27- Heavy hearts
Why?
That was the only question Selena had asked her, after Swara had told her the entire truth.
Why would she do that to her? Had she done something wrong to earn this type of punishment? Was she taking revenge about something? Why would she ruin her life like that?
There were too many questions running in Selena's mind, but she could only manage to ask why. Selena knew if she spoke more, then the tears she had barely managed to stop would fall down like a freaking waterfall.
She didn't want to cry in front of her. No matter how devastated she was, she didn't want to look weak. She didn't want to look like a person Swara could easily crush.
"Selena please understand, it wasn't in her hands. She didn't do it on purpose. Just see the diary and you will find her efforts to—," Naman tried to explain, but Selena emptied the ink pot on him, rendering him speechless.
"Shut it," Selena warned.
"What the—" Naman spluttered out, wiping his face to clear out the ink, but ended up making a bigger mess instead.
Selena would have laughed at him if this was some other day.
The readers kept glancing at the commotion. Even more when they noticed how blue the ink covered Naman was.
"Sorry the library is closed for today. We will compensate you later," Selena's mom took over, letting the readers out, all while apologizing profusely. No one needed to see the show.
They all waited until the library was empty to continue speaking. Pin drop silence had formed outside, however the chaos running in everyone's mind was anything but silent.
The moment the last reader left, Swara spoke up to apologise but got cut off in the middle. "I...I didn't do it on purpose. I didn't know that this story would come alive. I had no idea—"
"Until you did," Selena finished, closing her eyes as tears finally started falling down, with no mood to stop. "You should have come clean the moment you found out."
"Why would she?" Amaya snorted. "After all, it must have been fun playing with our lives. Not everyone gets to play God. What a lucky lady!" Amaya muttered, letting out a sardonic chuckle.
"Enough!" Naman yelled at Amaya, "Don't blurt out nonsense."
He made a huge mistake. He should have listened to Swara. They should have told the truth to Selena in private. This girl was instigating Selena more. If it wasn't for her, Selena would have been more open to listen to their explanation.
He turned towards Selena in desperation. "Don't listen to Amaya. Swara wasn't enjoying this. She never did. She was trying her best to stop all this, to save you. Just look at the diary." Naman urged, but Selena swatted his hand, making the diary fall somewhere on the floor.
"Why didn't she come forward to tell the truth then? Why continue the act and make me trust her? Why build a relationship?" Selena cried out angrily.
It wouldn't have hurt this much in the start. Sure, she must have still sprouted profanities at her, However it wouldn't break her heart like this.
'May be, that was her plan. Build the trust so much that Selena couldn't help but forgive her for the sake of their friendship. Maybe that's how she brought Naman to her team. Poor guy, didn't even know he was getting manipulated and was taking her side.' Selena thought bitterly.
She didn't want to fall for any more of her manipulation. Wiping away her tears harshly with the back of her hand, Selena commanded, "Get out."
Swara's heart fell at her words, but still she gathered courage to try one more time.
"Selena I..."
"Get out," Selena yelled, pushing Swara with all her force. She wasn't going to fall for her lies again.
Swara was about to fall because of the force, but Naman caught her just in time.
"Let's just go," Naman whispered, before pulling the crying Swara back to her feet.
"But—"
"We will try to explain again once she calms down," Naman said, holding her hand.
They walked out of the library with heavy hearts. Naman turned back to look at Selena one last time. But Selena turned her face away as soon as he noticed his stare.
Naman lowered his eyes at her clear rejection.
He hadn't thought that this would go so wrong. He had thought Selena would understand as soon as she found out that Swara didn't do anything on purpose. Just like he did.
But he was wrong. So so wrong. His heart bled looking at both the heartbroken girls.
Selena looked at the back of their retreating figures, before falling on her knees, crying uncontrollably.
How much she had trusted the author. Here she thought that the author was her blessing, who would help her beat the curse, not even knowing that the author was the one who created it.
No wonder Swara knew everything about the library. Swara had always known when the library would fall in danger and how to save it. She had known about the glowing pen, books, and how those books were related to Naman's life.
Selena had thought that Swara knew all those things because she was also an author, not even knowing that she was THE AUTHOR. Swara didn't guess those things, she had written them.
Just how foolish she had been trusting Swara's lies! Blindly trusting her own enemy. The one responsible for every wrong thing that has happened in her life.
Selena's mom gathered her in a tight hug as her whole form shook in agony. Amaya too sat beside them, patting Selena's back in comfort with her one hand. While a fist formed on the other in anger, thinking about all the pain and suffering they went through.
All for someone's entertainment!
