Chapter 23

It hadn't taken long for Vulture to get both himself and Rex back to base and towards the nurses station. Rex remained calm and emotionless as Vulture assisted him into the medics room to get his stomach sorted. He didn't even often him a thanks, just a mere nod of his head, as Vulture left to make sure he could hand over all the information to the bosses as soon as possible.

"Took quite a beating this time, huh?" The doctor smiled as he removed Rex's shirt to reveal the large gash that ran across the side of his stomach.

"Explosion. No one else made it out." Rex said, still not showing the effects of the mission failing that whirred around in his brain and weighed heavily on him. He was the one who should have guided the group, instead he hung back and saved himself whilst everyone else was caught in the trap. How was it some random woman could see how suspect it looked but he couldn't? Rex's body tensed as he thought about it, his pulse and blood pressure rising dramatically.

"Sir, are you in pain? Do you need something?" The doctor asked as the machine he was wired up to alarmed loudly. Rex scoffed and shook his head, angry with himself for showing any sort of emotion.

"I need you to hurry up. I want to get out of here." He ordered, snapping at the doctor harshly. The doctor straightened in shock but didn't waste any time in doing as he was told. No sooner than he had started, the doctor had cleaned and sewn the gash shut and put gauze on it. Rex, once again, didn't bother to thank the person as he jumped off the gurney and headed back into base. He rushed to his locker and got changed into his normal attire, some jeans and a black T-shirt with an unbuttoned plaid shirt over the top, and headed out into the fresh air. On the way to the gate, he bumped into Vulture once more. Vulture offered him a smile and a wave but Rex cursed himself for allowing his colleague to feel like they'd bonded.

"Stay safe man. Bosses know it was a set up. It's no reflection of you, don't worry. They're looking into the source." Vulture caught him up with what had happened whilst he got patched up. "I'm off to my family's house now. How about you?" Vulture smiled at him again and Rex felt the disappointment rise onto his face.

"I'm going for a drink. Alone." Rex said, making sure he'd stayed very clearly that he didn't want company.

"Is that wise with the painkillers?" Vulture asked caringly , making Rex's skin crawl. He bit his lips together to make sure he didn't snap and say something he'd later regret. After all, this guy had saved him once. He deserved to be in the good books.

"Not taking them." Rex replies shortly. "Enjoy your night." He marched off before Vulture had a chance to answer but that pleased Rex. The less he had to socialise with people the better. He was recently starting to notice a decline in his attitude, he was starting to listen to people and open up and that was what he'd been training himself to avoid for so long. Was it possible to say it was because of that lady? Rex marches quickly to the nearest pub and took a seat at the bar, tucking his legs under the stool so his feet could hook around the footrest. He ordered a whisky and downed it quickly, ordering another before the bartender had a chance to even put the bottle back.

"You might wanna slow down there. It's still early." She said with a smile. Rex barely even reacted to her interaction, but he tapped the glass to tell her to refill it. As he downed that one, another person sat on the seat beside him and accidentally knocked elbows with him as he placed the glass back down. He shot a glare over to them, ready to snap at them about personal space but his mind - and face - fell blankly as soon as he laid eyes on her.

"Rex?" Millie asked, her brows furrowed as she looked around, wondering if he'd come here with anyone. "Thank God you're okay." She smiled. He looked at her a little longer, hesitating as he fought with himself as to whether to speak with her or not. She was one of the few people he assumed he could trust but he didn't want to go through the pain of losing her like he seemed to do with everyone. He'd barely been able to sleep since he'd had to fight his way out of that building to save Big Boss. "How's Diego?" She asked. He knew there was no way he could ignore that question. It was fair and kind of her to ask, the least he could do was answer.

"Good." He snapped, Millie feeling like she was back at the office when she first spoke to him over the radio. Everything was short and sharp. "I'm glad. Do you visit him much?" Rex's chest tightened as if he'd been caught out. Actually, he hadn't even been to visit him since it all happened. After the court case, and the words they'd shared outside of it, Rex had made the decision to leave him alone for a bit, knowing all that stuff would get brought up again. He couldn't be bothered to deal with that. Not now, not ever. The silence gave Millie her answer. She waited a moment before trying to get the conversation going again. "What are you doing here?" Rex sighed as he flagged the bartender down for a further refill.

"Drinking. Alone." He hinted, causing Millie to shift awkwardly.

"Right. I'm here on business actually." Her voice was tinged with nervousness, something Rex seemed to pick up on instantly. He didn't dare ask and start a conversation but he assured himself that he'd keep a close eye on her just to make sure she was okay. It was only fair, he'd convinced himself, baring in mind she'd saved his life. Another person came up to the bar, their hood pulled up shadowing their face as they took a quick look up and down the bar.

"Hey, Millie." It was a male voice, one Rex knew he'd heard before but he couldn't place where.

"That's me. Have a great night, Rex. Stay safe." She whispered as she touched his arm, quickly getting up and heading to a booth with the mystery man. Rex shuffled himself into a more comfortable position on the stool, making sure he was in earshot of Millie and her mystery friend. Despite constantly wanting to keep her out of his life, she'd seemed to managed to insert herself into it. This time, too, she may need his help. He wasn't going to rest until he knew she was safe.
