CHAPTER 9

Amy opens the wooden door to the house and goes in shock seeing the entire view in front of her. This is the first time she is ever invited to a party. She has zero experience as to what she is expected to do. She immediately starts regretting her decision to come to this party.

The messy room has empty bottles laid on the ground, waiting for someone to trip over them. Amy is almost a victim. Amy starts to analyse the party, for her the people in the crowded area, look and remind her of beer bottles: empty and useless. As she steps over the god-awful mess, she notices the music playing in the background. It is definitely not her type of music.

Mostly everyone is drunk or tipsy, with a few people in clusters sitting around outside either making out, dancing somewhere, drinking or just talking. Amy locates the occasional drunk person stumbling around somewhere. Her immediate thought is; having that many drunken people can destroy a house or even a building.

She tries to find Chris but she fails to do so. She just goes and sits in a less crowded corner in the room.

Free endless drinks everywhere. Sometimes you’ll find them on the floor or when you first step out of the car there’s normally beer bottles strewn about on the lawn. There is really loud thumping music, usually the popular stuff of the time mixed with some old classics.

At any party at any given time there is a game of spades or beer pong going on depending on the crowd and what they’re into.

This would’ve been a normal Friday night for most of them if they weren’t fighting against the universe.

Katherine enters the room wearing a black jeans with a crop top and a leather jacket. As soon as she enters the room she sees Amy and decides to go talk to her as she doesn't have much of an option. She regrets wearing the leather jacket the minute she steps in. The atmosphere is hot, sticky and too humid.

“Hi. Where are the others?” Katherine asks Amy, tapping on her back.

“I can’t find anyone.”

“Well you will never be able to find anyone by sitting in a corner across the room biting your nails.”

Amy rolls her eyes and says, “Fine. Let’s go find the boys.”

They get up and start their search. They go in opposite directions.

Katherine had been to a few parties in high school. She only hated one thing about such parties; the social butterflies trying to flirt with anyone and everyone

According to her, the night was alive. The air was so thick with lights and smoke. She liked the adrenaline that the roar of the crowd and music that thrummed straight through the bodies surrounding her and into her eardrums gave her.

Sweat flicked up into the air with the start of every dance move, and wet hair bounced back down with its completion. It would have been perfect- if not for one thing. A drunk guy unnoticeably starts forcing Kat into movements this way and that.

Frustrated by him, her voice pushes out into his ear, low but firm, “In the middle of the party bitch get off of me.”

The guy looked at her and without saying anything else he left. Katherine spotted Chris in the corner of the room talking with a girl; the type of girls she hated. She didn’t like that. She stormed across the room and stood behind the girl. No one noticed her presence.

Katherine pushes her voice in her ear  in a slow yet sharp voice she muttered,
“Boo.”

The girl startled and jumped into Chris’s arms. Looking at her Katherine couldn’t control her laughter. Chris gave Katherine a ..... look.

He asked the girl to go and turned to Katherine. “What the hell was that?”

“Nothing. I thought you’d invited us to talk about things but it seems like you’re busy doing other things. If you’re not interested you can tell me I won’t bother you henceforth.”

“Why do you always have to be so mean?”

“Well why not? Better than being a flirt. Now come with me, the others are waiting for you.”

They both went in search of the other until Chris spotted Amy, Justin and Noah talking in the kitchen.

He gripped Katherine’s hand and pulled her towards the kitchen. Katherine notices a cold grip on her wrist. She decides not to say anything to Chris and ignores the moment.

They reach the kitchen and finally all of them find each other. Chris says, “Let's go to the backyard, there's some chairs there so we can sit and talk.”

They all nod their heads and start moving towards the back. Katherine mumbles into Chris’s ears, “You can leave my hand now, I know where the backyard is.”

“Sorry. I forgot.” Chris speaks in embarrassment.

They all reach the lawn and sit down on the placed chairs.
“Your house is amazing. Never visited such a big house.” Noah says pointing towards Chris.

“Thank-“ Before Chris can even complete his sentence all of them hear a loud thud from inside the house. The music stops, there’s complete silence.

A random guy comes out and tells Chris that someone broke his speakers. Chris storms inside the house and disappears.

The others look at each other confused.
“Oh come on! Why are you crying?” Katherine asks Amy.

“Nothing. I just got scared.”

“Well did you break the speakers?”

“No!”

“Then for god's sake, stop crying!”

Chris comes out of the house with another guy. He pushes the guy down the stairs and starts to scream at him. “Did you know how much the speakers were worth?”

“No you moron.” The other guy speaks and stands up on his feet ready to fight Chris.

Chris, who was already burning with anger, charges towards the guys and knocks him off the ground. He curls his hands into a fist and aims for the front of the guy’s nose. Chris’s fist hits the bridge of the guy’s nose and a little bit of blood splatters on the green grass.

Before he could go for another hit, Justin comes and pulls him up. Chris screams at the guy and tries to charge towards him.

Before anyone can do anything else, the sky turns as dark as the devil’s soul. The sky feels as if it could collapse on anyone anytime. There is complete silence. Suddenly there is an explosion like a sonic boom. Everyone fears for their safety and runs inside the house. Only the five of them stand outside. None of them are scared by this, they feel as if it can’t harm them at all.

They all hear a clanking sound from the sky. It is as if an anvil was being dragged across the vault of the sky against its will.

Everyone shuts their ears except for Chris. He doesn’t feel a thing.

The lightning hits the head of a shaggy tree nearby causing the entire tree to catch fire, shocking everyone to their core.

Noah rushes in the house and calls the fire department.

Everyone gathers their stuff and leaves the house by the time the firemen arrive.

After two hours the fire is stopped and thankfully no damage is done to the building or any of the students.

The four of them remaining help Chris clean the house. No one speaks a word the entire time. They all leave the house one by one.

“It wasn’t your fault, you know. So stop thinking about it and go get some sleep. Good night.” Katherine says to Chris and leaves his house, closing the door.
