transfer when we arrive."

"Republic credits? We've been over this before, Kenobi. We don't accept that currency."

"I'm offering a deal that benefits us all, Hondo. Don't let your greed blind you to that fact."

"You know I like you Kenobi, but, um, nobody leaves this planet until I get my Sillim."

"Then I hope you enjoy your stay, because you'll be staying here a long time, parasite!" Suki told him.

"You know, this crop has not yet been harvested," Hondo noted. He walked over to the village leader. "You better hurry old man, before things start to die on you."

With that Hondo and his gang of pirates left.

"Well Grim, it seems your hunch about pirates was right," Obi-Wan told her. There was that unspoken understanding between the two that Grim had seen these very events play out.

"Told you so," she replied smugly.

Obi-Wan chuckled lightly and shook his head.

"Wait...did Hondo understand Earth curse words?" asked Grim as the realization dawned on her.

"I wouldn't overthink it, Padawan," Obi-Wan replied. "He probably picked up on context clues with how you said it."

"Yeah, but it wouldn't be out of character for him to somehow know Earth curse words. He's just like that," shrugged Grim.

Now they were back inside sitting around a table with a hologram showing the area. They had to plan for the incoming attack.

"When the attack comes, it will come from two fronts," Obi-Wan was saying.

"The forest from the south and the ridge from the north," he said as he indicated the places on the holomap. "Whatever you do, you must defend both sides."

"But there are only four of them," one of the villagers pointed out to the Jedi Master. "How can four bounty hunters defend against so many?"

"The farmers are right, these bounty hunters don't stand a chance," whispered Anakin.

"We've been over this, Anakin," Obi-Wan replied.

"You seem to lack confidence in our abilities, young Jedi," Suki told Anakin.

"Look, I'm sure you're good at what you do," said Anakin. "But you're in way too deep."

"Said the peacekeeper that fails to keep the peace," she retorted.

"Yeah, well that isn't our fault. This war has long been crafted to devastate the galaxy. The Sith created this war to destroy the Jedi, it is not our fault the galaxy is the way it is," said Grim aggressively.

She could not stand to hear about how people blamed the Jedi for the war. Not when the Jedi would be the ones who fell victim to it in the end. If she failed to change it. Though she would not allow that to happen.

"What my Padawan means to say is that the rift in the galaxy is not our fault. If more worlds would stand up for themselves against the Separatist this war would've been over long ago," Obi-Wan said.

"That's it!" said Anakin. "We can train the villagers to defend themselves!"

"But we are just simple farmers! Why are we paying bounty hunters to defend us if we are just going to just end up doing it ourselves?" one villager asked.

"Hush Gilani," the leader said.

"Trust me, we'll have you ready," said Anakin.

After a good night's rest day came, and it was time to teach the villagers how to defend themselves. The Jedi split to help with different things.

Obi-Wan worked with Suki to prepare for the attack. Anakin worked to teach the villagers how to fight with their farming tools while Grim and Ahsoka worked together to teach the villagers how to fight with slingshots.

Grim and Ahsoka split to teach their own groups. Hoping to teach them more efficiently in this way. Unlike before Grim kept all her focus on her task rather than allowing herself to become distracted by her crush.

This time it was Ahsoka who every once in a while looked to catch a glimpse of Grim teaching the others. Her heart fluttered in her chest when she did and she caught herself blushing slightly. Shaking her head she focused more on her task.

She could not become distracted from a crush. If that even was what it was, after all Grim was her best friend.

That was when Ahsoka noticed one of the bounty hunters that was helping out almost be crushed by the plant he was cutting down. "Wait! It's too heavy!" she called out, shoving him out of the way.

Grim looked up at the sound of Ahsoka's cry, and saw the situation. She went over as well. "Are you okay?" Grim asked.

"Don't look! I'm having an armor malfunction!" he replied.

Grim and Ahsoka exchanged a look.

He stood up and they both saw his true self. "Not so intimidating am I?" he asked.

"You don't have to look tough, to be tough," Ahsoka told him.

"I thank you for your help," he said as he put his helmet back on.

Grim and Ahsoka smiled and went back to teaching the villagers.

It was afternoon when the attack began. The farmers, Jedi, and bounty hunters got into positions. Grim and Ahsoka standing side by side.

As three pirates headed their way the Padawans activated their lightsabers. The green and purple glow of their blades illuminated them.

The pirates began to fire and the two ran while deflecting the shots, leading them into a trap in which two of the pirates crashed.

The other avoided the attack, and destroyed the bounty hunter's armor, however the small bounty hunter jumped out and defeated the pirate.

Grim, Ahsoka, and one of the farmers ran over to help, but he had done so on his own. The two Padawans shared a smile.

The battle went on, as Grim and Ahsoka worked together to take down and defeat more pirates.

Grim lost in the sensation of combat, feeling herself float through it. Not letting anything distract her.

Ahsoka was even more graceful, though she found herself taking more notice of Grim than usual. How she fought and carried herself in battle. She kept her focus on the fight, ignoring the thoughts.

When the fighting was done, Grim and Ahsoka went back with their Masters. The Jedi and bounty hunters stood outside the barn, behind the leader as he spoke to the villagers.

"There are crops to harvest, fields to till. Huts to rebuild. Now, let's get to work," he said.

He then turned to address the two very different groups that had helped him defend his village. "How can I ever thank you for saving our village?" he asked them.

"We didn't save your village, Cassis. Your people did," replied Anakin.

"For the first time in my memory, my people don't have to be afraid. We will never forget you," with that he left.

Suki came up to Obi-Wan and Anakin. "I seem to find myself light on company," she told them. One of her fellow bounty hunters, having died in the attack. "Still need that ride back to the Republic outpost?"

"If it wouldn't be any inconvenience," Obi-Wan replied.

"Quite the opposite, it would be my pleasure," she replied.

With that the group of seven entered the ship. It was time to head back home.
