03. GREEN GABLES

"I have a request of you three," Dr. Montgomery said as they sat around the dining room.

It was the weekend and the Baudelaires were more than ecstatic to have some time off school to spend some time on inventing, reading and biting.

"And what would that be, Uncle Monty," Violet asked.

"Green Gables is the place where I get most of my eggs from and, as of this morning, we are in need of some," Monty explained, "I need you to go up there and fetch some for me. Now, the Cuthberts have a daughter around your age, Anne, she's an orphan too, maybe you could get to know her a bit while you're there,"  He smiled and the Baudelaires smiled back.

"We would be more than happy to collect the eggs for you, Uncle Monty," Klaus told him.

Breakfast was cleaned up and the siblings all packed up and began their trek to Green Gables.

The walk was a peaceful one, it mainly consisted of Sunny pointing out all the squirrels they passed.

"We're nearly out of the woods," Violet smiled as they exited the path of trees and onto the property of Green Gables.

The three trekked up to the front door of the Cuthbert's house and Klaus tentatively knocked.

The door swung open, revealing an elderly woman with her hair tied up in a tight bun.

"May I help you?" The woman asked.

"Hello, I'm Violet Baudelaire and these are my siblings Klaus and Sunny," Violet introduced, "We're here on behalf of Dr. Montgomery," She explained.

"Ah right," The woman said, disappearing into the house for a second and then reappearing, empty handed, "We don't have any here right now, but Anne - who is just down there - is collecting some now, so you could go get some from her," The woman said, pointing to an area somewhere down the farm.

"Thank you, Mrs..." Klaus trailed off, unsure of her name.

"Ms. Cuthbert," The woman told him and the children nodded before walking away from the door and to the direction Ms. Cuthbert had pointed them to.

The two came across a barn looking building to see two figures conversing at the top and saw a ladder to get up there.

Violet sighed as she looked at her brother, gesturing to the baby in her arms and Klaus nodded.

"I'll get them, you take Sunny home," He smiled kindly and Violet nodded before leaving the premises.

Klaus took a deep breath before slowly walking into the building and looking up at the ladder. The boy wrapped his fingers around the first step on the wooden ladder and to the top floor.

"Hello!" Klaus said and two people turned around. One was a dark haired boy and the other was a redheaded girl.

Klaus took a deep breath looking at them.

"Um, I need some eggs," He gingerly said.

"Who are you?" The redhead - who Klaus assumed was Anne - asked.

"I'm Klaus Baudelaire, I moved here a week ago and I'm here to collect some eggs on behalf of Dr. Montgomery Montgomery," Klaus replied.

"Montgomery Montgomery?" The dark haired boy - Jerry - asked in his French accent.

"He lives on Lousy Lane, doesn't he?" Anne asked and Klaus nodded, "He's a rather enthralling man," She smiled and Klaus nodded again, smiling back.

"Enthralling?" Jerry once again spoke up, confused once again.

"Enthralling means charming or bewitching," Klaus explained, "But in this case, I think she means that Dr. Montgomery is fascinating and hold's someone's attention," He said.

Anne smiled at him, glad that someone finally understood her way of speaking.

"Um...eggs! You need eggs!" Anne suddenly realised and climbed down the ladder, Klaus gingerly following her to the hen house.
