Alone with Everybody Part One
The couple has ventured on the road for a few days, leaving Klaus antsy due to them being in the contryside. Lizzie walked out of the gas station with a bag full of supplies to find Klaus waiting for her outside their SUV. She pulls a black and white trucker cap that reads, 'Mother Trucker' on it and waves it at Klaus, who immediately objects to it "Absolutely not!"
Lizzie was wearing a top with a pant and some boots.
"We need to blend in! You could start by losing the thousand-dollar jacket." Lizzie said, gesturing to his coat.
Klaus sighs petulantly and makes a face at the heretic who only smiled at him teasingly "Tell me again why we're on a scenic tour of Methamphetamine Country, and not compelling a jet to some far-off...preferably tropical... destination? "
"Look, I'm not the one with an army of pissed-off vampires coming after me. Can I have the keys?" Lizzie said as she holds her for the keys. The hybrid sighs dramatically once again before he pulls the keys out of his pocket and reluctantly slams them into Kiara's open hand.
"On a scale from one to ten, exactly how much am I going to despise this little plan of yours?" Klaus asked as he squints his eyes at the woman and she thinks for a moment while making a face.
"Considering I've learned from the best, you know, Hayley who you adore so much. I would say... a solid eighty-five." Lizzie emphasizes sarcastically and Klaus gives her an annoyed look.
She gives him a mocking smile and slaps the trucker cap on Klaus' head as well as placing a sweet kiss on his cheek. He rolled his eyes as his cheeks begin to heat up from him blushing and Lizzie turns back to the car, though he doesn't take the hat off.
"Oh, good..." Klaus said.
Once they're both inside, Klaus gives her the same look of annoyance, like he did before, and Lizzie winks at him before putting the car in drive.
Klaus, who is still wearing the trucker cap Lizzie got him, walks into a homey-looking bar that is blaring country music inside with Lizzie while Hope and Theo were holding their parents hands. Klaus doesn't seem pleased as they walk toward the bar, where a bartender is cleaning glasses in the back.
"Well, I can see why you wanted to come here. I feel safer already." Klaus says in a sarcastic tone and Lizzie rolled her eyes. The bartender, a grouchy-looking, middle-aged man, gives them both a look and said "We're closed."
"You don't look closed." Klaus stated, glaring at the bartender, but he keeps his cold stare on the hybrid.
"We are for you." The bartender said.
"Well, perhaps you failed to notice the hat?" Klaus says.
"I'll take a glass of water and bourbon for rich boy."Lizzie spoke, nodding towards Klaus and he chuckled at her nickname for him.
She then added "Unless Hollis is still serving that moonshine of his?"
Just then, Hollis, a middle aged black man, walks out into the bar from the back room, looking pleased to see Lizzie.
"Well, I'll be damned! I got this. " Hollis greeted patting the bartender on the shoulder.
He then said Lizzie "It's been a long time since you danced on my bar, Lizzie Parker."
"It's been a long time since I danced on any bar. I get in a different kind of trouble these days." Lizzie chuckled as Hollis holds out his hand, and Lola takes it, smacking it affectionately as Klaus sighs and rolls his eyes in annoyance.
The two chuckle for a moment before Lizzie begins to introduce him to the others. Hope and Theo were hiding behind their mother was Lizzie chuckled before she said to the man "Hollis, meet Hope and Theo."
"Oh, look at the pretty girl and pretty boy! Ah, city boy, huh? Wouldn't have guessed that." Hollis smiled wide and glanced to his side to see Klaus sitting there watching.
Klaus sits down on one of the bar stools and responds in a mocking tone "Never underestimate the allure of indoor plumbing."
"Hollis, this is Klaus. My husband and Hope and Theo's father. We just... need a place to lay low." Lizzie introduced Klaus to Hollis noticing the look of confusion on his face.
Hollis doesn't seem too pleased by this request, but when he sighs, he smiles at her anyway "You picked a pretty rough time for us around here. A lot of folks are giving up on the pack altogether."
Lizzie gives him a concerned look, and he nervously rubs his face with his hand before he continues "But for the girl who saved my daughter Tanya? I just wish there were a few more people to give you a proper homecoming."
He then said to the couple "Hey, you guys settle in. I'll pour the moonshine. Baby drinks for free."
Hollis pulls out mason jars for the couple and pours monshine from a larger mason jar into one of the glasses. Klaus seems extremely uncomfortable by the deep-country atmosphere and Lizzie places a hand on his that rested on his knee. The hybrid looks at their hands and slightly smile although it doesn't fully cure his uncomfortable body.
The two remain sitting at the bar, Klaus drinking his bourbon since he didn't want the moonshine and Kiara drinking her tap water. She rests her cheek against her palm as she listened to the hybrid continued to complain about their current hideout.
"I'm quite sure this glass hasn't been washed in the past decade, which makes it the cleanest thing in this establishment."Klaus said, rolling his eyes.
"And you have hit your complaint quota for the day. Congrats. You are officially the worst."Lizzie fake cheer.
" I seem to remember you knocking on my door to join this little road trip. I'm just surprised Faye didn't want to join to escape another day giving Elijah the mournful doe-eyes?" Klaus smiled.
"Hayley is due to give birth soon. Faye want to be there for her. Besides it's none of our business." Lizzie scoffed.
"Right. It's only your the badass vampire and my brother in our city!" Klaus said.
Hollis walked up to them with an anxious and disturbed look on his face as he said "Lizzie? If you're trying to be discreet... Start by turning down the volume on the lover's spat."
Lizzie immediately notices his concern and becomes concerned herself.
"Is everything okay?"Lizzie asked.
"Someone tried to rob the Gas 'n' Save down by the highway. Kayla was there. I heard it went back for the bad guy." Hollis explained and the name ringing a bell in Kiara's mind.
"Kayla McInnis?"Lizzie asked and she seemed shocked.
"Her first." Hollis says, nodding.
"Wait, isn't she like, nine years old, according to Hayley?" Lizzie asked.
"Fifteen." Hollis corrected her.
Klaus looks confused, since he has no idea who they're talking about, so Lizzie elaborates for his and the audience's benefit.
"A girl Hayley used to babysit for. She told me the girl was just a little girl who played with dolls. Now, she's killed someone and triggered the wolf curse. Where is she?"Lizzie sighed and taps her fingers on the counter.
"The cops let her go home. Little trailer down by the creek." Hollis replied sadly and walked away. The heretic immediately gets up to leave, causing Klaus makes a face and grab her by the arm.
"Where do you think you're going?" Klaus asked.
"Nik, I remember when Hayley told me when she triggered my curse. Now, Kayla is going through the same thing."Lizzie muttered.
"And that's your problem how?" Klaus growled.
"The one person that could help her isn't even here. If she ever needed someone to talk to, it's now and I can be someone for her." Lizzie tried to explain to him but he doesn't agree to it.
"In case you've forgotten, we're supposed to be keeping a low profile. It's hardly the time to go play youth counselor to a bunch of misguided wolves." Klaus sighed.
" It's just down the road! I hardly..."Lizzie started.
"In fact, I think this little experiment is over. I hope you enjoyed your trip down Memory Lane. But my life.... our children's lives takes precedence. A fact you've clearly failed to grasp. From now on, we do things my way." Klaus cut her off and stands up from his seat and prepare to carry the children in their car seats.
The hybrid finished putting the kids into the backseat of the SUV. He softly smiled at the Hope and Theo and gently rubs his thumb over Hope's cheek.
"Always a good girl, good boy. Let's get out of here, shall we?" Klaus said.
Unfortunately for him, when he turns to get into the driver seat, Lizzie was standing in front of him with an unamused expression.
"There is a scared kid out there, and I can't just turn my back on her."Lizzie spoke as she crosses her arms and stares at him.
Klaus clenches his jaw, saying "And, tragic as that may be, it's not my problem. Neither is it yours. Get in the car. We're leaving."
"We're not going anywhere." Lizzie said, shaking her head.
"And I suppose you're going to stop me? Perhaps you'll get Cletus and your other foul-smelling friends to help?" Klaus taunted leaning down at her.
"Those friends of mine are helping us, Nik... no questions asked despite the fact they have problems of their own. And all you've done is insult them. You don't get it, do you? This is the exact reason why we're here. Maybe if you hadn't been a dick to, I don't know, everybody, then we wouldn't even be on the run. " Lizzie said, frustrated and she push back angrily.
"I have always done what I needed to do to protect our family from numerous enemies. I make no apologies for my methods." Klaus told her as he stepped forward opening the driver's door.
Lizzie scoffs in frustration and annoyance "Do you even hear yourself, Nik? You're incapable of even pretending to be a good person. And you can justify it all you want with strategy, and 'us versus them,' but at the end of the day, the enemies that you have are the ones that you made."
Klaus clearly knows that Lizzie is right, but is loathe to admit it, so he continues to glare at her as she continued to talk some sense into him.
"Is that what you want for our children? Is that how you want them to see the world? I'm not just gonna stand back and let you raise them to be just like you, Nik."Lizzie asked as Klaus softened at the mention of their children and Lola sighed.
"If it's your impulse to trust in the kindness of those outside the family, all the more reason you need my protection."Klaus taunted.
Lizzie growled furiously "I am gonna go speak to that girl, because she needs my help. You're gonna stay here and shut up. I've earned at least that."
"Elizabeth, listen to me..." Klaus tried.
Lizzie, at her limit where this argument is concerned, opens up the car door so that Klaus can see Hope and Theo, who are watching them argue. The hybrid looks at the children faces as they have no idea what they're yelling about.
" There is a very good chance that one day, our daughter and son will be dealing with the same thing that Kayla is dealing with. And, if that day comes, I hope that someone makes it their business to help them, too." Lizzie stated as she glances at her children and sadly smiled at them.
Klaus finally starts to understand where Lizzie is coming from, and remains silent as she turns to leave to find Kayla. Before she does, though, she squeezes his arm affectionately and whispers to him "Being kind doesn't make you weak, Nik."
She leans her forehead against his for a moment before pulling away and leaving him to process what has happened.
