12. A SMILE IS A SINISTER THING
In the sinister shadows of a sinister wooden area stood an equally sinister figure.
The word sinister here means something harmful or evil.
In this case, everything about Count Olaf spelt sinister as he stood there in the darkness, spyglass in hand, his pale eye fixed on the pleasant sight that was Violet and Gilbert. His gaze fell upon their interlocked hands, his lips twisting into a wicked smile.

Violet and Gilbert sat there, hands intertwined, for what seemed like hours - which in reality was more like five minutes - when the sounds of leaves crunching was heard behind them, signalling that someone was approaching the two, making them turn their heads.
"Ah, Violet, there you are," Dr. Montgomery said as he reached the two, producing a thick cloud of smoke from his rather large pipe, his eyes landing on the dark haired boy next to her, "And Gilbert," His dark brown orbs then rested on the pair's hands, "Lovely to see you," Uncle Monty greeted the boy.
"It's lovely to see you too, Sir," Gilbert greeted back.
"Um, Violet, I need your help, Raymond Ditmars needs to go home, and I would appreciate it if you would accompany me, "Uncle Monty explained, gesturing to the lizard that stood by his feet, "I would ask Klaus, but he seems to be preoccupied with Isadora Quagmire at this moment in time," The man chuckled.
"Oh, of course," Violet answered, gently removing her hand from Gilbert's, sending him a small smile, receiving one back as she stood up and walked over to her guardian before turning back to Gilbert, "I'll see you at school, Gilbert," She smiled.
"Yes, farewell, Gilbert," Monty said rather quickly, ushering Violet away.
"Farewell," The boy nodded, a bemused smile playing on his lips as he watched the girl, her carer and the reptile walk away.
