09. STEPHANO

The ringing of the doorbell echoed through Dr. Montgomery's house, making Violet, Klaus and Sunny's heads snap up as they sat in the Reptile Room and after Violet picked up the youngest Baudelaire, both Violet and Klaus slowly walked to the front door and Violet heaved it open to reveal their worst nightmare. The thing they had escaped from two weeks ago. What they feared the most.

"Good morning. I am Stephano, Dr. Montgomery Montgomery's new assistant,"

Count Olaf stood there in all his glory, a heavy accent playing in his voice.

"It's afternoon. And you're Count Olaf," Klaus told him, narrowing his eyes.

"Perhaps one of you can take my suitcases up to my room. The ride along that smelly road was dull and unpleasant, and Stephano is very tired," Count Olaf said, keeping up his rather strange accent.

The word strange means difficult to understand or explain, unusual and surprising, a word which here means difficult to understand or explain.

"You're Count Olaf, and if anyone ever deserved to travel along Lousy Lane, it's you," Violet spat, glaring at the man.

"We will not help you with your luggage and we will not let you in this house," Klaus exclaimed, reaching over to shut the door, only for it to be stopped by a knife belonging to Count Olaf.

"Well, I see you children haven't changed a bit," Count Olaf said, in his normal voice after he took the knife out of the door and menacingly walked towards them after he entered the house, closing the door, "Violet, you're obviously as stubborn as ever. Klaus, you're still wearing those idiotic glasses from reading too many books. And I can see little Sunny here still has nine toes instead of ten," He listed off.

"Uh-Oh," Sunny said as Count Olaf made them back up the stairs, pointing his knife at them forbiddingly.

"What are you talking about? My sister has ten toes, like the vast majority of people," Klaus said, eyebrows creased.

"Really? That's odd. I could have sworn that she lost one of her toes in an accident. I seem to recall a man named Stephano being so confused by being called Count Olaf that he accidentally dropped his knife on one of her little feet and severed one of her toes," Olaf threatened.

"You wouldn't dare," Violet glared at the man.

"Let's not discuss what I would or would not dare do," Count Olaf said, "Instead, let's discuss your poor, unfortunate parents," The man chuckled, using his knife to tap on a picture of a piano that held secrets only Dr. Montgomery and the three Baudelaires knew, "Your father and mother were very brave in their days. But," The deeply disturbed man made a small explosion sound, "Their days are done, Baudelaires,"

"That is not a photo of our parents," Klaus told him.

Olaf looked at the picture, "Yes, it is. They're inside the piano.

"How do you know that?" Klaus asked, his mouth going dry.

"I took the picture," Count Olaf said, causing the Baudelaires to look at each other, shocked, "And now, all that's left of them is their enormous fortune, and that enormous fortune is mine," Olaf chuckled, stepping closer and closer to them, forcing the children to back up for they all came to a stop in front of the screeching iguana clock and a feeling arose in Violet. Not only fear, but longing. Longing for something else to be there with them, to protect her. Someone.

"Never," Klaus told him.

"Never is a very long time. And your ridiculous uncle will be back in a few seconds -" Olaf was cut off as the screeching iguana clock struck 10 am and the fake iguana shot out of the screeching iguana clock, separating the children and the psychopath, giving the Baudelaires the chance to run as Count Olaf was distracted by screaming and gasping.

"Go!" Klaus shouted as the man grabbed his arm, stopping him from getting away and the half of the spyglass he found in the ruins of him and his sister's home fall out of his pocket and making it go cascading down the stairs, "Run!" Klaus prompted, grunting as he and his sister sprinted down the stairs and into the Reptile Room, shutting the door tight as Count Olaf threw his knife at them, making it impale the door.

The Baudelaires panted heavily as they slowly backed away from the door.

"He found us, how did he find us?" Klaus asked, pacing back and forth.

"That the wrong question," Violet told her brother, "The real question is, what do we do next?"
