I just want to thank you for reading my translation of this literary masterpiece. I am inspired by Nguyen Quang Sang's story.
"The Ivory Comb" is an amazing short story written by Nguyen Quang Sang on September 23, 1966, in Dong Thap Muoi. He completed it in less than 12 hours while traveling by motorboat. Taking place in the background of the resistance war against the US of the Southern people, the story has sincerely shown readers the terrible devastation of war, which caused numerous deaths and separated many families. However, in that tragic and heroic atmosphere, the father-daughter relationship still shines eternally:
"Its cry was like a cut, cutting the silence and cutting everyone's guts, which was so sad. It was the "Dad" that she had been trying to suppress for so many years, the "Dad" sounded like it broke out from her heart, she cried and rushed forward, as fast as a squirrel, then jumped up and spread her arms to hug her father's neck."
That detail dramatically remarks the plot twist of "The Ivory Comb".

Born in 1932, Nguyen Quang Sang, also known as Nguyen Sang, came from Cho Moi, An Giang province. As a soldier during the French invasion, after 1954, he gathered in the North to start writing. During the years of fighting the US, he lived and worked on the Southern battlefield. Landscapes, people, and the breath of life in his work are rich in Southern colors. Dramatic colors with many heroic stories and attractive, poetic situations create the character and beauty of Nguyen Quang Sang's writing.
The story is about Mr. Six, a soldier who secretly worked in the East and greatly missed his wife and child, using ivory to make a lovely ivory comb. Before he sacrificed, he asked his best friend to give the ivory comb to his little girl, the one he loved so much. Thereby, the author shows the deep father-daughter relationship, the pure comradeship in the wartime plight, and at the same time, praise the revolutionary tradition of the southern farmers.
