Dallas was in denial.
He has been for a while now. He never expected to fall in love, let alone, fall in love with you. He really thought nothing of it, but a few weeks ago, you had done something that made Dallas make that realization. At first, he thought that it was a small crush, but the more he saw you, the more he started to realize, it was love.
Dallas was never the best at love. Every girl he would want to get serious with winds up leaving him. He knew that he didn't want to lose you as a lover, nor a friend. So he kept his feelings to himself. Better yet, he even acted as if he hated you.
You would have lunch with the gang everyday, but Dallas has been acting different lately. He wasn't sitting next to you. He wouldn't respond to you, even when you knew that you were close enough for him to hear you. Overall, he just ignored you. You had to admit, you missed the playful banter you two would have with each other.
Something wasn't adding up, and you weren't going to give up until you figured out what was going on with Dallas.
"Come on Angel get out from underneath him!" Ponyboy cried out, his eyebrows furrowed in seriousness. You grunted as Sodapop kept you pinned down to the ground with his knee. His sparkling white teeth gleamed down at you as he smiled in amusement. "You got this!!!"
Some sort of energy sored through your veins, and with that motivation, you shimmied your way out from underneath Sodapop. Sodapop was caught by surprise and fell over. You scrambled up to your feet and immediately tackled your good friend back to the ground. You pinned him to the ground by the shoulders.
Two-Bit slammed the floor three times, indicating that you had won that match. You jumped up to your feet, cheering in response. Ponyboy clapped along with a wide smile. Later on, Johnny was slipping Ponyboy his five dollars. Ponyboy smiled while looking through his cash.
"Alright, I think that leaves just Angel and Dally," Darrel said, standing up off of the couch. You glanced over at Dallas who was shaking his head. You lifted your eyebrow. Dallas never turned down the opportunity to play rough with you. "Dally, are you ready?"
"I'm not wrestling Angel."
"That's something I never thought I'd hear," You said, lowering yourself back onto the ground, sitting beside Sodapop. "I'll even sit down to give you an advantage."
"Are you just afraid that you'll ruin her pretty face?"
Sodapop's comment made everyone in the room chuckle, all except Dallas. Dallas sternly glared at Sodapop.
"I didn't say that Angel was pretty," Dallas snapped harshly. You lowered your eyes to the ground. "She's pretty damn ugly if you ask me."
The room fell silent and your swung your eyes up to meet with his dirt brown ones. You had to admit, as much as you tried to stay tough, that comment genuinely hurt your feelings.
"That was a little uncalled for Dal," Johnny spoke softly, shaking his head. "Angel ain't ugly."
You inhaled a deep breath. You climbed back up to your feet and started heading for the door. Dallas just remained seated, continuing to glare at you making your exit. The Curtis brother's called your name, asking for you not to leave, but you just left in silence. As the door shut behind you, Sodapop jumped up to his feet. Everyone in the room started approaching Dallas.
"What the hell was that Dally?" Sodapop called out angrily. "We all know damn well that you think Angel is beautiful! What is wrong with you?!"
"Thanks to you, we don't got any competition to wrestle with," Ponyboy stated, crossing his arms. "I thought you liked Angel. What's up with callin' her the opposite of what she is?"
"She'll be back," Dallas said with a nonchalant shrug, completely dodging the question. "She's tough. It's fine."
Dallas believed that you were a tough girl, but in reality, you were sensitive and soft when it came to words. You would take words personally, and what Dallas told you was without a doubt taken personally. You just didn't want to cry in front of the gang. They've never seen you cry, and you thought if they did, they would judge you for your sensitivity. The only thing that made things worse was that Dallas was your best friend in the gang.
He was the one who you trusted the most. He would be there for you, and you thought that he cared about you, but apparently not. A few hours passed, and you still hadn't returned to the Curtis's household. It worried Dallas for sure. The gang were all at the dinner table, but the room felt empty without you in it. You were the one who would have the funniest stories to tell. You would entertain everyone, but without you, it was just silence and eating.
"I hope Angel is okay," Sodapop said, taking a drink out of his glass of water afterwards. "She hasn't been back for three hours, and it's dark outside."
"You know what, I'm going to go find her," Dallas said, scooting out from the table. "I need to know that she's alright."
Dallas excused himself from the table before rushing out the door. He made it outside of the gate and turned to see a familiar figure not too far from him. It was you. Dallas started approaching you, but froze as he saw the all too familiar rich-looking snobs lurking behind the bushes that you were about to pass.
You were holding yourself as you were walking down the street, not paying attention to your surroundings. Dallas shouted your name, but you were too far away to hear him. All of a sudden, the group of Soc's jumped out from the bushes. The main leader slapped his hand over your mouth, preventing you to scream.
You still attempted to scream, but you were easily defeated as more of the Soc's began to jump onto you, taking you down to the ground. Dallas grunted in anger and began sprinting up to the scene. You were squirming in their possession, trying to fight back, but it was useless. There were too many of them. As the leader pinned you to the ground, he pulled out his pocket knife.
He held it up against your neck. "Are you enjoying being so helpless?"
He mocked you as you continued to try and call for help, but it just made the guys holding you down, grip onto you tighter. You squeezed your eyes shut as the pain began to kick in. The laughing of their voices echoed through your head, but it was soon cut off by the voice that made you smile. It was Dallas.
The hands that were once holding you down had let go. You cracked one open, only to see them getting punched above you. You opened both eyes as they both fell backward. Dallas hovered over you and glared down at you in worry.
"Angel, are you okay?" Dallas asked, putting out his hand for you to take. You took his hand and he lifted you up. "They didn't hurt you, did they?"
As Dallas was checking around your face, as well as your body for bruises, you just stared at him in bewilderment. Once Dallas knew that you were alright, he nodded at himself in confirmation. He fixated his eyes with yours and saw your puzzled expression.
"What is it Angel?"
"Nothing."
You brushed past Dallas and started heading toward the household of the Curtis's. You were ready to go back to the house, but you weren't quite ready to forgive Dallas for what he said. He hadn't apologized, so you weren't ready to thank him. You were still having sour feelings toward him for that comment.
Dallas followed right behind you, but you sped up as he started walking with you. You both walked in silence until you reached the gate. You opened up the gate, but Dallas slammed it shut right back. Dallas gripped onto your shoulder and forced to face him. You rolled your emerald green eyes as you came face to face with him.
"Look Angel, I'm sorry, alright?" Dallas apologized sincerely. You sighed and looked him in the eyes. As his eyes pierced into your eyes, you could see that he genuinely meant it. "I just was actin' like a jerk because I love you."
You froze as that word came out of his mouth. "You l-love me?"
"Yes, and I know that it's weird, but I don't want nothin' between us to—"
You cut Dallas off with your lips pressing against his. Dallas was taken by surprise, but slowly melted into your kiss as the kiss prolonged. He had gotten his answer, and he couldn't be more happy about it. Dallas softly ran his fingers through your messy brown hair as he continued the kiss. From the window of the household were his friends smiling and laughing for his buddy who had finally gotten what he wanted.
