Chapter 5

The sound of gunfire jolted me awake. From the crack in the tent I seen the orange light of fire and then the screams came. People in pain, and agony. I darted from the bed and out of the tent and stopped dead in my tracks. All of our hard work was up in flames. The walls, the garden the tents, everything.

Two men came up from me right and grabbed me. I had no fight in me, it was like my will to do anything had burned along with the camp. I caught a glimpse of the red wings patch on their jackets in the fire light. They'd come, and they came fast. The bodies of the people I swore to protect lay mutilated in the dirt. Expressions of horror and pain plastered on their faces.

They dragged me for what seemed like hours. With every sight of one of my fellow survivors dead my mind broke just a little more. How could someone be this evil?

They dragged me to the gate where seven people where lined up on their knees with burlap sacs over their heads. Each of them had someone behind them holding a gun to the back of their heads. Like an execution line.

"You see what happens when you fuck with the Bloody Wing?" The man whose jaw I dislocated came from around the gate tapping a knife on the palm of his hand. He walks closer towards me and kneels down in front of me. "I asked you a question."

I didn't have the will to even speak, I was broken.

"Very well. Boys, remove the burlap sacs." He said standing and spinning around.

The sacs were removed one by one. As each sac was removed my heart and mind sank into a deeper and darker pit of agony. Under the seven sacs were my friends who had survived with me from the start.  Each of them with the look of sneering hatred on their faces. Hatred directed at me.

"You did this to us." They all said in a monotonous unison.

That drove the final nail. I felt my sanity slip. It was like looking through a broken kaleidoscope.

"Fire"

"WAIT PLEASE!" I yelled out and shot upright in my bed with my hands reached out in front of me.

Trece ran into my tent to see what was wrong and tears flooded my eyes. She was still here. I ran up to her and embraced her in a hug. She was taken aback for split second but she eventually returned the hug.

"Where is everyone else?" I asked

"They're all in Eric's tent."

It wasn't until she finished her sentence did my mind fully rest.

"We need to prepare for the probability that the Bloody Wing does find us and attacks. I had a dream that felt so real, Trece. I watched all of you die. Each of you said it was my fault and that's not something I ever want to go through again, dream or not."

"You're the leader, here, Donny. We'll follow you, just give the word." She smiled and wiped a tear from under my eye.

We walked out of my tent and the camp was still the same. All the people were still alive and nothing was burnt. I followed Trece to Eric's tent where all of our friends were. To my surprise, Myra was in the tent as well.

"Guys, we are severely unprepared for an attack from anything right now. We need weapons and ammo to at the very least fight back. We've put blood sweat and tears into this camp and I don't want to give it up for nothing."

"I agree," said Blake as he walked through the tents opening. "I'm not saying anything will be there, but I know of a military base on Mount Katahdin, and it's worth a shot to check out. However, we have to go through Baxter State Park which was a quarantine zone. So it's likely to be filled with undead."

The news wasn't nice but Baxter State Park was close to us and we needed anything we could get, even if it was a false hope, I was willing to give it a try. Anything to prevent what happened in that dream becoming reality.

"Let's do it." I said, looking to my friends. "I'm not asking any of you to go, I'll hold a vote after dinner tonight and we'll set out at dawn tomorrow morning."

Eric stood, "I've been with you on all the hunting trips, Donny, I might as well go on this one." He said with a smile.

"I'm going on this one too," exclaimed Blake. "You need someone who knows the way around the base and to the armory."

"Well that settles it. Tonight we'll get anyone else who wants to come and we'll set out in the morning. The more people we have the more we can carry back so I'd prefer to at least have two more but if it ends up just being us three, then we'll just have to deal with that when it comes to it."

"That's how a leader should act," said Sav though a smile. It only happened two days ago but it felt like years that we had that talk by the fire pit.

I smiled and nodded as I walked out of the tent. I had to prepare some type of speech to get anyone else to come. It was a huge risk and that not even I want to take, but we need whatever is in that armory, if there is even anything left.

Things were starting to look up, for once.
