The Romance Section

I walked in there and looked around. I swear to god, if the guy or guys I rescue it going to flirt with me the whole time, I'm putting him/them back in the book.

I started to walk around, "Is there one or two people in here?"

"I believe two." Evan said.

"Wait who?" Ohm asked.

I walked into a different part of the section and drained out their voices. I crept through the long, narrow aisles between the bookshelves. I honestly read a lot of romance novels, I just don't like to admit it.

I tried to look for anything out of place, but nothing looked obviously wrong. "Guy do you have any idea what at least one of the books look like?" I asked the boys as I turned the corner to see them looking under beanbag chairs and carpets.

The romance section is made for couples to "read together." There's not tables or regular chairs; just a bunch of love-seats and beanbag chairs. It is a cute idea, but every time I see a young, teenage couple walk in here, I get squeamish.

"One should be pink," Brock said then looked at Evan, "right?"

"I think so." Evan said in a I'm-not-too-sure kind of way.

I nodded and continued to look. After a good fifteen minutes of looking through the bookshelves with no luck, I walked into the main area where the boys were. Ohm was looking behind the curtains, Evan was opening the beanbags and looking through the small, styrofoam balls, Delirious was looking through the cushions on the love-seats, and Brock was on the moveable ladder against the bookshelf on the wall, looking at the top.

"Any luck?" I asked.

They all groaned and stood up straight.

"Why is this so ha-" Delirious stopped himself which made us all walk to him.

He lifted up one side of a love seat that used to be uneven and there stood a book with no author.

It was a black leather book with a white tiger in the middle of roaring on the front. Right above it in simple Times New Roman font, it said, "I AM WILDCAT."

"I am wildcat?" I questioned and looked at the boys, "Why do you all have weird titles?"

"It's our nicknames." Evan explained, "Its what we're most popularly known as."

I nodded and Delirious handed me the book.

"Wait," Brock warned while grabbing two beanbag chairs and carrying them to me, "let's put these behind you so it won't hurt that bad."

I thanked him once he was done, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. I opened the book and flew back as expected. I landed on the beanbags but shook my head and sat up.

"Hey, you're kind of cute." I heard someone say.

I looked around for the brightest light and stared at it when I found it. The black hearts and white feathers formed zebra like pants and and white shirt with an outline of something on it. Light, fuzzy brown heart-shaped forms of light formed hair and the feathers made a little helmet-like thing over it. Pink tulips grew from two places on the head and inside the outline on the shirt. I was blinded by the bright light once again and soon heard a loud thud. I blinked a few times and looked at the new man in the room. He was very tall, probably around 6"5 or so and had muscles. He had zebra print skinny jeans, a loose white shirt that said "I AM WILDCAT" above and hot pink kitten in a top hat. His light brown hair poked out the top of his white helmet with pink pig ears sotting on the top.

His bright, baby blue eyes roamed around the room and stoped on his friends.

"Hey!" He yelled running at them to hug them.

They did a huge group hug as I got up. Evan pulled away and introduced me to the new man, Tyler.

"Where's Arlan?" Tyler asked looking at our small group.

"We haven't found him yet." Brock said, "Do you know hat his book looks like?"

Tyler shrugged, "Pink."

"Cause that gives us a lot of information." Delirious said, rolling his eyes.

"Let's go, we don't have all night!" I exclaimed.

They nodded and started looking again. After another fifteen minutes, Tyler groaned in annoyance, "I swear it was over here!"

I looked where he was and he was literally looking at a wall. We all walked over there and looked at the wall. The wallpaper seemed to dip in a small space. I don't know why I did, but I poked my finger through it until I hit something. I dragged my figure across it, making me rip the rest of the dented wallpaper opened. I poked at the thing until it fell out into my hands.

It was a pink, paperback book that said "SilentDriodd". I raised an eyebrow, not because the book was in the wall, but because it didn't have a picture.

I turned to the group to double check if it was him and they smiled. I sighed and walked to the pile of beanbags again.

I closed my eyes and turned my head. I ran my finger down the side till it slide in between two pages. I opened the book.

Nothing.

I opened my eyes and knitted my eyebrows, "What?"

"Let me see it." Evan said as he walked to me and I handed him the book. He did the same as me and same thing happened.

"Why isn't it working?" Ohm said as him and the rest of the group walked to us.

That's when I heard church bells in the distance. I looked at the time: 12:00 am. I looked at the guys, "Does time matter?"

They all looked at the clock on the wall and Tyler said, "Ooh...that's what he meant by 12 by 12 each day."

They rest nodded in agreement and I raised any eyebrow, "Da hell does that mean?"

They looked at me and explained the guy they made the deal with said they had 12 hours a day to find their friends and they just found that out.

I nodded and took the book back from Evan. Then it got me thinking, "Did you pick up the book you came out of before we left the old section?"

He thought for a minute and said, "No...?"

I looked at the rest and asked the same question. They all said no and I explained that we needed to put the library back together and to make sure no one else grabs those other books.

Tyler grabbed his book and it was small enough to tuck it into his back pocket. We all turned to the door, but it was slammed shut.

"Lets have a little fun."

I was paralyzed. I knew who that was and it wasn't any of the boys. I started blinking but instead of clearing my vision, tears blurred my ability to see even more. I was finally able to move again when someone grabbed me.

The world spun and suddenly couples and some random boys and girls stared at me with worry and surprise.

Then he showed up.

I screamed as loud as I could, but he walked to me.

He made a pushing motion and whoever was behind me got pushed, but he didn't let go. We went back and had a hard landing on a beanbag chair. I looked down and saw the zebra print pants.

Everyone else was to the side, trying to moved but they seemed to be tied down by an invisible force. I looked back at him and he was looking straight at me and have one arm to his left out, holding the rest down. His other arm was pointed towards us.

His swampy green eyes still haunts me and his shit brown hair still continuously falls into his face. His pasty white skin made his dark appearance even worst.

This is the man I hate more than anyone.

This is the man that ruined my life.

This is the man that made me rethink every date I've been offered.

This is the man that made me think all men were like him for the longest time.

This is Damian Douglas. The man that swore he loved me, raped me, and left me to die.

That night was the worst night of my life:

I just got home from work and opened the door to see Damian. He turned around and forcefully pushed me against the door and no matter how loud I screamed that night, no one came.

He fell asleep soon after and I called the cops. The moment they opened the door, he woke up, realized what was happening and grabbed his gun. He refused to put it down, so the cops shot him to death, but he shot me before he left.

I almost died and I lost my virginity to a fucking alcoholic rapist.

"Just keep him away." I cried silently.

My breathing hitched when Tyler held me tighter. I felt something that I haven't felt in a long time: Safe.

I blinked and blinked and as he got closer, he got hazier and eventually, he disappeared. I started breathing somewhat normally as the rest of the group ran to us. I took a deep breath before Tyler stood up, picking me up with him.

I looked around the room one more time. Couples of all kind were huddled together and freaked out about what happened. The world spun again as Tyler let go of me and soon they were all gone.

I looked at everyone and they were all staring at me, expecting me to explain what just happened.

"I...." I said, hesitating to finish, "I-I'm sorry you had to see me like that."

Brock grabbed me and hugged the life out of me, "We should be sorry. You're trying to help us and you clearly didn't like whoever that was and you had to face them."

I sighed as the rest joined the hug and apologized. It was awkward considering I didn't know them and I hate when a lot of people have their attention on me, but I was safe. They made me feel secure and protected and I don't know why.

They all let go and I said, "Let's go clean up the library. I'll go home when Adam gets here and come back when the night shift starts."

They all nodded and we stuck together as Evan, Ohm, Delirious, and Brock got their books and we picked up the ones we left out on the tables.

We headed to the front desk and talked about how they go stuck in the books.

"A bunch of my friends and I were in the library and we were messing with the librarians  by putting speakers in certain sections and playing some inappropriate sounds." Tyler explained, "I knew it was a dick move, but I was 13 and they were the 'cool kids'."

"I would've kicked your ass." I said, making everyone laugh.

"Anyway," he continued, "when Arlan and I went to place one in the romance section, I thought about putting one underneath one of the love seats while Arlan was planning on putting one inside that whole in the wall. We saw the books, met each other in the middle and opened them at the same time."

I glanced at his book and remembered where it was. I looked back at the group and Tyler turned to the two from the mystery section, "I know how Brock and Evan got stuck in the books, but how did you two get stuck?"

Delirious said, "I was messing around and saw the book above the doorway so I got it down and opened it."

"That's kind of what happened to me," Ohm said, "I knocked the piano seat over and the book fell out. I opened it and got sucked in."

The door opened and I saw Adam walk in, soaking wet.

He took off his hat, saw me and said, "Y/n? I thought you were working later?"

I nodded and grabbed my coat, "Yeah, I took over Jennie's shift. You're stuck with the newbie."

He rolled his eyes as he walked behind the desk, taking my spot. "Are you doing the night shifts know?"

I glanced at the boys, "Just for a little. I need to save up money for a new heating system in my car." I hate lying but I can't exactly say I'm helping out ghosts nor can I say I want to just for the hell of it.

He nodded in understanding and asked, "Well, I'll see you later?"

I nodded as I went to the door, "Oh, and there's a bunch of books in my basket, I checked those out."

He turned and saw all the books in the basket labeled with my name. He nodded and turned back. I waved at him and he waved at me. The moment he turned away, to waved at the boys and they waved like idiots back.

I tried not to laugh and turned and walked out the library.

~

It wasn't raining like yesterday, but the mood was like the sky: dark and cold. I walked into the library that was nearly filled. The newbie was at the desk. I rolled my eyes as I walked up to him.

He's not young or the worst looking guy, but he's way too loud to work in a library. He was hired about a week ago and still doesn't know the password to the computers. He has brown hair, but it can easily be mistaken for blonde in certain lighting. He has dull blue eyes that matched his shirt.

"Hey Scotty." I greeted him. He looked up form his comic book and stood up due to that it was me and not Adam or Jennie.

I won't let him get away with stuff unlike the others; I make him pick up his own mess.

"H-Hey Y/n," he said as he situated himself to look professional, "I didn't know I would be working with you today."

I took my coat off and hung it up. I turned to him and said, "Yeah I'm working all night tonight."

He knotted his eyebrows, "I was on the schedule for the night shift tonight."

I nodded, "I was planning on asking Jennie for her spot again."

"Jennie's sick." He said, "Mrs. Williams said that she wanted me to work the night shift to see if I do better."

I awkwardly scratched the back of my neck and asked, "Can I have your shift then?"

He sighed. He was thinking about it because he clearly hates this job but he also wanted money. "I don't know." He said.

"Y/n?" I heard Adam say, making me turn around to face him, "Back already?"

I looked at the time, 11:32. I didn't realize I was so early. I looked at him and shrugged, "I'm tired of riding in a cold car."

He smiled, "What were you two talking about?"

"I want the night shift, because it's easy hours but Mrs. Williams gave it to Scotty." I answered.

"I can call her and see if she'd be okay with it." Adam said.

"No." Scotty said earning both our attention, "I-I really need the money a-and I want to be able to actually prove myself with this job."

I inhaled sharply and looked at Adam. He shrugged, "Well, maybe you two could both do it. I mean, if we call Mrs. Williams, you'll both still get paid."

I bit my lip, but stopped when I looked at him, "I can do that."

He nodded, "Me too."

Adam nodded and went to the back to use the phone. I looked at how busy the library was today. A couple with a few books came to the desk. Since I don't start work for another thirty minutes, I decide to waste time, trying to look for the five ghosts I set free last night.

I checked the kids section first, expecting to see Brock, but had no luck. I went to the mystery section next and didn't see Delirious nor Ohm. I knotted my eyebrows while I looked into romance and didn't see Tyler. I jogged to the old section and was, again, greeted by living people.

"Where the hell..." I whispered under my breath while backing away from the door.

I walked back to the main area and didn't see them. Where did they go?

"Hey Y/n." Adam called for me, snapping me out of my thoughts. I walked to him and he said, "Mrs. Williams said it was fine because he still needs some training, but you may not be paid as much due to the fact that you asked so late."

I nodded, "I can deal with that."

He smiled, "You wanna do me a huge favor?"

I groaned, "What?"

He grabbed the basement keys off the hook and handed them to me, "We got a new shipment for the Percy Jackson books and they're in the basement. Can you grab like two of each?"

I smiled and took the keys, "This feels like a side quest."

He laughed, "What's the main quest?"

"To find my will to live." I joked and walked to the basement door.

I unlocked it, pushed the door open, and walked down the stair, listening to my footsteps and it slamming behind me. When I got to the bottom, I turned on the lights and looked around. All the boxes where labeled but I never realized how many extra books were in here. Boxes towered over each other I started to read the labels out loud.

"Fault in Our Stars...Almost Perfect...Conjured...Hunger Games...Diary of a Wimpy Kid..."

I stopped reading and looked around. I swear I just heard shuffling. I shook it off, thinking maybe it was me.

I turned back to the pile of boxes and met eyes. I gasped and back handed whoever was in front of me, not even processing who it was.

"Ow!" Delirious yelled. I then heard laughing so I turned and saw the other four.

"She just bitch-slapped your ass!" Tyler howled with laughter.

He stood up straight, holding his face. "What the hell do you do in your spare time woman? Back hand random people?"

I laughed and put my hand in front of him, "I'm sorry."

He jokingly glared at me then laughed it off. "What are you looking for?" He asked.

"Percy Jackson books." I said.

"Oh, that's over here." Evan said walking to a box near the wall.

I walked over there with him and grabbed an empty box on the way. I put two of each book in the box and headed back up stairs. After locking the door, I gave the box the Adam and put the keys back up.

"Y/n, can you help me?" I heard Scotty ask.

I walked to him. He had a customer and he was hold the scanner and a book. "What's up?" I asked.

"The book doesn't have a barcode," he said, "what do I do?"

I pointed to the ID number on the tag, above the destroyed barcode, and said, "You have to enter this into the computer.

He nodded and started typing. I looked over at my ghostly friends and they were sizing him up. I raised an eyebrow but didn't focus on them for too long. Instead I looked at Scotty. Why are they sizing him up? He's not intimidating, far from it actually.

He finished checking out the book for the customer and looked at the time, "Ready to start our shift?"

~

It was about 9:00 when the last customer left. I looked at Scotty and said, "This is where you just sit around and do nothing. I'm gonna go pick up anything out of place in the sections."

He nodded and sat down. I was about to enter the long hallway when Scotty said, "Y/n, wait!" I turned and he came running at me with Arlan's book. I widened my eyes and he said, "Where are you finding these books? This one doesn't have a author and the other ones don't even have titles."

He opened the book and the whole world just went into slow motion. "Scotty, no!" I yelled as he opened it and us both flying back from the force. I landed on my back and rolled to my side, groaning in pain.

"Are you two okay?" A new, somewhat deep voice asked. He had a light Mexican accent, light enough to where you can barely tell he has one.

I looked up at the light, but didn't see anything form. Instead, Ohm covered the light with his face and asked, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah." I grumbled and I sat up.

"What the hell?" Scotty screamed, pointed at a guy in white shorts and pink shirt. I sighed when he looked at me and pointed behind me, "Who the hell are they?"

I stood up and said, "Scotty, this is Evan, Brock, Delirious, Ohm, and Tyler." I said and I pointed to them, "Guys, this is Scotty." I motioned to the poor man laying on the ground.

"What the hell is going on Y/n?" He yelled as he stood up, pointing at them again, "Where did they come from?"

I sighed and we all explained what's been happening at the library after dark. Apparently because I opened some books and he opened another, we both see them now.

He looked at me and said, "This is why you wanted the nightshift?"

I nodded, "Pretty much."

He stood up, "So what do we do now."

I looked at the clock: 9:47. "We look for the rest."
