Chapter 21: The Awkward Dinner.
"This is a bad idea. I should just leave." Jordan blabbered.
We were currently sitting in Lenny's car which was parked in front of Rosalind's house.
Derek called us and invited the three of us, but Brianna thought that it was a good idea to also let Jordan tag along because it was about time that the McAllister's met the man who saved their daughter's life.
Jordan was a nerve wreck. He was afraid that he would be judged or that they won't like him.
Him acting nervous was only human. No one blamed him. The truth of us that deep down even we were anxious.
"You'll be fine. You got us, man." Lenny patted his back.
"Are you having a panic attack?" I furrowed my brows and asked because his actions indicated that he was having one.
"If shortness of breathe, my heart beating so fast that it will tear through my chest and blurry vision counts as a panic attack, then yes, I am having one." He answered.
"What are you so afraid of?" Brianna questioned.
"I am a part of a biker gang who saved their daughter after she was raped. I am scared of a lot of things." He sarcastically retorted.
"There's no need to be mean." Brianna mumbled under her breathe.
"Look at me." I ordered, sitting on the edge of the backseat. "Focus on your breathing. You have nothing to worry about, okay? You have us and we will make sure that they know that you are an amazing person beneath all the flaws. They'll appreciate you." I tried consoling him.
His breathing evened and he stopped fidgeting with his jacket. Lenny looked at me and flashed me an impressed smile.
Once Jordan had completely calmed down, we all got out of the car.
Lenny rang the doorbell, behind him was me and Brianna standing together and our hands linked together. Jordan who was praying to god to make him invisible was standing the last.
Derek opened the door and his dull face brightened up as he saw our faces. He did a bro shake with Lenny and hugged me and Brianna.
"Jordan?" Derek whispered.
"You know him?" Brianna asked.
"Yeah, Rosalind mentioned him." He answered. "I didn't think you guys knew him."
"We became friends after funeral. He is an amazing guy." I stated, giving Jordan a sweet smile.
"Come in, please." Derek politely invited him in.
Jordan looked almost relieved now.
"Good thing I already made extra lasagna." Mrs. McAllister chirped. "I am so happy everyone arrived early. Now we have time to catch up."
"You remembered!" Brianna exclaimed in delight.
"How could she forget your love for her lasagna." Mr. McAllister joined.
"Thank you so much for inviting all of us." Lenny thanked them.
"Oh hush, this was overdue," said Mrs. McAllister.
We all were then led to the kitchen, where the table was already set. Even though there weren't many different dishes, it still looked like a feast.
Brianna sat to my right and Jordan to my left. Lenny was in front of me and to his right was Derek. Mr. and Mrs. McAllister sat opposite to me.
The ravishing smell of lasagna had me hungrier.
"I can't eat this. It's too much cheese." Brianna whispered.
"Oh come on! This is your favourite. I'll help you work out later." I whispered back. "You gotta enjoy the food, Bri."
She gave me a hesitant look whereas I returned an assuring nod, boosting her confidence.
We all passed the lasagna after serving ourselves. Mr. McAllister also poured a glass of one of his best wines.
I took a spoonful of lasagna and put it in my mouth. The cheese melted and the spicy taste mixed with a tinge of sweetness made me fall in love with this dish all over again.
"This is delicious, Mrs. McAllister." I complimented her.
A few minutes into the dinner, Mr. McAllister finally decided to begin a conversation.
"So, how did you exactly know my daughter?" He questioned Jordan.
"I found her unconscious at the bar she had gone too." He honestly replied.
"Oh yes. She never has mentioned you to anyone before, but she did talk about a really nice guy." He spoke. "Thank you so much, son."
"It's not a problem at all." Jordan politely smiled.
"Were you happy?" I asked, not caring if it was a sensitive topic. I just had to know.
"With what?" Mr. McAllister asked back.
"With Rosalind's decision of keeping the child."
"Not in the beginning. It was a very naive decision, but in the end we all agree to get it over with."
"That doesn't sound like you accepted the kid." Brianna joined in.
"Rose had a pure heart filled with love. A do-gooder. That is the reason why she kept the child. As her parents, we just supported her even though we didn't really like it." Mrs. McAllister replied.
"But that isn't fair! She supported you because she loved you, not because it was her duty. You'll don't sound like ideal parents right now." Brianna clapped back. Her tone was annoyed and she was clearly pissed.
I elbowed her before she could go on any further. The tension had taken in charge and it dominated the entire room.
Everyone was quiet. Derek looked at me for help, but I was clueless.
I cleared my throat and said something, hoping that it would change the mood back to nice. "Let's keep this dinner happy."
"But-"
"Not buts. Just eat your food and talk about good memories." I stated.
"You were the one who brought it up." Brianna muttered.
"Yeah. But I wasn't meaning to attack them. It was just a curious question." I whispered back to her.
"So, did Rosalind umm...leave a suicide note?" Lenny changed the topic.
This dinner was not only for us to meet together and chitchat. It was also a small mission to do our own little investigation.
Kelly had given us tips on how to go about interrogating and not sound suspicious.
I gave Lenny a sharp look, warning him to not mess it up. We could not risk getting exposed.
"Not really." Derek answered. "We searched the entire house but didn't find any note."
"That's weird. Knowing Rosalind, she should have definitely left behind a note." Lenny retorted. "Did you guys search every single place?"
"Yeah. Why?" Derek asked.
"I didn't get a chance to say goodbye. I was hoping that she wrote it." Lenny spoke, guilt masking his face.
"Hey, it's fine. She never really stopped loving you. If it is any consolation, after dinner I'll look again in her room. Maybe I might have missed a spot." Derek comforted him.
After dinner, we all moved back to the living room where Brianna and Mrs. McAllister were serving deserts. She made an apple pie, which was my favourite.
A warm feeling spread throughout my heart and it felt really good knowing that she remembered every little memory that we shared.
I could see that both of the McAllister's were hiding the pain. This dinner was one of the reasons to make them feel happiness again.
After everyone had their pie, we started sharing the good memories of Rosalind.
Derek had gone off to her room to search for her note. I would be very disheartened because that was the only thing that gave us an upper hand with the killer.
I wished that he was sloppy enough to forget it.
"Do you remember the time when Rosalind thought that there was a monster under her bed?" Brianna asked me, but both Mr. and Mrs. McAllister started laughing.
Jordan looked at me, clearly lost.
I briefly explained it to him that it was a prank that Derek planned.
He sneaked in her room and hid beneath her bed. He purposely made scary noises during the middle of the night. Brianna and I just stopped her from checking.
She was super afraid after that and refused to sleep alone.
Finally we all decided to come clean and told her that it was no one other than Derek.
Derek was the monster under her bed.
After knowing the entire story, Jordan too let out a chuckle.
"Also the time whe-"
"I FOUND IT." Derek's happy voice stopped me, mid sentence. "I found her suicide note. It was under her bed."
My heart sank. I wasn't comforted at all because she was forced to write this note.
But if it made her parents and her brother find some closure, I was more than happy to play along.
Lenny and Jordan both gave me a worried look. I warned them to not mess it up and just pretend to be happy.
"Read it out loud." Brianna cheerfully suggested.
Derek opened up the note and began,
I see that you found the letter. I'm extremely sorry that I had to leave all of you. It was never my intention, but I was really tired. I felt like my energy was being sucked from my body. I couldn't be there for anybody anymore. I just needed to start my own life, but it was disheartening to see how nobody believed that I had it in me. I promise to watch all of you from wherever I go. Let Brianna and Valerie know that I forgive them. Also, tell Lenny that I love him. And of course it goes without saying that I'm thankful to live this long. Derek, give mom and dad a long hug on behalf of me.
- Love Rosalind.
Even though it was a fake suicide note, it didn't seem like it. It felt like it was genuinely Rosalind writing those words, communicating with us. Tears welled up in my eyes.
Everyone had their face buried. No one had the courage to show that their heart was shattered into a hundred pieces.
Derek sat down on one of the couches, but had to get up again as her doorbell filled up the silence.
I walked over to Mrs. McAllister and wrapped my arms around her fragile figure.
She broke down but I only held her tighter.
"You're gonna be okay. You have all of us now. I'm pretty sure Rose is happy too." I spoke.
"Who was it?" Lenny asked Derek has he once again joined us.
"Nobody. Must be a joke." He replied.
"As Valerie said before, this is a happy dinner. Let's not turn it into waterworks." Derek said. "Brianna, will you help me keep all the dishes inside?"
Brianna nodded and picked up her dish with mine and Lenny's.
Derek picked up the rest and followed her.
After five minutes, Brianna walked outside and poked my shoulder.
"Can you come in the kitchen for a second?"
I nodded and wiped my own tears before getting up.
"What's wrong?" I asked her, walking towards the kitchen.
"Derek knows." She answered.
"Derek knows what?" I furrowed my brows.
"He knows that Rosalind didn't commit suicide."
Hello Angels!!
I had to write this chapter five times. I wasn't content with it at all.
I finally came up with this version and it's satisfying.
I really hope that you liked this.
Things are soon going to pick up the pace, which means a storm full of drama is going to hit this book soon.
