36- Daughters of the Moon

They all had gathered again the next day, after getting the much needed sleep.

Selena stared at Mann from afar as he discussed something with Swara. Even if she had told them it didn't matter whom he chose, a part of her would still hurt if she wasn't the one. Though she would never let it out.

"Don't worry, he is all yours," Vriha said, taking a seat beside her. She hadn't missed those longing looks.

"You don't like him?" Selena questioned, hope building inside her.

"Firstly, I just met him. So it's too early to like-like him," Vriha rolled her eyes. "And even if I did, I am leaving this world soon. So I can't have him either way."

Selena's eyebrows furrowed. "This world?"

"Oh! The book world. Of course, stupid me. Totally forgot that you are a real human," Selena said, slapping her forehead.

"No, the real world," Vriha told her, curling her lips.

"You...are sick?"

Vriha hummed, picking at her fingers. Selena didn't know how to sympathize so she just looked at her smiling sadly.

"Idea!" Selena uttered suddenly.

"How about asking Swara to turn you into a book character? That will prolong your life as Swara will be the one who will decide your fate."

"And how will I align with the story?" Vriha raised an eyebrow. "Especially when my personality clashes with the female lead."

"We can be twins," Selena said, clasping her hands excitedly.

"Two sisters fighting over the same man. Perfectly cliche story," Vriha laughed, shaking her head.

Selena's shoulder slumped down. Vriha wasn't accepting any of her ideas.

"Don't be so down," Vriha said, pushing Selena's shoulder with hers. "I will ask her to try something, happy?"

"Very."

"What a major plot hole!" Misha exclaimed when Mann pointed out a major mistake in the story.

Misha too had arrived some time ago to join them, having found out about the truth.

Misha had been waiting at Swara's home when both the girls returned last night.

Misha had been suspicious when Swara was frantically trying to find Naman. She had helped Swara without asking anything, but when she couldn't contact Swara as well, Misha had grown concerned.

Swara tried making excuses but eventually she told her the truth about everything. Swara was worried that Misha would either think she was crazy or get angry for keeping this secret for so long.

But Misha being Misha, had an altogether different reaction.

"Sooo, am I a character as well?"

"No, you are just a normal human."

"How boring." Misha huffed.

Coming back to the present, Misha laughed loudly at the stupid error Swara committed.

Vriha and Selena too joined them, not to laugh but to help out a distressed Swara.

"What happened?" They asked in unison, before glancing at each other and clearing their throats.

"She...she forgot to write about the fathers," Misha said in between the laughs.

"In the story, there's only mention of grandmothers, mother and Selena. There is no mention of a male partner. But generations cannot move ahead with only females," Mann explained more elaborately.

"You didn't have a father?" Vriha asked Selena.

"I don't think I have ever thought about having or missing one either," Selena said, scratching her head.

"It's fine you will get him now," Naman assured Selena, before turning towards Swara, "Make sure to write a loving and caring father figure."

He didn't want Selena to end up in a family like him.

"Umm...."

They all turned towards Selena's mother, who walked towards them hesitantly.

"I... actually..."

"Please speak freely," Swara said politely, standing up from her seat.

"Let me know if you have some suggestions," Swara said. After all, it wasn't only a character but her life partner they were discussing.

"If nothing is set in stone yet, I have a person in my mind," Selena's mother said, averting her eyes from Selena in shame.

"No need to hide, I already know who he is." Selena snorted. She hadn't missed those lovely dovey looks.

"There is someone?" Swara asked, surprised.

"Oh yes! There is. Mom just didn't make it official because she was withering away," Selena informed. It just came to her mind that Vriha was doing something similar as well.

"But since I am doing okay now, I thought...," Selena's mom trailed off, looking at Swara hopefully.

Her health had improved tremendously since she had registered those four novels. A hope had finally started building in her chest.

"Of course. It can happen. Who is he? Is he someone I know?" Swara questioned. She had to get all the facts right, before penning down anything.

"He is actually a reader who often comes by. He is also a doctor," Selena answered instead.

"Oh I remember," Swara said. "He was there at the right time when her health suddenly deteriorated. He helped her survive that day, didn't he?"

"And then he started being a regular here. He hasn't been able to cure Mom completely but because of his treatment, mom's condition has been way better than any of our ancestors," Selena said.

"What are you talking about?" Swara's eyebrows furrowed. "That was a one time thing."

"What do you mean?" Naman asked the question that was running in everyone's mind.

"That was his only scene. He wasn't supposed to return and keep treating her."

"Don't complete the sentence," Naman pleaded.

"He is an extra," Swara finished, making Naman sigh. He hated that word.

"Perhaps there was an error. Just like I ended up delivering the books for months instead of a day like I was supposed to; perhaps that doctor is also stuck in a loop." Naman assumed.

"No, I am sure his entry was clear. See," Swara said, opening the page of the diary where the entry was and showing it to everyone one by one.

"Then that means he came by his own will," Selena's mother muttered, feeling the butterflies.

"Wait! If he becomes her partner, will he become Selena's biological father or step father?" Misha questioned all of a sudden.

"I mean, Selena is already here. And you know if they do the deed now, then...," Misha trailed off, muffling her laughter.

"Can we not? There are kids around here," Swara said, annoyed.

"We can't get married then?" Selena's mother asked worriedly. She wanted to get with him, but not at Selena's expense.

"You can," Swara assured. "But how about letting things happen naturally?" Swara asked, using Selena's idea of letting the love happen on its own.

"Is it alright if I don't make him her father in the story? He can naturally become a father figure for her if they get along."

"Then what about their creation? How were they born?" Mann asked. The situation was back to the starting point.

Swara looked up in frustration, before her eyes fell on the Moon.

She turned towards Naman. "Remember asking me if the Librarians fed on the Moon's energy for survival?"

"Ye..s?"

"How about directly being born from the Moon?"

"That's illogical," Mann spoke, before Naman could. "You need two people for procreation."

Swara let out a defeated sigh.

"Like everything in this world is logical," Naman countered. "Just look at our presence, what's logical about our life," he said, making Swara's head snap towards him with hope.

"It's a story, Fiction. It doesn't have to seem logical to everybody. You write what you want. I find it interesting and I am sure there will be others who would think the same," Naman told Swara, giving her the confidence.

"Do you really think so? You aren't just saying it to oppose what Mann said, right?" Swara asked.

"Just write."

It was set then.

Librarians were daughters of the Moon.
