CHAPTER 5

Dusk had settled onto Nioli streaking the rain washed sky dusty orange. Chris and Justin had just completed their swimming practice. The state swimming competitions were drawing closer day by day and the pressure was building onto them. They practiced for three hours everyday even on weekends.

Justin was the captain of the swimming team and the coach had very high expectations from him. So he was working himself and the team extra hard in order to win the competition.

Winning the states would offer the entire team a chance to get a scholarship which would benefit their college applications.

Completing their practice Justin and Chris dressed up and headed out of the school. Feeling hungry they decided to stop by the nearby deli to grab a sandwich.

They sat in a booth in the deli and ordered their food.

"I've been meaning to talk to you about last night", said Chris a little nervously. "Something didn't feel right to me. Why do you think we fainted?"

"I think we were just dehydrated. We had been practicing for three hours that evening, remember? And we didn't even eat anything at the dance. So maybe it was low blood sugar or something."

"But that doesn't explain why there were three other people there with us. Did you know any one of them?", asked Chris, still not satisfied with Justin's theory.

"If I'm not wrong, I think one of them was Amy Turner. I know her because she had interviewed me about our swimming team for the school newspaper. I don't really know her personally, though."

"Who was the brunette then? The one in the red dress? I saw her at the food table earlier, eating tacos. She definitely didn't look like she was dehydrated."

"I have no idea", said Justin, now deep in thought. "If it wasn't dehydration or something, maybe it was a coincidence."

"Maybe", said Chris just when their food arrived and they ate in silence, both still thinking about the dance.

Justin racked his brains to figure out who the third boy was, who had fainted with them.

He had been the first one to leave after they had woken up, so maybe he knew something.

He decided not to stress Chris by telling him this, because he wasn't entirely sure about what happened that night anyway.

He had felt like he had magically gotten better at swimming overnight, and even their coach was impressed at his performance.

He didn't even feel as tired as he usually did after practice, generally he was pretty exhausted after swimming for three hours straight.

He thought that it might be connected to him fainting, but he dismissed that because he thought he was overthinking things.

Just to cool down he ordered a glass of water, and the waitress served it in a cheap plastic glass.

Getting even more stressed because of everything that was happening, the fainting, the state competition and that day's swimming practice, without realizing he squeezed the glass of water.

Before he could realise, the water from his glass shot up like it was coming out of a hose, and hit the ceiling of the booth.

Chris stared at him, startled.

He stood up to leave and asked Justin, "Are you sure you're fine?"

Justin just stared at the glass in his hand and didn't reply.

Without saying anything else, they both paid for the food and left, now even more confused.
