Chapter 16: Vanessa Burling
I was in a state of sleeping but awake, when the door was pushed open with a soft knock. The not so quite whispers from the individual and Jordan bring me out of my sleep.
"Jordan?" My voice is slightly horse from crying last night, and sore from my injury. Talking was going to be a bit of a challenge for awhile.
"Hey how are you feeling? Is your neck still sore? I can get the nurse if you need me to, Actually I'l go get her now"
"Jordan, I'm ok" I soothingly say with a hoarseness to my voice.
"Careful, not to talk to much, might reopen your stitches" Noah catches my attention. I didn't even notice him. He looks away after a while, causing my heart to shatter slightly.
Even if we aren't to be, I would like to be friends. I liked our relationship, it was comforting and very trust worthy. The type of relationship you need to keep a hold of, because they are just so rare these days.
"So" Jordan grabs onto the chair nexts to me and sits down, hands reaching for my own, "Seems like we are staying here for a little while, our trip to White Crescent will be on hold for a moment"
"Oh"
"Jaime?"
A middle aged man reaches the end of my bed, the same man Jordan was speaking to before. His eyes hold wisdom and a young curiosity, but his hair shows his age, with the specks of white and grey.
"I am Alpha Jason Moore" I grab his out reached hang, he softly squeezes, "I understand you aren't in a talking mood so I won't bug you too long. I am offering up my services to you, but I do hope you will answer a few questions when you are feeling more... chatty"
Has he caught on? or just curious?
"Alpha?"A women with fiery red hair and crystal blue eyes bows softly to Alpha Moore, "You wished to see me?" She looks to be in her 30s but with werewolf ageing its hard to tell how old she really is. Her expression like that of a mothers, comforting but at the same time, she has that I see straight through you look in her eyes.
"Vanessa, yes" He waves her in and turns to me with a warm smile.
"Jaime, this is Vanessa shes going to take care of you while you are here in our care, we understand you are in a hurry to leave but I'm afraid you can't get on the road with those kind of injuries, and to be honest I have questions for you three I wish answered" I turn to the red head and try to smile softly, which she returns.
"Hi Jaime, I'm the current head counselor here in Redstone, getting into a rogue attack can be quite frightening. Especially when you are still quite new to our world yes?"
I nod, "I'll be by your side to help make sure you are on the right track to recovery, so we should probably get straight to it" Turning to the boys and Mr Alpha she points to the door; bows to her Alpha, "Please leave gentlemen, she must shower and if one of you boys can get her some food from the dinning hall down the stairs that would be wonderful, but as of right now I must help the young miss to the shower"
Before I can blink she is pushing my protesting brother out of the door. With a slam in his face Vanessa turns to me with a wide smile, "That sorts them out"
"Now" She grabs a few items from the corner dresser, before walking over to me, "As I said before my name is Vanessa, but please feel free to call me Ness"
"Jaime, or Jay" I Softly introduce myself.
"So I understand that you and the males wish to get to White Crescent Moon pack" She starts off, I nod meekly, a small part of me feeling slightly scared for what questions might be followed, but to my surprise she doesn't budge further on the subject. She instead asks me some questions regarding me personally, favourite colour and all that jazz. She ends up being really good company. Never pushing on obviously sensitive subjects, which I greatly appreciated.
Through out the day Ness helps me continuously, even to eat as to not strain my neck, she even reads to me. I felt childish immediately but after awhile I came to enjoy her lulling voice.
She becomes a support to my mental well being and physical being very quickly, day one and I'm already very comfortable with her. She's going to make the road to recovery a pleasant one.
"I think we should probably get you showered, then tucked back into bed, maybe try having some food?"
I simply nod, "Ok if you get undressed in the bathroom I'll meet you there and help you wash" I watch her walk over to a dresser of sort to grab some items. I walk into the bathroom but stop short at the shower. Not daring to move forward, or I'll be face to face with the mirror.
I feel slightly worried to be naked, not necessarily because Ness is here watching, but because I'll be seeing my injuries for the first time. Seeing that I have not yet made a move to get undressed Ness smiles encouragingly, "I have all the same things sweetie, also being naked in front of each other is a very normal thing for werewolves, I've seen my fair share of boobs"
"It's....It's not that..." I trail off, placing my fingers softly on my neck. We had to take the bandages off, so they wouldn't get wet while I showered. I would be seeing the injuries.
"Oh.... Oh honey"
The doctor said it would scar, what if the scar takes up the entire of my neck. I would be forever be marked with a horrific scar. I wouldn't be attractive. What if I do end up finding my mate, he takes one look and runs for the hills. Tears slowly slide down my cheeks.
"I don't know your story-" She catches my attention, drawling my eyes to hers.
"I don't know who you are Jaime. But I am hoping by the end of these next few weeks I will. I have some ideas, but I'm getting the feeling you are going to be in our world for a little while longer" She puts a soft hand on my cheek and shoulder, "You aren't in your world anymore, the thoughts clouding your mind don't apply here. This" Her hand on my should softly touches the skin of my neck, "Isn't a sign of weakness or a permanent ugly mark. This is a sign of your victory in life. A win. This shows the world you fought to stay alive, to be here today, that you didn't quit"
"Your skin is a map of your life Jaime, nothing that ever marks your skin is ugly, it's a story", She kisses my forehead, triggering the flood gates.
"A scar is beautiful, a scar is proof of your fight to stay alive. Your scar is beautiful, just like you are"
Is this how a mother is meant to talk to you about your insecurities
I think over Vanessa's words all night. They stick to my mind like glue.
'A scar is beautiful. A story' I hadn't thought of it that way before.
I always thought the suppressed memories were a ugly scar, an internal scar that I would forever carry with me. But maybe it could one day be nothing more then a story.
A story of the women I become.
A/N Thank you everyone for your continuous support
