Chapter 14
Rex could hear the soldiers footsteps getting closer, as they ran up the fire escape to try and corner him and kill him - but he was more than prepared. In his grip were grenades, with his finger already through the loops ready to pull them and throw them down the stairs. As soon as the first one was in sight, Rex yanked the pins out and threw the grenades down the stairs.
"Grenade!" One called as it landed on the stair. The soldiers began to flee but it was too late and the Grenades exploded in the centre of the crowd. Rex slammed the door shut and ran back to Big Boss, grabbing him and making his way down the stairs to the ground floor with Boss in tow.
"It's very rare for me to say but wow, that was insane. You just took out that whole group. I think one or two are crawling out but they might not make it back down three flights. You're pretty cool." Eli said in awe as he flicked through the cctv at the mess one soldier had managed to make in a building. He clicked the cctv back to Rex and watched him as he hobbled down the stairs with Big Boss.
"Three soldiers coming up from floor one into the stairwell." Millie said sharply as she searched the cctv on her phone. She watched as Rex set Big Boss down again before taking a deep breath in and heading down the stairs, guns ready. The moment the soldiers were in sight, he pulled the trigger and managed to get all of them one after the other. He then ran back up the stairs, blood pumping the adrenaline through his body, as he picked Big Boss up again and headed back down the stairwell once again. He flew down, back towards the three soldiers he had just shot.
"One's still alive!" Eli shouted as one moved his arm up and held his gun at Rex. He pulled the trigger and the bullet flew towards him, scraping his arm and making Rex roar out in pain. In anger, he shot the soldier three times before holstering his gun and moving Big Boss into a more comfortable position, moving swiftly towards the goal once more. As he made his way down, Rex's breathing got heavier and he began to huff.
"Are you okay, Rex?" Millie asked worriedly as she stared down at her phone watching him as he struggled down the stairs.
"Yes!" He shouted through gritted teeth. "Just get us the fuck out of here." Millie bit her lips together in anxiety as she wished there was more she could do to help. Rex took out a few stray soldiers as he made it to the ground floor, hiding away from the door as he set Big Boss down once more. He made sure he kept him hidden, moving him under the stairs in the shadows. "Tell me what's going on through that door." Rex ordered.
"Isn't it a good idea to look after your arm first?" Millie asked, not caring how she came across to Rex.
"No it isn't. We need to get out of here and fast." Rex argued back. "What's behind this door?"
"Around twenty soldiers. Five guarding the door, three by the fire exit, two right in front of the door you're at. Ten others just pacing the area, all in twos." Eli listed off. "I've got a few ideas but I don't know what works for you." Rex thought about the layout and the amount of soldiers, then looked back at his friend who was still unconscious. Rex decided they had no time to waste. He had to just run in there and make a mess. He needed to get Big Boss to hospital and he needed to do it as soon as possible.
"Have you got night vision?" Eli asked, to which he heard a huff from Millie.
"Of course they do! Grenvis version five." She said without hesitation, clearly remembering them from when she ordered them to begin with. "We wouldn't send them in without the simple, obvious things, thanks." Millie said, sounding insulted that Eli even had to ask that question. Rex let out a small snigger, amused at Millie's outburst.
"Alright! I was only asking. I've got a few things that might help Rex during the battle." Eli said calmly back. "Rex, go do your Schwarzenegger thing and we'll be here to assist from above." Rex took a deep breath in and out as he looked over at Big Boss once more. He'd been in situations like this one before, but always with the Boss by his side. Now, he was going in alone and it felt a lot worse. Big Boss's life was dependent on Rex making it out of this and getting him to hospital. It felt like a lot more pressure than it normally did.
"Right." Rex breathed out. "Let's do this."
"Please be careful!" Millie begged, not realising what had come out of her mouth until it already had. She put her hands over her mouth and shook her head, knowing they couldn't see that.
Rex swung the door open and attracted the attention of the first two soldiers instantly. He grabbed his two silenced handguns out of their holsters and shot one in each hand, injuring both soldiers. He quickly shot them both again in the head. He then rushed through the doors and into the hallways. Grabbing two flash grenades, he pulled the pins out and threw them down the hallways to the left and right. He covered his face with his arm as they exploded, blinding everything with the brightest of lights. A few groans and shouts were heard from both directions, so Rex took the opportunity to run down and kill the soldiers that were blinded. He ran to the other hallway and just got the soldiers before they managed to fight back.
"Six down." Rex stated.
"Next ones are to your right, four are talking together." Eli offered, Rex nodding to show he'd heard. He crept up behind them and, dangerously, grabbed one of them to hold them hostage. He put the gun to the soldiers head as he ordered the others to back off, showing no fear despite feeling pretty scared. Rex had no idea if this was going to work and had no time to work out if it was the best idea - all he could think about was how he needed to get Big Boss to the hospital.
"Put your weapons on the floor or I kill him!" Rex ordered. The soldiers looked at each other but kept their weapons up and pointing towards Rex. "Do you want him to die?" Again, the soldiers showed no care towards this soldier. "Fine!" Rex huffed as he moved the gun away from his hostage and shot the other three soldiers. They fell like pins in a game of bowling, toppling over and into one another as they fell. Rex then turned the gun back on the hostage and, before ending his life, gave him some sound advice. "Never trust who you work with unless they earn it." He said before pulling the trigger on that soldier too.
"Ten down. Ten to go." Rex said, half relieved but still determined. Maybe they were going to make it out of this one alive.
