Chapter 48: A Killer's Speech.
"I swear to god, I will murder you if it means I get to do," Brianna threatened me.
"I found you unconscious on the floor because of Derek! Excuse me if I'm worried," I yelled back.
"You almost died getting Jordan out of jail," she said.
I folded my arms and looked at the others. Blake was standing next to me, in the same posture as me. Jordan and Kelly had decided it was better to stay silent and let us have our banter but it was clear on their faces that they wanted to get out of the tensed room for a breather.
"Fine," I sighed. "You have defended me, your highness. Please, accompany us."
Soon after, Brianna's vicious eyes turned soft as she let out a loud laugh.
"Kelly and I have to call our precinct and let them know we would be coming soon, why don't you'll carry on. We will meet you at the car," Blake informed and left with Kelly.
"How are you feeling now?" Jordan asked Brianna as I cleaned the room.
"Much better. Valerie's bed is way more comfortable than the hospital's bed. I mean, it was like sleeping on a rock," she smiled and Jordan let out a forced giggle.
"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you," he spoke. "I was just so mad at Derek that everything around me shut down. I didn't mean to cause you harm."
Instead of putting the pillow down, I turned around along with it and creepily looked at the two of my friends talking.
Jordan had never spoken with Brianna in such a tone. It was so foreign, that I couldn't comprehend it either. Because of the guilt, the first thing he did when Brianna was conscious was apologise and he had been apologising to her since.
"Again, Valerie was more hurt when she tried to get you out of jail and you did not apologise to her this much. What's gotten into you?" Brianna popped her brow.
As much as I wanted to intervene, I bit my lower lip to stay quiet and continued to eavesdrop. To make myself look busy, I opened my closet and started adjusting a few of my things.
"No- it's just that I- I mean, I did apologise to Valerie too, but she- I guess you do have a point," Jordan said. "I don't know why I'm apologising this much. It's not like you died."
"Jordan," I finally spoke. "You're not helping yourself."
He awkwardly nodded and then left the room making me guffaw after holding it in for such a long time.
"Men are cute when they are trying to talk about their emotions," I said in between my laughter.
"He is not like this!" Brianna widened her eyes as she walked over to me. "Why did he just pull a Blake?"
"You did not just-"
"I did," she smugly said.
"It feels good, doesn't it?" I asked. "Finally waking up without worrying to arrest Derek."
"I cannot wait to listen what he could possibly have to say to explain himself. God, I wish I could slap that asshole," she gritted her teeth.
"I'm proud of how far we have arrived," I mentioned and sat next to Brianna on the bed. "I hope you don't forget you dear friend after going back to the city."
"Shut up, drama queen," she rolled her eyes and got up. "Let's go, we need to see two men about a murder."
I followed Brianna and walked to the car. Kelly was still on her phone, presumably talking to her boss and Blake gave me a sweet smile when he saw me.
We got into our designated seats and left.
Upon arriving the station, my stomach churned a little. All this time I was preparing myself for the day to arrive and when it did, I was afraid.
What could I possibly have to fear now? Rosalind was finally getting justice and Derek and Lenny were behind bars. Not only us, but the entire town felt a little calm today.
The mystery was finally solved.
So why was I experiencing the fear? Maybe I would find out after going inside.
The air was a little tense in the room that we were supposed to be waiting in. There was only window and it provided only minimum sunlight.
Brianna and I stayed close the entire time as it wouldn't take a scholar to figure out that she was feeling the same emotions as me.
"Okay so," Blake whispered grabbing out attention. "Derek and Lenny will do everything in their power to get inside your head and try to mess it up. But do not give him permission. Hmm?"
The two of us nodded and glued our eyes on the rusty door that creaked open, revealing two guilty criminals.
Lenny looked absolutely drained of energy. It hadn't even been two whole days and he had dark bags under his eyes, a patchy face and a fragile body. On the other hand, Derek had his signature smug smile with glowing blue eyes.
"A very good morning," Derek greeted us as he took a seat in his assignment chair. "Please, have a seat."
"Why did you do it?" I murmured.
"Oh, so we are past the formalities," Derek scoffed.
"Answer her question," Brianna demanded.
"How's your head Bri Bri?"
"I'm perfectly fine," she smiled back, walking closer to the table and the chair and taking a place in the middle one. "You know, I'm actually a lot better than fine. I woke up today morning next to my friend. A friend whom I hadn't seen for a really long time before because of a stupid fight and I would have thanked you for that, but I'm not gonna. You know why? Because you're absolutely a nobody who deserves zero recognition."
After hitting a nerve, Brianna relaxed and sat back, folding her arms and tapping her floor.
"Do you really think psychology would work on me?" He rose an eyebrow, genuinely interested in an answer.
"Of course not," Jordan joined. "But we just wanted to let you know that this smugness that you have along with a sense of some sort of achievement is utterly useless. Because the only thing you did achieve was screwing your entire future because of your petty insecurities and jealousy."
I exchanged confused looks with Blake and Kelly as I saw Jordan sitting next to Brianna.
Derek than looked at me for some harshness, but I just silently joined my friends on the chair and looked at him coldly.
"Answer my question, Derek," I asked calmly. "You know it's absolutely unnecessary to keep up your attitude. It's over. You're caught."
"You wanna know why I did it?" He asked as if he was confirming and asking us to brace ourselves. "I'll tell you why I did it. I did it because I hated my life. With her insistence, I built my own company. It wasn't much, but it was enough for me. And the second I accepted that I did something great, I suffered from a major loss. Rosalind did provide me with as much support and comfort as she could, but I wasn't content with myself. If only she hasn't pushed me to do build anything, I would have been happy working for my father. She gave me false hope and then crushed it."
"The loss you suffered was because your partners cheated on you. Rosalind had nothing to do with it," Brianna pointed out.
"She didn't. But she could have continued to support me. Then she was raped and pregnant and this stupid gang member convinced her to stand up for herself and start being selfish."
Jordan shifted in his chair but did not break his eye-contact.
"Plus, of course, she was pregnant and that would bring the family name down. So I tried pursuing her to abort the baby, but she said that it was none of my business."
"It really wasn't, but proceed." I said.
"My parents never admitted it, but Rosalind was their favourite child. Even after getting herself knocked up, they favoured her. My dad was going to give his entire company to Rosalind. Rosalind, a naive girl who knew nothing about business. How blind could they have been?!"
"So, you killed your sister because she was preferred over you and was inheriting something you thought was your right?" Jordan asked.
"Yes," he nodded. "And I don't regret it. At all."
"Go on," Brianna whispered in my ear.
"What?"
"I know you've been quiet because you're psychoanalysing him. So speak. Attack him."
I cleared my throat before speaking, "Derek, after a certain age of being a teenager, you stopped growing up mentally. The reason that you're father did not give you his company was because of the rash decision you took. You could have had better partners, but you finalised the ones you wanted a lot earlier, resulting in the cheating and your loss."
"And, Rosalind was never the preferred child," I continued. "Your parents saw something all of us failed to see. Her selfless was taking a toll on her. The reason they talked to her more and spent more time with her was because she could feel loved and acknowledged. It's observed that the people who are lost selfless are also the most lonely and misunderstood. It was true in our case. As her big brother, you were supposed to understand all of it, but instead, you gave into your desires and lost the battle with yourself."
"You, mister Lenny Grande, are no less," Jordan spoke in a very sassy tone. "I thought you loved her."
"I did, but then you came into her life," he spat with hatred.
Instead of being offended or hurt, Jordan scoffed at the accusation. "This again?" he asked as if tired of constantly repeating himself.
"Rosalind chose me to be in her life. When you were busy blaming her for being infidel, I was the one who went to all of the doctor's appointment with her. So, please, stop blaming me for this nonsense. I'm done feeling bad. I'm so over it."
With that, Jordan left the room filled with hatred amongst other emotions. Brianna followed behind silently and I wanted to leave to, but something made me glued to the chair. I felt paralysed.
"Lenny?" I asked. "Do you regret it?"
"It doesn't matter, because the harm is done and I gotta live with it," he said in a small whisper and left. One of the guards walked behind Lenny, escorting him to his cell.
Now, the only people left in the room were me, Derek, Blake and the other guard.
"Why did you send the notes?" I finally questioned with a broken voice.
"I may have committed the murder, but you are too be blamed equally for it. All of you," he breathed out. "You have the guts to tell me I wasn't there for her when my sister needed me, you weren't even there in the same town. If you grew up, then why didn't you apologise or make the first move? You knew that she would gladly forgive you and take you back. Then why did you not do it? My ignorance and insecurities was stopping me, but what was stopping you?"
A single tear left from my eye as I weakly got up from the chair.
"Let's go, Blake."
