CHAPTER 20

Justin rushed down the stairs, taking the steps two at a time.

In the five minutes after Uncle Carl had left the room, all of them had decided that Justin should go and talk to him about the building.

His head was still spinning with all the suggestions everyone else had given about how to get information from Uncle Carl without making him too suspicious.

He headed straight to the kitchen and loaded up two plates of chips before going out into the hall where his dad and Uncle Carl were sitting in front of the TV.
All Justin knew was that Uncle Carl was some sort of history professor, but he'd never talked much about his work.
There was no time or need to delicately step around the subject and sneakily get information out of him, so Justin plunged straight to the point.

"Uncle Carl?", he began. "Chris was asking about your work, it's related to post medieval architecture right?"
"Was he?", Uncle Carl turned around to face Justin.

"It's for our history assignment", Justin lied fluently, and mentally congratulated himself for it. "His topic is Local History, and he wanted to ask if you need any permits to visit the sites and take pictures.

That was the story they had come up with, and for five minutes of thinking, it wasn't half bad.

"Which kind sites is he talking about?” he asked.

"I don't really know, but you can help with that sort of thing, right?”

“Not unless I know the site”, said Uncle Carl.

Justin went over to the stairs, the plates of chips still in his hands, and yelled, “Hey Chris, where do you want to go for your history thing?”

“What?”, asked Amy, coming out of the room and leaning over the bannister.
Seeing the plates, she said, “Come up!”

“Stop yelling!”, said Justin’s dad from the hall.

Justin went up and into the room, where the others were waiting with expectant expressions

“So?”, asked Katherine. “What do we do now?”

“Chris has to show Uncle Carl the drawing, and we’re in”, Justin declared.
“We’re going with the history project thing then?”, asked Noah.

Justin nodded. “Whatever address Uncle Carl tells us, we go there as soon as we can.”

After a while, they all headed out, but Chris hung back and showed the sketch to Uncle Carl.

He explained to Chris that the building belonged to an old society that had been around since the foundation of the town, which had many powerful members with a lot of influence in town politics, so some areas of the building had restricted access and even he wasn't allowed to visit them.

They have a museum on the ground floor which houses permanent exhibits of the town history and he would find enough information about his project there.

The address Uncle Carl had given was on the far side of the town, requiring at least an hour's journey near the woods at the other end of Nioli.
The lead was more concrete than anything else they had before and he couldn't wait to tell everyone what he had found out.
