Chapter 1| Elaria

"Ugh, stop that, stop it!" I said while pushing the pillow harder to my head, trying to block out that little bird, which can't stop squeaking on the top of my bed.

"If I wasn't the one who woke you up every morning, we weren't going to see you until night time, wake up, wake up darling." He whistled his little song into my ear; for a cute little bird, his voice was coarse and deep.

"Five more minutes!" I groaned, shuffling on my bed, annoyed.

"It's already 6 am; get up and get some exercise, lovely, come on!" He hopped on top of my head.

"Plus, if you don't get up early; Mrs. Foster is going to get mad at you, and she'll take your job away, and may I say that she was the only one to hire you, and-"

"And...I am up." I interrupted, removing the pillow from over my face and getting up.

I've heard the same words from him since I got the job. It isn't like I can't do anything, but I always get fired for the silliest reasons; it wasn't my fault they weren't able to keep up with me. I like to think about myself, that I am a hard-working, creative girl who anyone is lucky to hire. However, I might have had some grudges along my career path.

And by 'grudges'I mean; not always waking up in time, overhearing some secrets, accidentally getting the farm animals into the house, and turning dogs pink...don't ask.

But that could've happened to anyone in of course.

I stood in the middle of my small room, yawning while stretching my arms up in the air. I got some water from the well nearby; to wash my face, then I wore my working gown. It was kind of a brown dress with a white apron, the kind that you would know what I do for a living, from the first glance.

I am a maid.

Very fun if you asked me; like the worst job in the world kind of fun, but it was my only option. After the whole 'farm animals' incident, and it seems like I had a not very good reputation in the area.

I opened the door and prepared some cheese and bread for breakfast. I at quickly almost swallowing the plate as I realized that I was late...again.

I ran outside my small cottage, making my way into the woods. I have to keep this job; it was the only job that accepted me. Though I worked as a maid, I was working at the palace. It's stressful and a handful and all, but for me, it's better than working at houses.

I pushed the kitchen door opened, ringing the little bell on top of it announcing that I arrived, and to my surprise, I was there just in time, 6:30! It sounds like a good day, after all.

I peeked my head through the gab, checking if there was anyone in there, but the coast was clear. Catching my breath, I found some biscuits in a box; I don't steal or anything, but those biscuits were either cracked or burned, so we weren't going to serve it to the royal, of course. Taking the box, I slowly hid it into my apron just in case anyone would notice and made my way to the stable.

"Here is my favorite boy; don't you want a treat!" I patted the farm dog, which was standing in front of the servants' door.

"You're on time! Well, that's a record." He said, getting me to roll my eyes.

He was a white dog and tall like a horse with black dots scattered all over his body, but he looked happy like a little puppy with these biscuits.

I kept feeding him some biscuits until I noticed the time I wasted. I quickly hid the box into the hay and jogged towards the kitchen again, pretending I was busy working, as Mrs. Foster, the head of servants, entered just seconds later.

This lady was kind of chubby, short, and with a very red face, which always seemed angry for no reason; it was fair enough to say she scares me.

"Well, that's the spirit I want!" She grinned at me while patting my shoulder hard; I nervously smiled back. "Tsk tsk," She shook her head while holding up some strands of my hair 'How many times have we talked about this? I don't want hair in my kitchen, or anywhere if it matters." She crossed her arms unapprovingly.

My hair was black, long, and always untidy with its curls everywhere; I loved it that way, never liked to tie it up. It had made me feel special for some reason. I had to, of course, so I just grabbed an old strip that I found in my dress pocket and tied it up quickly, leaving some strands dangling here and there.

Everyone gathered around Mrs. Foster; to hear what their jobs are for today.

"BOB!" She shouted every name hard enough for your heart to skip a beat. "You clean the stable, JOE! You clean the outside windows."

I let my mind go for a moment; I've always been fascinated by the fact that at some point are lives might never be the same; a few days from now, maybe months or even years, I could be in a whole different place in the world, that I would've never imagined I would be. I didn't expect that I went daydreaming for so long until I heard Mrs. Foster shouting my name.

"MILLICENT!"

"Here..!" I announced awkwardly, wincing a little bit.

I looked around and realized I was standing with only one girl left, not called for a job yet. That means one thing, Mrs. Foster always sends the last to be directly helping the queen or the two princesses, in dressing, getting food, drinking, or even, have someone to annoy; whatever they want, we should only obey; so in other words, they get to enslave me for the whole day. It also means that Mrs. Foster trusts me after all; she wouldn't put me in this mess there unless she does.

Or, she hates me so much, so she wanted me to experience literal hell.

Because I can't also deny it was the last job for anyone to want to work, the king's two daughters are some crazy little ones.

"Millicent, Billie; you two will help to assist me with her majesty and the princesses today." We both nodded while I mentally groaned.

"YOU," She stopped glaring at me like she was interrupted by an invisible person. "Behave."

"I won't do anything, I promise!" I gave an innocent look.

"You better not." She huffed, walking away.

And with Billie, who seemed to be a person with little words, we went after Mrs. Foster.

As we just got in front of the door that separates the servants' area from the rest of the castle, the ring of the second room rang; who was the queen's and king's youngest daughter, Elaria.

She is eighteen, the same age as me, and what you can describe as the pebble in your shoe. At least for me, I had never been fond of her, or anyone.

We went upstairs, and as just as we began to knock, the screaming broke through our ears.

"That's mine, you hear me!" She yelled at her older sister Veronica.

"Okay, then take it!" Veronica said calmly, throwing a pink brush, which Elaria hardly caught before hitting her face. I would've liked to see that.

"Why are you so late?" Elaria shouted at us; while giving me dirty looks from head to toe, a sarcastic remark was at the edge of my tongue, but I remembered that I promised; I won't do anything, and for the sake of the job, I chose not to.

"We are very sorry for being late. " Mrs. Foster said apologetically.

"Then hurry up! I am not getting any older here!"

We hurried up, not saying a single word. We helped put on the simple but elegant blue dress Elaria was going to wear this morning; of course, that was after having a hard time tightening up her corset; suffocating to death is on the fashion lead now. Mrs. Foster began to tie up her golden hair into a fancy bun with beads all over it.

I hate to admit it, but this grumpy, rude, ungrateful girl is very good looking. She is so pretty a lot of girls considered her a beauty icon here; Elaria and her sister looked the same as their mother, with their large emerald eyes and their blonde wavy hair.

Veronica, on the other hand, did everything by herself; to my surprise, she was very polite to us, or maybe she is just trying to be the good queen everybody expects her to be.

After she was all ready to go down for breakfast, we went after her while she walked head up high and towards the in the back garden, which where they always had their breakfast.

We just stood afar, watching her and her sister eating and waiting for any order from them. Who would've thought that a simple task as eating could've done this elegantly?

"You!" She pointed at me with disgust on her face, "clean this up!" She said in her posh voice.

Goodness, I want to punch her so hard that her face doesn't get back the same. I looked around me, muddled; there was nothing for me to clean up.

"Clean what exactly?" I furrowed my eyebrows.

"This..." she gave us a fake sweet smile while extending a hand with a cup full of tea and throwing it to the ground, making me wince from the breaking sound.

"That's for making my tea taste bitter..." She mumbled through her mouth full of biscuit.

Mrs. Foster gave me a warning look, which I nodded to stiffly and just bent down, and started cleaning.

"You know that you are the one who puts the sugar you want, right?" Veronica remarked at her sister with a calm voice.

I snorted, holding back my laugh, while gently collecting the broken glass from the terrace.

"Then this is for not warning me." She said dumbly, and I could have sworn that I've seen her blush.

"I apologize for my sister's behavior." Veronica sighed, looking at me with no emotion on her face.

I smiled at her and nodded, which she gave a small crooked smiled back.

I soon finished cleaning and went again to my spot next to Mrs. Foster.

I spent the rest of the day picking up Elaria's fork when she dropped it "unintentionally" I had to clean her shoes whenever a piece of dirt came over it, in her walk in the garden and with Veronica apologizing all over again, and again.

I've been shouted at, pushed, and humiliated so much today that I don't know how did I survive.

I walked home slowly, questioning my life choices. Seeing Alfred, the little blue bird, still singing, but this time he had his band with him, almost cheered me up.

"Hey, Al." I greeted exhaustedly.

"Hello, darling," he said with this suspicious accent of his I smiled back and continued walking, hearing their little concert as I went in.

"Surprise!" Caroline shouted happily.

"It doesn't count as a surprise if I see you in the 24 hours every day in the week," I smirked while rolling my eyes.

Caroline wasn't just my best friend, we also grew up together, and we two grew up in the same circumstances. She was the only family I have, and I won't deny the fact that she was also the only person I know. I am a loner; I can't imagine why.

"Hey! Al, thank you for not ruining the surprise!"

"No problem, love." He chanted.

"He so polite to be a bird." She whispered to me, taking a muffin out of the tray I put on the wooden table; her legs have rested on top of it.

"I heard you!" We heard him playfully shout.

We laughed softly.

"How was your day?" She asked slowly enough for me to get back through all the tiring moments to remember.

"The queen's daughter, Elaria!"

She understood all I had today, with just four words; I love her when she does that.

"Oooh, tell me! What did she do? Was she mean? Or nice? I hardly think she is, to be honest, I--" She excitedly flew with questions.

"She is like an evil baby! You can't leave her alone, or she will start to yell, scream, and bite."

"You know what? We have to have fun tonight!" She announced excitedly.

"Have fun?" I raised my eyebrows while leaning on the wooden table.

"Come on, don't be like that, we can go around the village, we can take two horses from the stable! It was always a good idea for you."

"Okay...?" I said, waiting for her to continue.

"And we are going to play one game you always liked!" She announced while taking a large bite from the muffin she held.

I looked into her eyes, so she dare not say the words.

"People hunting!" She said spitting, with a mouth full.

"Okay, you said it." She looked excited, and to be honest, I didn't want to burst her bubble; that was the first fun thing we are going to have for one or two years. "I will go rest now, and tonight we are going to blast it." I smiled and entered my room with tired eyes.

Caroline doesn't even like this game.

That's weird.
