Chapter 5
I walked, hugging myself as it grew dark. The warm air grew cold, kissing my face. My teeth chattered. My body felt exhausted, but I knew that I had to keep going. Everyone else was probably asleep, anyways.
The trees made an umbrella over me, making an attempt of blocking out the wind. Even with the help I was still shaking. Not just from the cold, but from the shock of seeing everyone that had ever tried to help me die. The way I stared helplessly as they slowly died. A lump formed in my throat, but I swallowed it down. My stomach pleaded for food, even though I knew that I didn't have any. If the obstacles didn't get me first, I'd probably die of dehydration and hunger.
I slid my hair tie off of my wrist and pulled my hair out of my face. Wet mud rested on my hand except where the hair tie was. I wiped it away, making it smear up my arm.
I stared at my sopping combat boots as I walked. The material was peeling at the tips, and one of the zippers was torn. I could feel the sweat from my feet ruin the inside, but I didn't care. It was just another thing about me that was being destroyed.
I startled myself as I bumped into an object, I could barely see it. I slid my palm across it, cold stone stung my skin. I walked sideways, trying to see if there was a way across it. After awhile I gave up, making the decision that there wasn't.
I would have to go over it.
I didn't know how tall the wall was, but I assumed tall enough that if I fell I would die. I slid my fingers across the wall again, feeling a hole. I placed my hand in it, feeling for another one with my other one. Soon enough I had a spot for my hands and my feet. I clutched onto the holes with my left hand as my right one felt for another spot. I could hear crickets making music from afar. I tried to zone it out as I focused on getting up. I felt completely blind as I felt around for a spot for my foot to go.
My heart leaped as my foot slipped. I kept my other foot planted and saved myself by placing my foot in the correct spot. I sucked in a deep breath, resting my forehead on the stone. The cold kept me from losing conscious right there. I bit my lip, the pain clearing my mind. Blood started to leak out of my mouth, and I continued climbing.
My fingers desperately searched for another place to grab onto, but all I felt was air. I slapped my hand on the top. I let out a sigh of relief and sat on the top, breathing heavily.
The wall was tall enough that I could see over the trees and at the sky. The moon was a light gray, shying away and only showing half of itself. Bright stars danced around the moon, smiling down at me. Telling me that everything would be alright.
I found a loose rock and tore it out of the wall, chucking it at the sky. Everything wouldn't be okay. No matter what people said, I knew that sooner or later The luck that was keeping me alive would die, leaving me with nothing. I would have no excuse to live, and the obstacles would win.
I wanted to throw another rock, but I was too tired to. The rock was large enough that I could lay down. I rested my hands under my head, closing my eyes.
A hand grabbed my arm. I yelped, jolting my arm away. An arm wrapped around the top of the rock. A girl with what looked like wavy dirty blond hair sent daggers at me with big hazel eyes. Her thin lips were pressed into a straight line. She had a piercing on her nose and over her left brow, making her look more intimidating. I took a peek on the side she was on. At least five more people were climbing after her, each of them either having piercings or tattoos.
Backstabbers.
I slid away, my heart caught in my throat. My adrenaline started to pump, and my exhaustion went away, Fear overwhelmed my body, causing it to shake harder. Blood pounded in my ears. I swung one foot on the other side, trying to find a place to put it to climb down.
The girl tried to grab me. I darted away fast enough. Her long fingernails slid across my arm, causing it to sting and left long red burning lines. She grabbed the sides with her hands and shot her foot out at me. I ducked backwards, shrieking in fear. I could barely speak as a growl came from the back of her throat.
I fiddled with the zipper of my shoe as she started crawling towards me. I didn't have anywhere to go. It was either fall or fight. Neither sounded like a winning idea.
I finally was able to rip my shoe off. I threw it at her. It hit her on the forehead, causing her to wince and stare in shock. It gave me enough time to kick her on the shoulder. She cried in surprise, and tried to grab me. I watched as my shoe toppled over the side, landing on the floor. Well, I guess I didn't need it, anyways.
I realized that the girl's friends were coming up. I find a way to go fast or it would be like the van again. The girl was close enough to me that I had a good aim for her jaw. I swung, curling my fingers into my palm. She pulled her head back in surprise. I hit her in the throat instead. She made a choking noise, placing her hands around her neck. I shook my hand, try to shake the stinging away.
While she was distracted, I tried to flee to the other side. Before I could move, someone curled their fingers around my ankle and pulled. I let out a scream and clutched onto the edge, placing my stomach on the surface. I swung my foot, the hand releasing my foot. I slid my leg onto the top, letting out a sigh of relief. I turned around and saw the girl almost at the top, her friends tailing behind her. One guy, kinda skinny and shrimpy, was right under her. The guy didn't look like all the other people. His skin was free from ink and rings, and he didn't have the muscles. He probably only joined them for survival. He obviously had no idea what happened at the end.
The girl was close, almost at the top. She was out of arm's reach, but an idea had sprung in my head. I hauled my leg over and slammed it onto her head. She screamed in pain, and she stuck her arms up to try and grab my leg. I pulled my leg up in time, so it was out of her reach. Her friend stared at the girl, who lost her holding. She grabbed the back of the boy's shirt and pulled him down with her. With a sickening crack, the girl landed on her back, and the boy on top of her. I tore my eyes away from the ground, holding in my urge to vomit.
The skinny guy sprung in front of me. I sucked in a breath of air before preparing myself for another fight. It was my life or his, and I had a feeling that the Backstabbers would get him soon enough. He tried sweeping my legs, but I jumped and pushed him back, making him fall onto his back. I grabbed his feet and pushed him off the side, making him fall off the cliff.
I had to get out of there. I continued to fight, my movements becoming a blur. Sweat stuck my shirt to my back. How many guys did they have? I didn't have time to count. Every time one fell, another climbed up. It was like an ongoing game of whack-a-mole.
After what seemed like forever the sky was quiet. Blood leaked out of my nose, and my knuckles were split open. I grabbed the bottom of my shirt and wiped the sweat off of my forehead. I placed my foot into a small hole in the wall, trying to look away from the bodies underneath my feet. They're probably crushing your shoe, I thought glumly.
I yelped as a pair of hands clutched onto my shoulders. I looked up to see a guy staring at me with a deadly look. My eyes widened. My body was paralyzed from fear. My adrenaline was wearing away, leaving me with exhaustion.
A smile crawled onto his face, matching the evil look on his dragon tattoo's face. He didn't say anything as he released my shoulders, giving me a small shove. I screamed as I fell, his satisfied face being the last thing I saw before plummeting.
And we have hit the end of this lovely, lovely, sneak peek.
