Chapter3-Parental Conservatorship
February 17th, 2012
It’s a few days later. The remaining 7th Anthem members were getting ready to return to London. They couldn’t go visit Justin at the hospital, as only family members may see him.
But one morning, as Bailey was packing up for London, she got a call from the hospital where Justin was staying in. It was a doctor, and told her that Justin wants to see her.
Bailey had mixed feelings about this. After Justin admitted he doesn’t remember anything from early 2011 and onward, she didn’t want to have anything to do with him. In addition to that, she realized that she was in love with a total stranger. At the same time, there was a small part of her that still cared about him.
She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do, but she knew she wanted answers. So she grabbed her rental car keys, but she was stopped by the other members. Alyson asked, “Bailey, where are you going? We have to leave for London in a few hours.”
She replied by lying, “I need to get something. I’ll be back within an hour or so.”
With that, Bailey left before anyone got a chance to question her. She soon arrived at the hospital. She met with the doctor, and he led her to Justin’s room. Justin was released from mental evaluation, and was recovering in a room.
She hesitantly entered his room. She saw him, relaxing while watching TV. Once Justin saw her, he turned off the TV. He said tiredly, “You’re here.”
Bailey said awkwardly, “Yeah, I’m here. So…how are you?”
“I’m still sore, but I’m getting better. You?”
“I’m not sure.”
“What do you mean?”
Bailey sighed as she explained, “I mean, I’m not sure what to do with you. I don’t know the guy in front of me. I thought I did, but as it turns out, I don’t. You don’t even remember what you did last year.”
Justin thought for a moment, and asked, “What do you want to know?”
Bailey answered firmly, “Everything. I want to know what your life was like as a kid in England. I want to know why you were determined to be some alternative version of Andrew. I want to know what you have been doing in private during the UTurn years. I want to know why you blacked out last year. I want the entire truth, even if I have to be sitting the entire day.”
Justin looked at her intently, then suddenly a man and a woman walked into his room. Justin immediately recognized them as he asked, “Mum? Dad? What are you two doing here?”
Bailey turned, and saw his parents there. Mrs. Harrison replied sternly, “We’re here to take you back to Boston.”
Justin asked, “Why? What’s going on?”
Mr. Harrison said, “We have obtained conservatorship on you after your breakdown.”
The mother chimed in, “It’s been something we’ve been trying to do for a couple of months. And after reading and watching what you’ve been doing recently, a judge just granted us this chance.”
That shocked both Bailey and Justin. That made Justin’s future in the band even more uncertain. Bailey asked, “Will Justin be able to rejoin 7th Anthem?”
The mother replied, “We don’t yet.”
The father added, “Bailey, we’ll think about his future in the band. In the meantime, Justin, get your things. We’re taking you to a hotel, and we’ll be staying there for a couple of days. Then we leave for Boston.”
With that, the parents left the room. Justin laid there, stunned. He wasn’t sure what to say. His future in the band is bleak. He wants to rejoin, but he’s not sure what’s going on between him and the members.
The he faced Bailey, and said, “Go tell the other about this.”
She said, “I have to. I think we might have to look for replacements.”
“I hope I don’t get replaced. I really want to rejoin the group.”
Bailey looked at him bitterly, and said, “I don’t know about that. We all feel like we had a stranger within the band. None of us know who you are.”
“But I’m a founding member of 7th Anthem. I’ve been in the band since the very beginning. I’m very popular with the fans. I’m also a lead singer.”
“I get this band is important to you, but you’ve done some things that caused a huge rift between you and the members. I wouldn’t doubt they want you out.”
That made Justin upset. He wasn’t exactly sure what he did, but it must’ve been bad enough to where his bandmates don’t want him around anymore.
Feeling worried, Justin said, “Once I’m in the hotel, I’ll call you. I’m going to tell you everything about myself. In the meantime, try to convince the others about not kicking me out. If my parents won’t let me rejoin, then you can go ahead and replace me. But if they let me rejoin, please try not to get me kicked out. I’m sorry for whatever I did to the others. I really am.”
Bailey stared at Justin. She wanted to believe he meant every word he said, but after being in love with a liar, she’s doesn’t know what to believe. She just nodded her head, and left his room.
About an hour later, Bailey returned to the hotel where the 7A members were getting ready to leave from. They saw her enter the room. Andrew asked, “Where were you? You’ve been gone for a few hours.”
Bailey said, “Either you all leave for London without me, or we stay for a few more days.”
The members were confused. Andrew asked again, “Why would we do either one of them?”
“I visited Justin. His doctor called me to tell me that Justin wanted to see me.”
The members were not too happy when she said that. Alyson asked, “What did Justin want from you?”
Bailey replied, “Actually, I demanded from him the truth about his life and who he is. He looked like he was going to tell me everything, but his parents came in. They told him they have conservatorship over him, and they’re going to take him back to Boston. That means his future in this band is uncertain.”
Andrew said sourly, “His future was already at risk when he screwing me over.”
“Andrew,” Alyson scolded him, and said to Bailey, “What else did Justin say? Did he tell everything about himself afterwards?”
Bailey replied, “No. Instead, he asked me to talk to you guys about not kicking him out if his parents allow him to rejoin. If not, then we have to either replace him, or we become a 6-piece.”
That shocked the members. They didn’t think Justin would have to be replaced. But then again, no one thought about a possibility of losing a founding member. No one predicted that a member who joined right before they auditioned for New England’s Teen SuperStar to be replaced.
For Andrew and Alyson, as the leaders of the group, they were shocked. As the two of the four founding members, they took Bailey to their room.
Once they went in, Alyson asked, “Are Justin’s parents still in Manchester?”
She answered, “I don’t see why not. Why would they suddenly leave when they’ve apparently booked a hotel room for them and Justin?”
Andrew and Alyson thought for a moment. Then Andrew said, “Okay, Bailey, we’re going to find Justin’s parents, and we’re going to talk to them about Justin’s future.”
She asked, “So you’re not going to kick him out if his parents allow him to rejoin?”
Alyson said, “We may not know who Justin is, and we’re still reeling from what he did, but he is a part of this band. He joined when we asked him to. He became a very important in the group. We shouldn’t kick him. We should, at least, hear what he has to say.”
Andrew said, “I have to agree with Alyson. Let’s first go find his parents. Then you have to talk to Justin.”
Bailey said, “Okay, we’ll do this.”
So with that, the three founding members left their suite to find Justin’s parents. As they went to the lobby, they Bailey saw the parents. She, Andrew, and Alyson walked up to them.
When the couple saw the three, Mrs. Harrison asked, “What is it?”
Alyson replied, “Bailey told us what’s going on between you and Justin. Since he’s a founding member like Bailey, Andrew, and I, we need to know what his future in the band will be.”
Andrew chimed in, “We’re all for Justin getting better, but we have to know you won’t force him out of the band.”
The parents exchanged looks, and soon face the three. Then the mother said, “Justin just had a mental breakdown. He nearly killed himself, and he put your lives in danger. Do you really want him in the band?”
Andrew said, “Is he on medication? What does he have?”
“He had a blackout, and he’s schizophrenic. He is on medication, but because he used drugs, he’s being closely monitored.”
“Okay, I get Justin will be on the medication for life. I’m all for negotiating for Justin’s return to health and the band. I’d say give him 30 days. If he’s well enough to return, let him rejoin. But hire someone to keep an eye on his mental health and his intake of his medication.”
The parents excused themselves to talk amongst themselves. After a few minutes, they returned to the three founding members. Mr. Harrison said, “Okay, we’ll accept your proposal. If Justin makes significant progress within 30 days, we’ll let him rejoin his band. But if he doesn’t improve, or gets worse, we will not allow him to rejoin.”
Mrs. Harrison added, “And if we do allow him to return, we will oversee his finances, and we will hire an in-house nurse to keep an eye on his health. Is that understood?”
Andrew said, “It is understood.”
With that, the Harrisons walked away. The future of Justin’s return to 7A is now in the hands of his parents. Will he recover enough for him to be reinstated? Or will he get replaced?
