04. GILBERT BLYTHE
Violet let out a sigh as she shifted Sunny in her arms and continued her way down the path through the woods back to her Uncle's house when Sunny spoke up.
"Glab-doo?" The baby said, which loosely translates to, "Can we get some rocks to skim on the lake?"
Violet looked at her sister oddly, especially since that was what they were doing the day that Mr. Poe told them that their parents had perished in a terrible fire. And that perished meant killed.
"Um, sure," Violet shrugged, setting Sunny down on a log and kneeling down in front of her, "How about this one?" She asked, reaching over and grabbing a rock to show to her sister.
"Ganfla?" Sunny asked, which meant, "Do you have anything that's not sandstone?"
Hearing her sister say this made Violet sigh slightly, as this was something Sunny said the day Mr. Poe came up to them at the beach and the memories of that day just seemed to come flooding back to her.
"Okay then, how about this one?" Violet asked, putting down the rock and holding up another one.
"Yeah, that'll do," Sunny gargled and Violet nodded, handing it to her.
Violet watched, a smile playing on her lips, as Sunny bit the stone in a perfect shape for skimming.
"Thank you Sunny," The eldest Baudelaire smiled as she took the perfectly shaped rock from her sister.
"Well, well, well, look what we have here," A voice drawled out and Violet stood up, turning around to come face-to-face with Billy Andrews, "Hey there orphan, what's your sister doing?" He asked.
"Nothing that concerns you," Violet nonchalantly said, trying to stay calm as she picked Sunny up and tried to walk past him and his friends - who were blocking her way, "Excuse me," She said, trying to get past them.
"What was that the other day on the school yard?" Billy asked and Violet just answered by pushing past the boys and continued walking down the path, clutching Sunny close to her, "Hey, orphan! I was talking to you!" Billy cried, grabbing the Baudelaire roughly by the shoulders and pulling her to face him, making the rock in Violet's hand go cascading to the ground.
"Hey, Billy! What's going on?" A voice called and everyone's heads turned towards it.
Gilbert Blythe stood there in all his glory, looking at the situation questioningly, particularly the Baudelaire sisters.
"Gilbert," Billy dryly cried, "What are you doing here?" He asked.
"I was just having a walk through the woods, you know, enjoying the weekend, when I heard some yelling, so I came over here to check it out," Gilbert said as he slowly walked over to them, "So, what's going on?" He asked.
"Nothing," Billy quickly answered, "We were just leaving," He said as he and his goons quickly walked away.
"Are you alright, Miss?" Gilbert asked Violet, who looked at him and nodded.
"Thank you," The brunette said.
"Um, is this yours?" Gilbert asked, bending down and picking up Sunny's rock and holding it out to the youngest Baudelaire, smiling gently at her.
"Ghsdra," Sunny said, which Violet understood as, "Suck up,"
"What my sister means to say, is thank you," Violet told him and Gilbert nodded as the girl smiled and turned to walk away again.
"You're Violet, right?" The boy called after her, making her stop in her tracks and face him.
"Yes," Violet said, slowly walking forwards, "And you are...?" She trailed off.
"Gilbert, Gilbert Blythe," He told her.
"Well, it's nice to meet you Gilbert, Gilbert Blythe," Violet smiled, a little teasingly, as she held out her hand for him to shake.
"And, it's a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Violet, Violet Baudelaire," Gilbert smiled, shaking her hand.
Violet smiled at him one last time and left with a small nod, on her way back to Uncle Monty's house.
