The Kids Section

"You want my shift?" Jennie raised an eyebrow, "Why?"

"I just need the hours." I explained, "Plus, I feel like, I should train the newbie."

Evan looked at her hopefully, knowing she can't see him.

"He called in." She said.

"Oh." I said looking away.

Evan's face fell.

"Well," She said, filling us back up with hope, "I did want to go play with Sark."

"Doesn't he get mad when you don't call him his real name?" I laughed.

"Yeah, that's why I call him Sark." She laughed too, but it soon stopped, "Sure."

Evan cheered and I smiled, "Thank you so much."

She shrugged, "It's no problem, I know you're trying to save up some money for a new house."

"Okay," I said and stepped behind the counter, "I'll write down that you called in sick and that you couldn't make it."

I quickly wrote it down and Jennie swung her purse over her shoulder.

"Are you sure you can handle this whole library?" She joked.

"Yeah," I said rolling up my sleeves, "I'll be fine."

"As you wish." Jennie said, walking to the exit.

"Have a nice night with Scott!" I yelled to her. (I honestly don't know his real name)

She turned before she left and said, "I will. You have fun working by yourself!"

When she left, Evan whispered into my ear.

"You're not alone."

His breath was deadly cold on the back of my neck, so I whipped my head around and looked at him confused.

"Why'd you do that?"

He looked at me, genuinely confused, "Do what?"

"You whis-You know what, never mind," I said, "let's go find your friends."

I started walking to the main hallway while Evan followed me.

"Can we go to the kids section first?" Evan asked, "My friend, Brock, has been here the longest."

"Sure." I said, walking to the first doorway.

I turned on the light and was soon blinded by the bright colors of the books, small chair and tables, and walls. The one that really stood out was the wall with the fake sunset that went from a blush pink to a sun yellow to a jean blue.

"Okay," I said, walking onto the colorful, patterned carpet, "which ones his book?"

"I don't know," Evan said, "I didn't even know what book I was in."

"Are you seriously saying he could literally be in any of these books," I motioned to the whole room, "and you don't even know a general idea of where it could be?"

He made a thinking face and looked over to the biggest chair in the room, where adults read to the kids. It had an eagle on the back of it that seemed to fly with every rock.

We used to pay people to read to the kids, but now it's just a volunteer thing.

"Probably somewhere over there." He said pointing to it.

I sighed, "Let's get started."

We looked at all the books, trying to find the odd ball out. I even started putting them on the table, looking for the ones that don't have an author.

"God!" I exclaimed, getting out of the small child's chair, "This is impossible!"

I plopped in to the large chair. It rocked uncontrollably and nearly tipped too far back. I closed my eyes and put my head back, but I couldn't get comfortable. The cushion I sat on kept moving, and it seemed hard, like there was more wood on the bottom than usual.

"Something wrong?" Evan asked, noticing the my struggle with the chair.

"Yeah," I said standing up and turning around, "it keeps moving..."

My voice faded as I moved the cushion and discovered a neon green book who big, goofy letters that said "Moo Snuckel" with antlers coming out of the first o.

I picked it up and turned to Evan, "Is this him?"

Evan stood up and looked at the book as I turned and held it for him.

He shrugged, "Open it."

I nodded and opened it to a random page and got pushed back like before. I fell into the large chair that flipped back, making me flip to the floor on my knees.

"Y/n!" Evan yelled.

"Oh my gosh," a new male voice asked, "are you okay?"

I shakingly stood up and looked around, "Where..."

I turned a little to my left-where the light was the brightest-and the black dots from before created shoes. A small sewing needle quickly danced it's way around nothing, forming a pair of bright blue jeans. Yellow tulips glided down the light to the top of the jeans. Red roses soon follow and as the fell, the flowers began forming together to make a shirt with some kind of sunset on it. The black circles formed a part of sunglasses and rose petals lined the sides. The bright shined and soon and strong, white man stood in front of me.

"I'm Brock." He said, red covering his face.

"Brock!" Evan screamed and tackled the other male.

They awkwardly rolled on the floor, lazily fighting. I looked around and saw someone run down the main hall. I quickly ran to the door and stepped out into the hallway, not seeing anyone.

"What's wrong Y/n?" Evan asked as they got up.

I hesitantly walked back to, doing a double take, "I thought I saw someone run by."

"It was probably nothing." Evan shrugged.

I looked at them and Brock rested his sunglasses on the top of his brown, curly hair. Then I noticed that they're eyes were the same; grey.

"How'd you get stuck in a book?" I asked.

Brock looked at the large chair and back.

"Like fifteen or so years ago," He began, "I started working here and my first job was to read to the kids. Sooner or later, that became my only job. Anyway, I'd always read to them, and while I did, I tried to make them laugh by like acting out a scene or saying things in different voices. Well one day I got a bit carried away and pretty much screamed in the library. After my shift, I realized I forgot my phone in here so I walked back here and a book fell. When I picked it up, it didn't have a title, nor an author, so I opened it and fell back."

"And the same thing happened to Evan, and that's how you met?" I questioned.

They both nodded.

"Wait, does the same thing happen here?" I looked at Evan, "Where if I touch him, I see what he sees?"

They looked at each other and shrugged. Brock walked forward and put his hand out. I took it and the world spun again.

When it stopped, children ran all around the room. From 4-year-olds to 10-year-olds, they all played to together and danced and had fun. However, one kid stood out among the rest.

She had a pretty pink dress on with flowers covering it with shoes to match. The soft light bounced off her tan skin and she looked about seven or eight. But what really made me pay attention to her, was the fact that she had no hair on her body, and she had a little orange ribbon on her cheek.

"That's Susan." Brock said, noticing me pretty much staring at her, "She always had a big heart."

My eyes started to get watery, but I tried to keep my cool. I let go of his hand and waited for the world to go back to normal. The children's laughter died down to silence and the three of us looked at where Susan stood.

"Well," I said, a tear dripping from my eye, "I think we should go."

They nodded, tears threatening to fall.

We turned around and walked out to the hall. Then I heard a child laugh.

I turned around to look down the hall but I saw nothing.

"Did you hear that?" Brock asked.

I nodded. We were silent, waiting to hear it again. The whole library was soon filled with sound, but not of laughter; an old radio.

I looked at Brock and Evan and they seemed to be frozen.

"Brock?" I yelled, "Evan?"

Without warning, it all stopped. The music went to nothing and Brock and Evan started moving again.

"What just happened?" I said.

"I don't know," Evan said as he looked into the next room, "but I might know someone who does."

I looked at the room he was looking at: Mystery.
