Chapter Sixteen: Recovery

Nikita woke with a start to find herself lying in a hospital bed. There were three other hospital beds in the room aside from hers. Her golden eyes fell on her classmates Tenya Iida the class rep and Izuku Midoriya sitting up in the beds across from her. Both of Tenya's arms were heavily bandaged and in slings and she could see bandages poking out from the v-neck of his hospital gown. Midoriya had bandages on his left leg and right arm. They stared at her in awe as she struggled to sit up.

A strong hand caught her by the shoulder halting her attempt at escape and she looked up to find a pair of mismatched eyes staring down at her. "Sho-chan!" She cried and attempted once more, to no avail, to get up so she could hug him. Her gaze fell on a thin layer of bandages covering his left forearm.

"You're really injured, Niko. Don't move around so much." He sighed as he sat on the edge of her bed so she wouldn't be tempted to scurry off.

"You're hurt, Sho-chan!" She sounded worried as tears welled in her golden eyes.

"Nothing serious." He reassured her with a smile.

"What happened, how come you all are injured?" She sniffled.

"Us? You nearly died." Tenya pointed matter of factly.

"Yeah, what happened to you, Nikita?" Midoriya asked her worried.

Nikita suddenly blanched as she remembered the events of the night before, "Ugh!" She buried her face behind her hands.

"What is it? Are you okay?" Shoto panicked thinking something was severely wrong with the cat like girl.

"This means I owe that jerk a thank you." Nikita growled.

"My dad?" Shoto chuckled.

"Yes!" She whined, "Stupid flameface. Why the hell did he save me? He doesn't even like me." Nikita suddenly realized the boys were trying to distract her from her questions and shot them all a glare, "Hey! Don't avoid my question like that, what happened to you guys?"

The door to their hospital room swung open and the short elderly hero in the white and gold suit with the gold cape and a local hero Nikita didn't recognize wearing a pale blue suit with what looked like a fin atop his helmet stepped into the room.

"Oh, the injured youngins are awake." The old man noted with a smile.

"Gran Torino!" Midoriya cheered with a bright smile.

"And Manual, too." Tenya lowered his head looking guilty.

"Idiot!" Gran Torina, the elderly man, snapped at Midoriya, "I could yell at you for hours right now." He grumbled as he stalked toward Midoriya's hospital bed.

Midoriya flinched, "Yeah. I'm sorry."

"But, before I do, you've got a visitor." Gran Torino looked to the door. Nikita and the others turned to see who had stopped by. A tall giant of a man with the face of a bloodhound dressed in a nice suit ducked into their room. "This is Hosu's Chief of Police Kenji Tsuragame."

Shoto and Tenya got to their feet to show respect. Nikita found herself being held firmly in place as Shoto's hand gripped her shoulder. Midoriya attempted to inch out of bed but was stopped by the dog man.

"No, please stay seated-woof."

Woof? Did he just woof? Nikita couldn't help but giggle.

"So, you're the U.A students who brought down the Hero Killer, huh?" Tsuragame began.

"WHAT?!" Nikita shot Shoto a glare, "You did what?!" She shot her classmates a glare before turning on Shoto.

"I'll admit, it probably would have gone more smoothly had I brought you along, but I heard you saved a lot of people." Shoto smiled and lightly placed his hand atop her head quelling her rage as he scratched behind her fluffy black ears.

A purr escaped the cat like girl and her cheeks flushed scarlet. She swatted him away with a hiss before burying her face beneath her pillow, "Sho-chan!"

The police chief continued on, ignoring the cat girl's outburst, "Stain has some serious injuries. Several burns and broken bones. Right now, he's in the hospital under strict guard. Woof. Here's a lesson you should have already learned. When quirks became the norm, the police force sought to maintain the status quo. They decided we wouldn't use quirks as weapons. That's when heroes came in. They could do what we couldn't if they were licensed of course, woof. It would be impossible for the police to condone the use of deadly quirks. After all we're here to stop such harm from being done. The only reason pros can use their powers now is because of the strict code of ethics that the early heroes chose to abide by. That's why it's against the law for uncertified people to use their quirks to cause injury. Whether you were up against the Hero Killer or not, none of you had the authority to harm the villain. That means the three of you and your supervisors, Endeavor, Manual and Gran Torino should receive harsh punishments for this gross abuse of your powers."

Nikita moved her pillow aside. Was Shoto going to be in trouble for what they'd done? They took down the hero killer, on their own and they were going to be punished for it? She clenched her fists. "Wait! That's not fair!" She glowered.

Shoto's grip on her shoulder tightened, he looked angry as well, "If Iida hadn't stepped in, Native would have been murdered and if not for Midoriya both of them would be dead. No one else even realized that the Hero Killer was in Hosu. Are you saying we should have just stood by and watched people die?"

Midoriya looked ready to panic, "Calm down." He held his hands up for peace.

The police chief once again was unaffected by the flare of tempers, "So, its okay to break the law as long as it goes your way?"

"But, sir, isn't it a hero's job to save people?" Shoto retorted.

"This is why you're not a full-fledged pro, yet." The police chief continued, "It's obvious U.A and Endeavor haven't been teaching you near enough. What a shame."

Nikita's nails elongated into claws and her body began to tremble as she was overcome with rage, "Watch it, Dog Breath, no one talks to Sho-chan that way in front of me and gets to walk away intact." Her hand began to shift into a giant paw, she was going to lose control and go full beast at any moment.

"Ah! Nikita, Todoroki! Calm down." Midoriya yelped in a panic.

"Yeah. Listen, he's right." Tenya piped up.

"Alright, stop there, kids." Gran Torino stepped forward and held up a hand for peace. "You'll want to hear him out till the end."

"So long as he doesn't go insulting, Sho-chan he has nothing to worry about." Nikita hissed.

The chief of police smirked at this, "What I've said is the official stance of the police department. But any punishment would only be necessary if this went public. If it did, you'd probably be applauded by citizens everywhere. But there's no way you could escape from being reprimanded. On the other hand, we could say Endeavor saved the day. Stain's burns would support this story completely and we could pretend you weren't involved, woof. Thankfully there were very few witnesses. This could be the last you heard of any punishments. It would mean no one would know about you, though. You'd receive no acclaim at all. The choice is yours. Personally, I know where I stand, I don't want to damage any promising young careers. Not for a mistake like this."

Nikita rolled her eyes and scoffed at this, "It doesn't matter, Sho-chan's still going to be an amazing hero one day and everyone will know it with or without knowing about this incident." She folded her arms across her chest. "Besides, real heroes don't care about the fame or glory and Sho-chan is a real hero. I told you not to go insulting him, Dog Breath."

Shoto smiled at the cat like girl. "Thanks, Niko."

The other pro hero, wearing the pale blue suit bowed his head, "Either way, we'll need to take responsibility for being negligent as supervisors.

Tenya stepped forward and bowed to him apologetically, "I'm sorry, I should have listened."

Manual lightly karate chopped him atop the head, "Yeah! You caused us a lot of trouble. Remember that and don't do it again." Tears welled in his eyes, he'd been worried about his student.

"Sir." Tenya affirmed with another bow.

"And...I apologize as well." Midoriya bowed his head too.

Shoto joined in, "Me too, we'll leave it to you."

"I know it isn't fair, you won't receive any of the fame and praise you would have received otherwise, even if its not something you care about." He added with a smile in the cat girl's direction, "But at least allow me, as the chief of police, to thank you." He bowed to the trio of injured boys.

"You could have started with that." Shoto pointed causing Nikita to laugh. She cut off with a hiss of pain as her ribs protested the action and Shoto ran to her aid. "Niko?"

"I'm okay." She winced. None of them were convinced.

The adults left the teens to rest and recover from their injuries in peace. Nikita reluctantly settled back onto her hospital bed. Shoto sat on the edge of her bed and looked down at the unusually pale girl in concern. While the others were all unconscious recovering from their injuries in the early hours of the morning, he overheard his father talking with Nikita's surgeon. She was in rough shape but still seemed pretty lively for the amount of pain she had to be in. Several of her ribs had been broken, her left lung had been punctured by one of her broken ribs. There'd been a lot of internal bleeding, she'd damaged several organs but the doctor was confident there wouldn't be any permanent damage and thanks to her quirk she healed faster than most people and wouldn't have to be hospitalized nearly as long.
