harry survived voldemort's killing curse because lily sacrificed herself with true love, right? but surely lily couldn't have been the first mother ever in history to sacrifice herself for her child.

now, backtracking a little bit, we all know that magical oaths are binding, and breaking one could lead to death and being stripped of your magic. keep this in mind, it's important.

when snape figured out that lily's son was the one that voldemort was after, he begged voldemort to spare lily's life. voldemort may have actually agreed to spare her, and promised (made a magical oath) to do so.

but what evidence do we have that voldemort made the oath?

think back to october 31st, in godric's hollow. voldemort breaks into the potter's house. he kills james immediately, without second thought. he then finds lily, guarding harry. he tells lily to "stand aside." we know he wasn't just being merciful, as shown with james' murder. it's almost like he wasn't intending on killing her; he wanted to keep his promise.

of course, he eventually did kill lily. he has broken his oath with snape. therefore, the next time he tried to do magic, it would backfire. it would snap back and strip him of his life.

so, voldemort is now face to face with baby harry. he casts avada kedavra.

he isn't exactly dead, but he's been stripped of his power, leaving him in a small, weak form. he would have died if it were not for the horcruxes saving pieces of his soul, but oh well.
