CHAPTER 7
Katherine awoke with a dull pain underlying the numbness in her arms, and enveloped by the stench of antiseptics and cleaners. Even before she opened her eyes she knew that she was not at home. The air in the room was heavy and damp, pressing against her skin like a clammy shroud.
When she decided to open her eyes her vision was sleep-blurred and untrustworthy. All she could see was moving shapes of light and dark, of color and shadow. And nothing made sense.
Her eyes finally adjusted to the surrounding light only to find herself waking up in the sick room of the school. Before she could put together theories of how she came here, she saw four other students lying on the nearby beds. She recognized them in a fraction of a second, they were the same people whom she had seen on the night of the homecoming dance, outside the dance floor.
She started to stress and before she could get out of her bed, a lady came in and stopped her from doing so. She asked Katherine to take some rest and that she needed it. She also assured her to not worry about her assignments. But solving some silly algebra tests was the last thing that Katherine was worried about.
She decides to listen to the lady and sleeps on her bed. She kept looking at the ceiling putting together the puzzle pieces since the homecoming dance. But nothing made sense unless she was stuck in a fictional novel.
She hears rustling of the sheets on the bed next to her. She sees Amy wake up and decides to ask her if she knew anything about what's happening.
Before they both could say anything, the boys woke up. They all look at each other and they all show the same expression; shock.
Katherine decides to address the elephant in the room and asks, "So, did you all have a good sleep?"
As soon as those words come out of her mouth she realizes how stupid they were and decides to shrug it off.
"Does anyone have any idea as to what's happening to us? And why are we all fainting that too together?" Noah asks.
"Nope" all of them replied in unison.
"Would you guys like to talk about it and figure out what's wrong? Because this is definitely not a coincidence." Amy speaks , adjusting her ponytail.
"Sure. But shouldn't we let the doctors decide what's wrong?" Justin replies.
"The doctors can tell us what's wrong with us but they can't tell us why we all fainted together?" Kat speaks.
Chris, who was lost in his own thoughts and surprisingly quiet, speaks up, "Did anything weird happen to either of you after the dance?"
"Well, according to my mother my body was burning hot when I came back home after the dance but, I felt completely normal instead I felt stronger. I felt as if I had retrieved a weird power. It can be this or I'm just working out too much these days." Katherine explains the entire evening to them.
"But you working out can't explain the fever thing." Noah spoke.
"At first I thought as if something was wrong with the food or drinks which caused us to faint. But I asked a few people around and it turns out there was nothing wrong with the food."
"Hmm weird," Justin said.
"Did anything else happen to anyone?" Katherine asked.
"I had an incident yesterday actually. This is going to sound very weird but Chris was there so it is definitely true. I was sitting in a booth in the deli and I suddenly got irritated and stressed due to all that has happened in the past days plus we have our state level competitions next month. That all resulted in a lot of stress. So without knowing I pressed the plastic glass in my hand and the next second, water jolted out of the glass and touched the ceiling." Justin narrated the entire incident.
"The ceilings must be low." Amy said.
"Like seriously haven't you ever visited the deli? Do you not know the booths there? They don't have that low ceiling." Katherine replied to Amy with an irritated look on her face.
Before they all could speak anything else, the lady in white uniform came in and gave them all medicines which made them sleepy.
Katherine again opened her eyes only to find herself in her own bedroom. For a minute she wondered if all that was a dream but she checked the clock and saw that it was 4:30 in the evening. So it definitely wasn't a dream. She remembered that she had missed out on her workout. But she didn't keep stressing on that and instead decided to order a pizza.
She left her room and descended the stairs to the living room. She saw her parents and little sister sitting on the couch.
"What are you doing? The doctors have asked you to take some rest." her mother spoke.
"I'm feeling good now. Also, don't you have to go to Veronica's school to attend the poetry competition?" Katherine asked her parents.
Katherine and Veronica were like the two opposite poles. They had absolutely nothing in common. Katherine liked to attend self defense sessions whilst Veronica wrote poems as she dreamt of becoming a writer one day. But they both still faced the daily sibling rivalry.
Veronica has her entire life planned at the age of ten years. Whereas Katherine hadn't even planned what she was going to do tomorrow.
"Yes we have to go but we don't have to leave until the next hour or so." Kat's father said.
"Ok"
Before Katherine could ask anything else, her phone rang. It was an unknown number so she decided to ignore it thinking they must've called it by mistake.
The same number flashed on her mobile screen again. And this time, Katherine answered it.
"Hello, who is it?" Katherine spoke in an irritated voice.
"It's Amy"
"What do you want? Why'd you call me?"
"I'd called the others too so don't feel special. We have decided to meet at the deli tomorrow at 6:00 pm to discuss stuff."
"I'll be there."
Before Amy could say anything else Katherine hung up the phone. And ordered a pizza while her parents got ready.
