CHAPTER 12
Amy stood shivering in the early morning breeze, her thin cotton jacket doing nothing to keep the cold out.
She yawned and checked her watch, hoping that the speeches would end soon and she could go back to her warm classroom.
For whatever reason, all the elementary school teachers had come to their high school for a visit, so they had dragged all the students out into the cold for a special assembly.
Thing was, the entire high school student body didn't fit into the tiny indoor gym, so they held special assemblies out on the football field.
If she craned her neck, Amy could see over the sea of heads and see the dais they had put up near one of the end zones, where all the elementary school teachers were sitting.
Beside them, the principal was standing behind a podium and showing no signs of ending his speech.
She looked around again through the rows of students, and saw Kat trying to get her attention.
She caught her eye and waved, and Kat rolled her eyes and mimed shooting herself in the head.
Amy laughed and mouthed 'Same', and held up her watch to ask how long it was going to take.
Kat seemed to have misunderstood the gesture, because she was pointing to the dais, like she wanted Amy to see what was going on there.
Amy tried to gesture that she couldn't understand, but then everyone started clapping, indicating that the speech was over.
She motioned to Kat that they would talk later, looked back at the dais and clapped along with everyone.
As the crowd started heading back to class, Amy headed in the opposite direction towards Kat's class.
After weaving in and out of the crush of students and accidentally stepping on someone's foot, Amy finally reached Kat and said, "So. Now tell me what you were saying."
"Dude, didn't you see Miss Dahlia on the stage?", Kat spoke excitedly.
Amy frowned. "So? What's so great about that?"
"The last time we all were in the same class was in elementary school-"
"- and Miss Dahlia was our class teacher", Amy finished.
"The medical school didn’t give us much, but maybe we can get something more from her", Kat continued as they stepped inside the school building.
They paused outside the office and Amy checked her watch again, wondering how long they had before they had to get back to class.
"We have to get the others", she said finally.
They scanned the crowd coming through the doors, looking for the boys.
Amy nervously checked her watch again.
"We don't have much time", she told Kat. "I'll get Miss Dahlia, you find the boys and meet us outside the staff room."
Kat agreed and walked into the crowd, while Amy hurried to the staff room where she knew she could find the teachers.
She pasted a polite smile on her face as she greeted all the elementary school teachers, and finally managed to get to Miss Dahlia.
"Oh! I remember you.", said the teacher. "Amy Turner."
"Yes", smiled Amy. "It's been a long time, hasn't it?"
"Ten years", said Miss Dahlia pleasantly, taking another sip of her tea and making no moves to get up.
"Well actually", said Amy, shooting a quick glance at the door and seeing Kat waiting outside with Chris, Noah and Justin. "We - my friends and I - were hoping to talk to you and -"
Here Amy stumbled, because she wasn't used to making things up on the spot.
Miss Dahlia followed her gaze and saw the students outside the door.
"Why didn't you say so before?", she asked Amy. "We can't talk much now, your teachers will be expecting you back in class pretty soon. Nevertheless, I hope they can spare a moment or two."
She drained the rest of her tea and headed to the door, with Amy following.
She faced the four of them and said, "How are you all? You all look so grown up."
'Ask her!', Amy mouthed from behind Miss Dahlia, and Justin spoke up.
"We're good, Miss Dahlia", he said. "We fain- we're doing a group project about our elementary school class ten years ago, and we wanted to ask you a few things about that."
"What kind of activities we did then, where we went, that sort of thing", Chris added.
Amy gave them a thumbs up from behind.
"So when would be a good time to talk?" asked Justin.
"How about today evening?", suggested Miss Dahlia. "At the deli near the pool?"
"Of course, Miss Dahlia", said Amy, coming to join the rest. "We'll be there."
"See you then", said Miss Dahila and went back inside the staff room.
The second she was out of earshot, Noah started talking.
"Do you really think she's going to believe the group project thing?"
"Doesn't matter", said Chris. "When we go to the deli, we'll tell her the truth."
"She won't believe us", Amy put in.
"Worst case scenario, she doesn't believe us.", said Justin. "So what? Maybe we'll get another lead from her. Doesn't hurt to try."
They reached the stairs and paused for a moment before going their separate ways.
Nobody said it, but for the first time they didn't feel like five strangers forced to work together.
They felt like a team.
"So, see you guys at the deli", said Kat finally, and they all went back to class.
