It really is a matter of choice, in my opinion. Even when life starts lifing, my first instinct when faced with challenges has always been to laugh at my problems. The bigger the challenge, the bigger the laugh.

Of course, laughter doesn't solve everything, but with a bright mood (and a good book), facing even the biggest struggles can be a tiny bit les daunting.
