4. The apple orchard

The smell of freshly baked cookies and muffins filled the air, chatting of many costumers was sounded throughout the bakery, and every so often I could hear the 'Ding' of the cash register go off announcing that a new item was bought. I was currently rushing from costumer to costumer explaining different baked goods, giving the wanted baked goods to others, and explaining which I thought would go best for someone. I was wearing the bakeries outfit of a plain white T-shirt, black pants, none slick shoes, and a blue half apron with white straps. I was currently helping someone when Mama called for me.

"Y/N can you go get some more forest cookies from the back and tell Papa to make some another vanilla cake, it's almost out!" She yelled above the chatter of different costumers while ringing up another person who seemed to be buying out the entire cookie department.

"Okay Mama!" I replied and turned to the wood carver who was currently looking at different cake-like pastries. "Sorry Mr. Reid, I'll be back." I told the 40 year old man.

"Don't worry, I will be here, go get those cookies." He said shooing me with a smile. I gave a quick 'Thank you' before speed walking my way to the back where the kitchen was. The clattering of pots and pans were heard, along with the smell of freshly baked goods, and the heat of the oven making it sweltering hot inside. "Papa! Where's that fresh batch of forest cookies? Also Mama says we need another vanilla cake." I said as I turning to the tall brown haired man.

Papa was wearing something similar to what I was wearing, but instead of a half apron he had a full apron on that was covered in confectioneries and flour, some was even in his hair surprisingly. His brown hair stuck to the top of his forehead as his eyes stared deeply into the dough he was rolling out for another batch of cookies, concentration radiating off him. He pointed over to the counter built into the wall next to the oven, to keep the baked goods warm, on a plastic tray sat some round cookies, with walnuts sticking out of the corners, covered in green icing at the top. I instantly went over to the tray and took it back into the main area.

It looked as though there were fewer people, but it was still pretty busy. I quickly switched the trays, putting the older cookies in the back for when they were asked for, and went back to put the dirty tray in the large dirty dish pile. 'We really need a dishwasher' I noted and bolted back to where Mr. Reid was. I was slightly panting once back in front of him, but kept a smile on my face.

"Don't worry about it Red, now as you were saying about this one." He said pointing a finger at a small cake like pastry. His dark brown eyes staring at it in curiosity.

"Ah, yes!" I said going back to my explanation of the small chocolate covered cake.

Ding

I waved goodbye to our last costumer of the hour, the milk lady, as she left with some butter cookies and was waving goodbye to us as well. Once the doors bell chimed signaling that she was finally gone I slumped onto the display case with a tired sigh, my H/L H/C hair going everywhere and slightly covering my eyes.

"Tired?" Mama asks as she walks over to me then leans against the case herself with a soft smile, her blue eyes showing how tired she was as well. I nodded glancing at her from the corner of my eyes. She chuckled lightly and rubbed my back as we both sat there, enjoying the silence. Until it was broken.

"Hey Ellie, we're almost out of apples." Papa said coming from the back room, stretching his back out as he held it with his hands. Mama and I stared at him as he looked over to us and blinked in confusion. "What?" He asked before Mama sighed.

"Okay. Y/N can you head over to the Orchard and get some more apples. I'll get you some coins." She said going around the corner, her warm hand leaving my back. I groaned in frustration and frowned slightly.

"Are we really almost out of apples?" I complained to Papa, who was still slightly confused, but nodded none-the-less as he turned over and placed his large calloused hand in place of Mama's. "I don't want to go there." I complained into my arms, pouting in annoyance.

"I know you hate going there and one of use would, but there's only three of us and Mama runs the register while I bake the bakes." Papa says watching Mama open the register and pull out some gold coins. I huffed.

"Why can't I run the register?" I asked in a low voice.

"Because knowing you, you would most likely get the amount wrong and overpay a costumer." Mama says with a joking smile while holding a small bag. The gold coins jingled within the bag signaling that's where they were. She sat the small bag down next to me and put a hand on my head. "Now go get changed and take the basket, you should be able to get more apples with it." She said making my eyes widen. 'It is bigger than the bags he gives me! Then I wouldn't have to go there as early!' I thought happily and grabbed the small bag of coins and bolted to the backroom to change out of the half apron and into my red hood.

The wind blew softly, the apple trees rustled and shook in protest, while my hair flew in front of my face AGAIN! "Ugh! really!?" I complained putting a hand up and moving my H/C hair out of my face once more. I glanced over to the many trees covered in apples as I slowly made my way down the dirt road. It was such a pretty sight, the trees were trimmed into nearly perfect circles, the sky a beautiful blue with only a few clouds, the wind making it the perfect temperature. I would want to stay for much longer if only-

"Why hello there little Red riding hood~" A voice purred. Ugh, Him! I sighed annoyed and for once had a frown. Although it only showed when he was around or someone talked about me going to see him. His name...

"Chris. Why can't you just leave me to buy some apples in peace?" I asked now speed walking towards a little light wooded shack with the word 'Apples' in red paint on top. A piece of wood sat next to it giving the price of each amount of apples.

"Well that wouldn't be very gentlemanly of me now would it? And it's Christopher." He said easily keeping in step with me, exaggerating his full name. I stopped in front of the shack and turned to the male beside me. He was definitely taller than me as he stood to be 5'7 while I was a very short 5'3, same as Mama. He had blonde trimmed hair that was put up in a small tuft in the front, slightly dark blue eyes, a red plaid shirt that wasn't buttoned all the way up showing the top of his chest, a pair of jeans along with some boots to go with it. Most girls in the village found him hot, me? I found him annoying.

"Not like you're a gentleman anyways Chris." I say exaggerating his shortened name and turned to the empty shack. "Where's Jacob?" I asked referring to his Papa and raised an eyebrow at the blonde boy. Chris crosses his arms with a frown.

"Old man's out of town at the moment. Although I would be happy to serve you." He says with a smirk. I sigh in defeat and turn towards him.

"Okay, can I get some apples then, please?" I asked as nicely as I could attempt. He shrugs.

"I could~" He almost purrs. I was about to protest before he interrupted me. "But, I could do it. For a kiss." He says and leans down, expecting a kiss. I take a step back and cross my arms.

"I'm not doing that. Just get me my apples." I slightly demand. He leans back and stares me down with a smirk. His eyes trailing slightly making a chill go down my spine.

"Nah, I like you when you're feisty, and not without a kiss~" He says stepping towards me and leaning down slightly. I take another step back.

"Chris, just get me my apples so I can get back to the shop." I complain as he keeps walking towards me. I continue my way back until my back hits a tree. He smirks and finally uncross his arms in order to pin me under him.

"No can do Little Red~" He says his voice lowering into a husky purr. Another shiver runs up my spine. A twig nearby snaps, but Chris and I are too focused to bother with it.

"CHRISTOPHER!" A voice booms making me and the blonde above jump in surprise. Chris instantly gets off me and turns to his Papa.

"F-Father, I thought you were-"

"Out of town? Yes I was, I just got back." A tall much more muscular, blonde headed, man says. His dark blue eyes staring holes into his son. "Now what were you doing to this little lady?" He asks, his arms crossed, as he steps up in slow calculating steps.

"I-I.. I wasn't uh.. I-" Chris stuttered awkwardly, attempting to think of an excuse as to why he was pinning me under a tree like some cheesy romantic scene. Although it wasn't really romantic.

"Well?!" His father boomed. I sighed before stepping to the side of Chris with a small smile.

"He was just looking in my eye, I thought I had something in it." I say, rubbing my eye to prove my point, as Chris looks to me in slight surprise.

"Y-Yeah, I was- I was doing that." He quickly agreed. "Did you get it out Y/N?" He asked me. I stopped rubbing my eye and looked to him with a smile.

"Yeah I did, thanks Chris." I said with fake happiness. "Anyways, Jacob," I said now looking to the large man. "I'm here to buy some apples." I said with a smile. Jacob glanced over between me and Chris with questioning eyes before responding.

"Sure, how much?" He asked me. I held up the wicker basket.

"Just fill this up please. The money should be inside it." I said handing him the basket. He held it carefully before opening and digging into it before pulling out the small bag of gold coins. He smiled warmly before looking to me.

"Okay, I'll be right back." He said disappearing into the small forest of apple trees. Once he was out of hearing range I instantly turned to Chris with a small glare.

"You. Owe. Me." I said, venom dripping from my words. He just nodded with a sigh before turning and heading into the orchard, most likely to continue his work himself. I gave myself a victorious smirk before turning back to the orchard, waiting for Jacob. I thought back to the twig from earlier, but decided it was most likely Jacob.

I never heard the receding steps from inside the orchard that weren't Jacob nor Chris.
