The Hands That Hurt Us- Part 23
"Well when he wakes up we could ask him," Jimin suggested.
"He probably won't tell the truth anyway," Hobi pouted.
"We could threaten him. Tell him to tell us why he panics about us in his sleep or else...ugh...no ice cream for the rest of this trip!" Jin suggested.
The members all looked at Jin before breaking out into a quiet laugh. They all knew not completely spoiling their maknae would be way too hard.
Another loud boom of thunder shook the house and Hobi panicked and ran into Namjoon's arms. "Aish! When will this be over?!"
Yoongi checked the weather again. "It's actually already ending."
They all looked back at Taehyung and Jungkook on the couch and wondered how neither of them were waking up from the storm.
The members decided to try and get more sleep, but they all stayed in the living room sharing the couches with each other. In the morning the smell of someone making pancakes filled the house and woke everyone up. Hobi and Jin had woken up early to make breakfast.
Taehyung got off the couch and pulled Jungkook up after him, dragging him into the kitchen with him. They both started picking at the pancakes that were stacked on a plate.
"Good morning!" Hobi shouted excitedly.
Jin turned to Jungkook. "So, how did you sleep?" Jin already knew the answer but wanted to see what Jungkook would say.
"I'm a little tired but I think I slept okay."
Jin gave a look between Namjoon and Yoongi, and Namjoon nodded. Jin set his cooking utensils down and asked Jungkook if he could talk to him for a second. The maknae nodded and followed Jin into one of the spare bedrooms. He heard the door close behind him to see Namjoon and Yoongi also standing there. He looked around confused.
"What's going on? Am I in trouble?" Jungkook asked while frowning. In his head he tried to replay things he may have done wrong but couldn't quite think of anything.
"No, no, or course not. We just wanted to ask you what your dream was about last night?" Yoongi asked.
"What do you mean? What dream?"
"The one that had you screaming for someone to stop grabbing you and hurting Taehyung," Yoongi said.
Jungkook gulped. Oh, that dream. I was talking out loud? Don't I usually wake up if it's that bad?
"Oh-I-uh...I'm not sure. I don't remember."
Namjoon stepped forward. "You're telling me you had a nightmare that bad and you don't remember it?"
Jungkook nodded silently. He wasn't about to tell them who was hurting him and Taehyung in that dream.
"Jungkook," Jin started, "Most of your nightmares involve us. Us getting hurt. We want to know why. Who was hurting you guys in that dream? Tell us the truth."
"I don't remember, hyung. Maybe it was a crazy fan or something!" Jungkook was starting to get defensive. He didn't like feeling pressured.
"Are we in some kind of danger you're not telling us about?" Namjoon asked sternly.
"What do you mean?" the maknae asked.
"If you're panicking in your sleep about us getting hurt, is it because you know something maybe we don't? Are we in some kind of danger that only you are aware of?"
"No." Jungkook wasn't too sure how to answer that. Are they? Technically they're only in danger if I say or do something. As long as I keep my mouth shut, they're safe, right? But manager Shik never hurt anyone after I messed up last week. He hasn't hurt me in a while either. So we're all safe now, right?
"Because if we are, don't you think it's a bit unfair not to tell us? Not to warn us?" Namjoon crossed his arms. He thought maybe he could guilt trip Jungkook somehow into telling them why he was so worried about them. Because Namjoon knew enough to know Jungkook was worried about them and it was manifesting itself in his sleep.
Jungkook's eyes began to sting. He wanted to cry. Of course he wanted to tell them. He wanted to tell them everything but still didn't want to find out the consequences of doing that. Shik may have been a bit different lately, but it still wasn't a risk he was willing to take.
Jungkook decided to lie. "It was just a crazy fan hurting Taehyung and I was trying to save him. Happy? I always worry about fans hurting all of you. The thought scares me."
"We've been at this job for a good ten years and you've never been this concerned about it. Not like you have been the past few months. Are fans threatening us? Something only you know about?" Namjoon asked his maknae. He was trying to not get angry. He knew Jungkook was lying about something.
"No."
Jin and Yoongi both sighed. They were ready to be done with the interrogation, it was clearly proving pointless.
Jin walked past them. "I need to go finish helping Hobi make breakfast." He patted Jungkook's back before leaving the room.
Jungkook looked back and forth between Namjoon and Yoongi. "Are we done?"
"No." Namjoon was extremely nervous about it, but figured now was the perfect time to bring it up. "I think now is probably a good time to tell you I want you trying therapy again."
"Really?" Yoongi was also taken by surprise. He hadn't quite considered it after everything that happened last time.
"What?!" Jungkook yelled. "No! Hyung no!" He backed up away from Namjoon.
Jin opened the door and popped his head back in. "What's wrong?" He looked at Jungkook and saw his maknae immediately start crying. Jin looked at Namjoon. "What happened?"
"You'd really put me through that again!?" Jungkook cried.
Namjoon put his arms up in surrender. "Wait, wait, wait. Hear me out, okay?"
"I said no hyung!" Jungkook didn't care what Namjoon had to say. He was not trying that again.
"Through what again?" Jin asked a bit more frustrated.
"Therapy," Yoongi told his hyung.
Jin looked at Namjoon. The thought made him quite nervous too.
"Will you just listen to me please?!" Namjoon was irritated. "Jungkook. I'm not going to let manager Shik pick your therapist again. I will do it. Or you can do it. Or we can just ask your doctor for a suggestion."
"But hyung what if-" Namjoon cut Jungkook off, "AND, if you're still scared of that, we can ask your doctor if any of them make house visits instead. Someone who can come over and just talk to you in your room or something. That way all of us know you're safe, and if anything happens you can just come get us, not that anything would happen."
Jungkook took deep breaths and calmed down. It definitely sounded like a better idea than what he had to deal with last time, although he wasn't too sure why Namjoon was still set on him even seeing a therapist.
"Why?" the maknae asked his leader.
"Why what?"
"Why do you still want me in therapy? I've been fine for weeks haven't I?"
"I mean yes, but if you're still having bad nightmares then whatever the issue is hasn't gone away."
"But hyung it was only one nightmare in weeks!"
"I know. I still think it will be good for you. And like I said last time, just try it and if it doesn't help or work out we can figure something else out. Yeah?" Namjoon stared at Jungkook.
Jungkook dropped his gaze to the floor. His tears had stopped but he was visibly still quite sad. Jin walked over and hugged him, followed by Yoongi and Namjoon.
Namjoon started rubbing his back. "Please don't be upset with me." He hated having to be stern and it was breaking him knowing he was the reason his maknae was sad right now, but he knew sometimes he had no choice if he was going to get Jungkook to listen.
"I'm not upset with you," Jungkook said as he rested into his hyungs hug. He was a little upset, but he could tell Namjoon was feeling bad too and didn't want to make it worse for him either. He figured since manager Shik had for whatever reason decided not to hurt him anymore, the therapy would surely be over with quickly.
He saw one nightmare in weeks as good. He figured he was getting better. Especially with Shik now off his back, he'd be good as new in no time. He hadn't had any bruises or injuries or scolding's from his manager in almost a month, even after messing up on stage only a week ago. That had to count for something.
They heard Hobi yell from the kitchen that breakfast was ready and Namjoon said they could be done and apologized to Jungkook for making him sad.
While eating breakfast the members talked about what they should record themselves doing today for the show Shik was trying to make. Their manager hadn't been specific on any kind of theme so figured they'd just be recording any and everything. Hobi kept going on and on about the storm last night and how it miraculously never woke Jungkook up.
The maknae was curious about how all of his hyungs ended up in the living room and why Taehyung was on the couch with him. He felt bad when Taehyung told him he had a bad dream about him. He wondered why his hyungs interrogated him about his nightmares but took Taehyung's with a grain of salt. He concluded that it made more sense as to why Taehyung would be worried about him, considering all of his hyungs had actual evident reasons to be.
Jimin asked if the first thing they could do was to go swimming in the ocean. Their vacation house was right on the beach and they hadn't even had the chance to swim in it yet. The members agreed it'd be fun, except Yoongi who wanted nothing to do with the water. He offered to record instead.
Jin and Yoongi both stood at the edge of the water. Yoongi had a GoPro he used to record with from the shore. Jin was watching the maknae's, especially Jungkook, like a hawk. The boy was clumsy enough at home the last thing he needed was for Jungkook to drown or something and nobody notice. Although everyone seemed to be staying close and keeping their eyes on the youngest.
Jimin and Namjoon also had GoPro's in the water with them and they recorded all of them playing games. They played chicken quite a lot which proved very difficult in waves. Jungkook found floating debris from the storm in the water and was pretending to use it as a boat. Hobi jumped on it with him. They spent a few hours swimming before changing and venturing off back into town to find more fun activities to do. While at a park, Namjoon and Jimin were standing back watching the others.
"Look at him," Jimin pointed to Jungkook who was running around chasing Yoongi with a worm, "He's actually happy. Aside from last night, he's been really happy and having fun here. I don't get it. What's different?"
Namjoon took the question to heart. Jimin was right. Jungkook had been their happy normal maknae on this trip. He tried to think of why. Aside from the fact they were having fun in Hawaii together. Namjoon was able to immediately conclude that Jungkook's struggles had nothing to do with his hyungs. He clearly was happy being with them.
The leader had also spent a lot of time thinking that Jungkook was reading things online that were upsetting him or making him have all of his anxiety, but now that wasn't adding up either. Jungkook had his phone with him on this vacation. He had access to online. Whatever problem he was dealing with at home, if it was based off the internet, it would have followed his maknae on vacation, yet it hadn't.
"Great question," Namjoon concluded. So it's not us and it's not the internet? So what is the problem? Therapy will definitely help.
The next few days were spent the same way. Recording themselves going out and exploring. Before they knew it, they reached the last day of vacation. Jungkook seemed to be less enthusiastic and a bit sulky, claiming it was just because the fun vacation was over.
"I'm sure we will get to go on another one!" Jin told his maknae trying to cheer him up as they finished packing. Once Jungkook had finished packing he snuck out the door to go sit on the beach alone.
The members panicked when they were looking for him and couldn't find him anywhere until Namjoon ran outside and saw him sitting by the ocean. He let the members know he found him and ran to him, sitting next to him.
"Ahh! Jungkook-ah I told you I didn't want you alone," Namjoon told him.
Jungkook didn't really acknowledge it. He was staring at the ground making drawings in the sand with a stick.
Namjoon wrapped his arms around his shoulders. "What's wrong?"
Jungkook shrugged.
"Maknae? You can tell me."
" I wish we could stay here. A little longer anyway."
"I did notice you had quite some fun. We could always plan another trip here when we get the chance."
Jungkook rested his head on Namjoon's shoulder. "I wish we didn't have to leave at all."
"But we have to get back to work."
Jungkook stayed silent. Namjoon looked at his maknae and realized he didn't seem all that excited, which made him nervous. Work. Does his issue have to do with actually being at work?
Namjoon shook his maknae's shoulder a bit. "Is something else on your mind? Aren't you excited to get back to work? The show will be coming out and the fans will love it!" He tried to be enthusiastic enough for the both of them. The thought of Jungkook not loving what he does for work anymore scared the hell out of him.
Jungkook was in a weird mood. He was excited for the show to come out. He did love his job. At the same time he didn't want to go back home either.
"Too bad we can't just work from here," Jungkook pouted. Shik may not have beaten him in a while but that didn't mean Jungkook suddenly trusted or liked the guy. He'd rather not be anywhere near him.
"Why?" Namjoon raised an eyebrow.
"Huh?"
"What's the difference between working from here and working from home?"
Jungkook slightly panicked. He looked around, "It's just...this view is relaxing." He faked a smile at his leader.
Namjoon ruffled the youngers hair. "You got me there." Namjoon wasn't quite convinced, though. "But you know if you're having some kind of problem at work just tell me. I know sometimes you think the company won't listen to you because you're the maknae but me and Jin could always speak on your behalf if something is bothering you."
Jungkook nodded and said thanks, but claimed he was fine.
The leader stood up and offered his hand. "We have to get going. I promise we will find time to come back. Even if it's just us."
Jungkook smiled and got up. The rest of the evening was busy with everyone loading their luggage into taxi's and heading back to the airport. The plane ride home felt a lot faster than the plane ride to Hawaii.
Once they arrived back at their dorm nobody was awake enough to unpack, they threw their luggage around the house and crashed for the rest of the night. Namjoon had to stay up to send in all of the footage to Shik, the manager said he needed it immediately because he wanted the show out ASAP. He was a bit curious as to why Shik was in such a hurry, usually something like this took months of editing. And apparently instead of one episode being aired a week, Shik was going to be airing all the episodes the same day for people to binge watch.
The members had to be at work bright and early the next day. Shik had called everyone into a conference room because he had "news."
Jungkook could only hope that the news was that the man had decided to quit or was being fired. He kept his distance and sat in the furthest seat from his boss.
"You're going to an award show next week. You have a performance, and you're up for six awards," Shik informed the group.
They all started cheering, they had no idea until now. Shik somehow found out before the nominations were publicly released.
The next week was spent preparing for the award show. The news publicly came out and Shik wasn't kidding, the group was actually nominated for six awards. They were extremely excited. They had to perform three songs so they practiced from morning until night with their choreography and vocals.
Jungkook was still surprised that Shik hadn't touched him at all that week. He was waiting in the hallway for Hobi one day and Shik walked by and barely even acknowledged his presence. The man seemed in a hurry. He wondered if Shik felt bad or had any remorse for how he'd treated him. Jungkook thought maybe Shik wanted to apologize and didn't know how. Maybe someone really did find out what he was doing and the man got in trouble for it. The maknae had no clue, but he had high hopes.
During the week the episodes of their vacation also came out and the fans went absolutely crazy over it. It quickly ranked to the most viewed show in Korean television and Twitter and Instagram were flooded with quotes and memes of the guys. The members thought it was the coolest thing ever and agreed they'd all love to do it again.
The night of the award show finally came and the members gave an amazing performance. Jungkook wasn't anxious about messing up on stage anymore. Shik hadn't threatened him in a while about it. He still tried his best though and didn't mess up, it was nice not being consumed with the anxiety while on stage.
The members had already won five out of the six awards they were nominated for. Shik was sitting at the booth with them and congratulated them, but when they won that sixth award Shik was almost too excited. He was jumping up and down and screaming and even followed the members onto the stage. Jungkook was the only one confused as to why.
Towards the end of the show there was an announcement that there was a new category of award being presented that night.
Top manager of the KPOP industry.
The members all looked to Shik and smiled, wondering if he knew about it or not. Jungkook wasn't as excited. He knew if there was anyone who didn't deserve that award, it was Shik.
But Shik won.
Jungkook tried to fake a smile as they had to follow Shik onto the stage for the man to give his speech. Shik started thanking everyone and talking about how it is a great honor to work with the group, how he loved being their manager, how he couldn't have done it without them.
Jungkook got curious. Couldn't have done it without us?
While they were back at the booth, Jungkook looked up the new award for top manager and he started putting the pieces together. The main thing was that Shik couldn't have won that award unless BTS had won the sixth award, which they won because of the show. And in order to be nominated, BTS had to be nominated for four of the other awards, which they had won for things such as the charity event they had done a while ago, the performances they did, and some of their other work.
What also stuck out to Jungkook was that winning meant a huge cash prize and a bigger standing in the industry. The maknae didn't like that. Shik just won a lot of money, and a lot more power. And he used the band to do it. Does he actually care about our success or did he just overwork us for his personal gain?
The rest of the night was a bit of a blur for Jungkook. He was lost in thought while everyone else had celebrated. He didn't agree with any of it. He was happy they had won their awards, but was so upset that Shik had won top manager. He wondered what that meant for the band. Will Shik work us even harder than he already is?
Jungkook also tried to look on the bright side. With more power comes more responsibility and Shik had already been so busy the past month preparing for the award he barely had time to notice Jungkook's existence. The maknae figured maybe now the man will just always be too busy to really bother with them anymore.
The next day the members had a bit more free time while at work. They were able to slow down working on their choreography and spent some time working on their solo mixtapes. Jungkook was finally able to work alone in his studio without panicking, nobody came to bother him except Yoongi at one point. After spending time in their studios, Hobi sent a text saying he was reviewing some of their dance videos and really needed them to work on some stuff.
They met back up in the dance studio and Hobi showed them where they needed some improvement. In the middle of practice Jungkook excused himself to go use the bathroom, and when he came out he was met by his manager.
"Have a minute?" Shik asked.
Jungkook hesitated but wondered if this was Shik ready to apologize.
"Sure but Hobi hyung needs me back."
"It will just be a minute."
Shik gestured for them to enter into one of the old practice rooms. Jungkook was nervous but reminded himself the abuse had been over for a long time. It's over. He was surprised Shik even had time to speak with him. The man had been so busy lately.
"What is it you wanted to talk about?" Jungkook asked. Still making sure to keep his distance.
"Well, now that I finally have some time on my hands. I wanted to congratulate you on the awards you won."
Jungkook was confused. Shik had already congratulated everyone. Why would he want to congratulate Jungkook privately? He hadn't won any solo awards. He watched Shik start to pace around the room and the anxiety that he thought he had tucked deep and far away regarding his manager was beginning to resurface.
"And would you like to know what else you've won?" Shik asked as he walked over to a closet and opened it.
"What?" Jungkook gulped. What the hell would he have in a closet?
Shik pulled out a metal bat.
"A fucking death wish, maknae."
