19. THE AFTERMATH

"You ready?" Gilbert asked as he came intothe kitchen, where Violet was putting her books into her basket.

"Coming," The girl answered before the two exited the house, Gilbert closing the door behind them.

It had been two days since the fire and both Violet and Klaus had been procrastinating going back to school and it was both their first day back.

"Are - Are you going to be okay today?" Gilbert asked her as they started walking down the path in the woods.

"I think I'll be fine," Violet smiled softly up at him.

"If anyone gives you any trouble today, promise you'll come find me, okay?" The dark haired boy told her.

"I will," Violet nodded, interlocking their hands, "I promise,"

"Come on, Klaus!" Anne called to the middle Baudelaire boy as she ran out of the Cuthbert house at Green Gables, passing Jerry on the way, "Bye Jerry!" The ginger cried as she passed him, Klaus trailing behind.

"See you later, Jerry," Klaus smiled and the boy in question laughed.

"Good luck!" He waved after them, smiling.

"Anne, you're going to have to slow down," Klaus told her.

"Oh, sorry, it's just the thrilling idea of both you and Violet coming back to school after the calamitous incident," She smiled up at him after slowing down as they walked side by side at a slow pace.

"I'm not so sure it's an exciting thing to come back to school after a tragic incident," He told Anne - who shrugged as they came across the fork in the path where the ginger would meet Diana every morning before school.

"Anne! Klaus!" The Barry girl called, running up to them, hugging the girl and smiling at Klaus before the three of them made there way to the schoolhouse.

The day had gone by rather uneventfully - which as odd for the Baudelaires - and apart from the occasional comment form Carmelita, Violet and Klaus had had an okay day and were just glad to be sitting in the schoolyard with Duncan and Isadora.

"And Granny said you can visit the reptiles any time you'd like," Isadora smiled at the two, who seemed to be spacing out.

"Violet? Klaus?" Duncan asked, waving his hand in front of the two's face, shaking the out of whatever trance they were in.

"Sorry," They both apologised.

"Are you two okay?" Isadora asked them, "You keep spacing out," She said.

"Yes, it's just," Klaus began, looking at his sister.

"We need your help," The eldest Baudelaire said.

"With what?" Duncan asked, eyebrows creased, making Violet sigh.

"With this," She said, opening her basket and pouring out some objects.

More specifically, a strange contraption which looked like two syringes welded together, an empty wine bottle, the leg of a doll, a razor, several wigs and two needles.
