So, the Israelites are God's chosen people; His holy ones. Or they're supposed to. But they fail. Time and time again. Ezekiel 16 serves as sharp imagery of just how badly, and the profoundness of it all is breathtaking and demands more than one view.

So, as a bit of a preview, God says some pretty harsh insults to His people- more on why in the next chapter- and when God is insulting you... that's pretty bad. It should be a warning bell, for sure. So let's take a look at some of them...

"the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed of your lewd behavior" (Ezekiel 16: 27b)- whoa, you know you're bad when even the pagans whose name is synonymous with hating art are disgusted with you!

"Yet you were not like a prostitute, because you scorned payment... No one solicited you to play the whore; and you gave payment, while no payment was given to you; therefore you were different" (Ezekiel 16 31b; 34)- and now God is calling them out for being even worse than a prostitute! 

  "As I live, declares the Lord God, your sister Sodom and her daughters have not done as you and your daughters have done" (Ezekiel 16: 48)- remember Sodom? Like Sodom and Gomorrah? They kind of got destroyed for their wickedness. Fire actually rained down from heaven on them because God had had enough. And Israel has surpassed them!
