02. WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR

Gilbert Blythe sighed as he walked up to Avonlea School, preparing himself for another repetitive day, the same one he had everyday at that dreary school.

It had been a year since the death of his father and he had left to work at the docks, where he had unfortunately fallen ill and was forced to return home, where he decided to stay.

Avonlea hadn't changed since he left, neither had he. Much.

His feeling for a certain redhead named Anne Shirley had certainly changed. He had realised that what he felt towards the girl was merely an infatuation and held no real feelings to her whatsoever, which was strange. For him, anyway.

Gilbert opened the door and set his stuff down before walking over to his group of friends. He and Billy had a silent agreement that they would try not to argue, even if they didn't like each other. Which they didn't.

"Gilbert!" The boys all cried as he neared them, making several heads turn their way, namely the Baudelaires, who were confused as to why this boy was such a big deal.

"That's Gilbert Blythe," Isadora informed them, "He's rather popular around here," She said.

"He's an orphan too," Duncan added, "But everyone seems to forget about that because they like him," He rolled his eyes.

The sound of the children's chattering was stopped immediately when Ms. Caliban - Avonlea school's new teacher - entered the room and everyone clambered into their seats - Violet tentatively sitting next to Isadora and Klaus doing the same beside Duncan.

"Now children, before we start, we have two new students who will be joining us today, if they would like to come up, that would be lovely," The woman smiled.

All eyes seemed to snap towards them and Violet and Klaus shared looks across the classroom before they both slowly stood up and walked towards the front.

"Cake-sniffers," Carmelita sang as they passed her and moved towards the front of the class, next to Ms. Caliban, who glared at the girl, as a small amount of laughter was scattered around the room.

"Class this is Violet and Klaus Baudelaire," Ms. Caliban introduced as the siblings stood awkwardly either side of them, "They are  Dr. Montgomery's new adopted children," She smiled.

"Aw, Cake-sniffers living with another Cake-sniffer, how sweet," Carmelita mockingly whispered to Josie Pye, hoping not to be heard by her teacher.

"Carmelita!" Ms. Caliban snapped - making said girl awkwardly look away, sheepish almost, causing everyone to smile slightly to themselves in amusement.

Gilbert couldn't help but watch as the brunette girl slid back into her seat, keeping her head down before glancing across the room and their eyes locked, blue meeting hazel before they both hastily looked away and averted their attention to the front of the class where their teacher stood.

The day seemed long and consisted mainly of long division, but it was finally time for lunch and Violet and Klaus wandered outside where all the children were sitting in their set cliques and the two looked very out of place standing by the entrance of the school.

The phrase out of place here means someone out of or is out of place, they feel uncomfortable in a particular situation or place, or they do not belong there for example, neither Klaus or Violet were in these set cliques, so it made them look very awkward, a word which here means uncomfortable or out of place.

"Violet! Klaus!" Isadora called, beckoning them over to a patch of grass where both she and Duncan were sitting and the siblings complied, smiling.

"Why do you only have one lunch basket?" Duncan asked the two, who smiled at each other.

"Watch," Violet ordered before pushing a small switch on the side of the basket, making two metal arms come out of the top of the basket, stopping in front of the Baudelaires with sandwiches on the end of each arms and the eldest Baudelaire smiled in triumph.

"It worked," Violet breathed out, astonished at her work.

"I told you," Klaus nudged her as a sheepish smile played on the girl's lips.

"That was..." Isadora breathed out, trying to find the right words.

"Intriguing?" Klaus offered and Isadora nodded.

"Yes, intriguing," She said.

On the other side of the grass, Anne Shirley watched, fascinated by the contraption the Baudelaires and Quagmires were working on.

"Anne?" Diana Barry asked, trying to grab the girl's attention.

Anne turned her head into the direction of her friend, showing she was listening.

"What are you looking at?" Diana asked and the rest of their little group joined in on the two's conversation - bringing their own to a halt.

"That," Anne pointed to the four huddled in the corner of the schoolyard.

Carmelita and Josie scoffed in disgust at the sight of four Cake-sniffers conversing with each other.

"What is that?" Ruby asked, also intrigued by the invention.

"I don't know," Anne said, shaking her head slightly, "But it's absolutely captivating," She breathed out.

"Thank you for sticking up for us today," Violet said to the Quagmires on behalf of her and her brother as the four packed up the basket.

"It was no problem," Duncan waved off, "Carmelita deserves to be brought down a peg or two," He smiled.

"I wholeheartedly agree," Violet smiled.

"I'm sure you already know," Duncan said to the two.

"What?" Violet asked, confused.

"What friends are for," Duncan replied.
