Chapter 25

Somewhat intrigued by the information Millie was giving him, Rex offered to walk her home. His heart and his mind were constantly battling, saying he should open up to her because she was such a sweet and honest person, but the other part trained to tell him that he needed no one and he could trust no one. He knew he could trust Millie, after all, she'd just signed herself up for a year of working for Flick just to save him and Big Boss. She didn't even know them. She had never met them before. She put those headphones on and Rex talked to her like a piece of dirt for the majority of the rescue mission, yet she helped them and would do it again.

"He's a powerful guy." Rex finally said after moments of silence whilst he argued with himself. "Flick, I mean." Millie scoffed at the understatement. Powerful? Flick was more than that. He was influential, he could hack into anything, if he wanted to screw with the government or the queen or king of a country he could do it without breaking a sweat. He was THE hacker. He was the guy. That's why he cost so much. Though from everyone else, he took money. From Millie, whom he had experience working with, he decided he would take the work from her instead.

"Too powerful. Someone you should never mess with." Millie said flatly, wrapping her arms around herself as the thoughts came back of everything she'd done for him before. The road was nearly silent as they walked down it, their footsteps making a little repetitive tune as it echoed across the houses. For every one step Rex took, Millie had to take two. Rex took in the changed in Millie's body language the moment she had to bring up Flick and he tensed.

"Are you safe?" Rex asked carefully. He didn't want to assume she was a helpless princess who needed a knight in shining armour but he knew something about this guy unsettled Millie. "Is he going to...?" Rex couldn't and wouldn't finish the sentence. For a moment Millie stopped in her tracks, stopping Rex too. The cold wind whipped past both of them as Millie turned to Rex with vulnerability obvious on her face.

"I'd rather not answer the question, Rex, than lie to you." She looked into his eyes as she spoke. He gritted his teeth, his nostrils flaring as the anger grew inside him. If he'd have known this information at the bar he'd have broken Flick's nose too. Remembering punching the guy on the street, Rex quickly looked down at his knuckles which were seemingly bloodstained but not painful in any way. "You okay? Rex?" Millie laid her hand on Rex's arm, her mere touch bringing him back to earth.

"Don't do it." Rex offered. His lack of emotion, his inability to let him feel and his training to prevent him from making bonds with anyone were all stopping him from saying what he truly wanted to. His mind ran with millions of words, sentences and things to do to get his point across, but he stood there just hoping three words would make the difference. Of course she wasn't going to listen to him, how stupid was he to think she would? All he'd done was be an asshole to her from the minute she had signed up to stay behind - for free - to help save his life. He'd finally said one part of that today, but that had taken days to muster up the courage to say. Millie let out a flat laugh.

"I appreciate your concern Rex, but I've signed up for it already. The moment you call him, your name is signed up to his repayments. I've used him once before, I knew what the terms and conditions were." She sighed as she looked down at the floor, starting up walking again as they headed to her abode.

"What are you going to be doing?" The question came out angrier than he wanted it to, or than it sounded in his mind. Millie was used to it by now though, after spending the first mission with Rex and his bad attitude.

"Not here." She said as she glanced around, making sure no one was listening into her conversation. This caused Rex to look around too. Were there people who were listening to her conversations? Or was Flick that good that he could be anywhere?

For a few more roads, they walked in a mostly comfortable silence. The odd car or motorbike would make some noise on the otherwise silent street until they stopped at a small one bedroom place. It was nice enough from the outside, a small gated house with a couple of chairs and table out on the front porch. The house was well kept from the outside, though Rex couldn't see much in the dark other than what was lit by the nearest street lamp.

"This is me." Millie said, seemingly more deflated than she had been earlier.

"It's a nice place." Rex offered, his mind screaming at him to stop trying to make conversation. Do NOT get attached to her. Look what happened to everyone else. Big boss is a ticking time bomb, you nearly lost him twice this week. Everyone you meet dies. You cannot handle more loss.
Millie finally let out a small smile.

"Thank you." She said as she turned to walk into her house. Her gut was screaming at her to ask him inside, to tell him about Flick so she could have at least one person looking out for her but she didn't want to get him involved. Equally, it was clear that he was so trained in his thought processes that he couldn't open up to let her in. She didn't want to date him, or kiss him, or anything. She just wanted to feel close to someone; by friendship or relationship. She had shut herself away after Flick and his payback from last time. Millie had needed to do unspeakable things, things so out of her character that it took weeks, months and years to get over it all and begin to live normally again. Flick had thrived with her beside him, which was terrifying to her. It meant her skills and knowledge were greatly used in bad ways. She knew that upsetting Flick would mean she'd end up in jail, or worse, dead. He had all the work she was involved in saved away for a rainy day, if for any reason she tried to double cross him. He was prepared for everything.
Millie turned once more to Rex. "I'm sorry about what happened today." Rex stood with a furrowed brow for a moment. What did happen today? Suddenly the raid and the explosions were back in his mind and unconsciously, he brought his hand to his stomach.

"I should have listened to you. I just wanted to follow orders. I'd got into enough trouble asking for you to be my eyes and ears." Rex let out a huff. Unbeknown to Millie, he too was screaming internally at himself to ask if he could come in. He wanted to talk to her more, get an understanding of this Flick guy and what she's going to be made to do. He could see the fear and the terror in her eyes and it reminded him all too well of someone he had tried to push to the back of his mind. Someone else he had lost. He didn't want to lose Millie, even though they barely knew each other. He knew she could handle the job of protecting him and Big Boss. She was, in fact, more than qualified for a job she had never done before, which got him wondering what secrets she was hiding.

"You did a great job. It was terrible sourcing. Whoever gave us that tip was either a moron or they were in on it. They probably got a healthy sum for setting us up." Rex looked straight into Millie's eyes. She'd used the word 'us'. His heart sped up a bit, which in turn meant the shitty responses were already lined up to shut him down from feeling anything.

"I still lost eight people." Rex responded angrily. Millie's shoulders drooped. "It wasn't good enough." She nodded, her lips pulled tightly together as if she were holding back emotion.

"Of course. Sorry Sir. Goodnight." Millie turned on her heels and headed into her house, the porch light flicking on as she stepped up to the front door with her key in her hand. She offered one last glance at Rex before she headed inside shutting her away from the real world, and Rex away from Millie.
Rex huffed to himself once more. How did he get himself into these situations? There was only one place he could think to go now. He probably wouldn't be welcomed, but he had to get some advice.
Big Boss was going to be so mad.
