61. The Final Promise (2)

~ Someday when the pages of my life end, I know that you will be one of its most beautiful chapters.

Amyrah

The feeling of fear, instilled in my heart, the lapping of breaths coming out heavily beneath gasps of surprise.

I stay frozen in shock.

This Raman-- or whatever the guy's name was practically--- I mean literally--- ACTUALLY--- is right in front of my eyes.

What in the world is happening!?

I step back and he steps forward. Step by step. Seconds tick in.

Is this a freaking movie or what!?

He took huge steps forward lunging towards me, the movement catching me by surprise and I ducked down, running to my right.

I ran.

Screaming like a maniac.

Okay--- I should seriously take a chill. HOW COULD I TAKE A CHILL!? This guy is going to kill me. Oh Allah!

I gathered my nerves and turned towards him. Making my eyes glare at him, I pointed my finger, "HEY, YOU! STOP RIGHT THERE!"

He nodded.

I--- What? He nodded? I nodded back, "Good boy. Now slowly take steps behind."

HE ACTUALLY DID IT!

"Very good, very good," My heart burst with a déjà vu.

Zameer, please come quick! I internally prayed. Ya Allah, please help me get rid of this Raman---uh---

"Hey, what's your name?" I blurted out.

Great.

Great.

You just guaranteed your death certificate! You stupid hooman!!!

"Amyr..ah..." He slurred out.

Oh my Allah.

Where's my phone!? I hysterically looked all over, then remembered that it was in our room.

I ran. He followed me nonchalantly.

I run pathetically into our room and grabbed the phone, dialling Zameer's number.

Zameer's phone rang. And I heard the ringing. I heard it--- which means--- oh nooo!!! Zameer's phone was in our room! He hadn't taken it! Oh Allah!!

I hear a noise and gasped in horror.

THERE HE STOOD RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!

I'M GOING TO FAINT!

I cringed at his stare and stepped backwards, unlocking the door and ran out.

Wow. Who knew one day I'd have to run from an actual serial killer? Then I'd have focused more on my PE classes. Urgh.

I run to the gate and open it wide so he'll have a clue that now it's time for him to get lost for good.

I stay in the far corner, scrutinizing his every move with my eye. Please, Allah, let him get lost.

He walks casually towards the gate. Phew! Finally!

I see him leave.

I slowly tip toe behind him to shut the gate.

I close the---

Ya Allah!

***

3rd Person's POV

Rumaan steps out of the gate, but suddenly his head feels too heavy. Sudden pain gushes out. His head swirles, making his feet dodgy and hands quiver. He quickly moves backwards, back to the house---

And bumps into someone.

Amyrah.

Rumaan's eyes felt weird, his vision blurry. He steps forward towards Amyrah, while she keeps running backwards.

Amyrah grabs the nearby broomstick for self-defence.

"If you move, I will k..kill you!" Amyrah yelled at him pathetically, her voice quivering with fear, the broomstick in her hand pointing at him like a gun.

As soon as the words left her lips, Rumaan grabbed the broomstick.

Amyrah yelped and held on to the broomstick as if her life depended on it.

The two of them kept pulling it to their side. It was as if they were playing tug of war!

Amyrah being Amyrah, wasn't about to give up. If I let him take it, he'll hit me non-stop. So I musn't give up! She thought.

And Rumaan, he felt happy-- it felt like he was playing a game! A game with his wife, just as his mom had told him, she was his wife! So there isn't any fault in playing a game. Rumaan smiled happily--- after a long, long time.

A frustrated scowl escaped Amyrah's lips. Just as she pulled the broomstick really hard, Rumaan let go.

The broomstick banged hard on the side of Amyrah's head, causing her to scream, whilst it fell far off on the ground, as she moved back, right back--- and straight to the wall.

The pain burst through her head. The sharp edge of the wall hitting her scalp, as she swayed, falling down to the ground, her head writhling in pain. As she fell on her feet, her ankles twisted and she yelled.

Rumaan's eyes widened with confusion. He slowly steps closer, not noticing the broomstick right in front of him. His feet ran straight over it, hitting his feet as he tripped and yelled, falling straight downwards, his face kissing the floor.

Just as it had began, his demeanour changed. The feeling of hurting someone etched in his mind. With a heave he stood up and walked towards her.

Amyrah silently cried, sending a plea to her Lord, and croaked out, "Idiot, Zameer, where the hell are you? You promised to be there for me when I need you!"

She stood up painfully and got ready for her next fight, just as the broomstick flew right past her.

***

Zameer felt his father's words repeating in his mind.

He sighed, feeling guilty of leaving Amyrah alone. Geez, I shouldn't have been such an idiot. I wonder if she's alright? He thought.

Zameer quickly retraced his footsteps back to the house.

A feeling of dread came over him as he stepped inside. The gate was ajar, the place felt surreal, footprints all over the floor.

"Love?" He called out.

"Love? I know you're mad, I'm really sorry, I----"

Zameer stopped dead in his tracks.

There he was met with Amyrah sitting on the floor, head against the wall, eyes closed, hair flying all over, her shawl on the ground.

Zameer lets out a cry in hysteria.

And there he saw--- a guy. His head on the wall, his eyes closed, and a smile grazing on his lips.

"Amyrah!" He cried out, crouching beside her.

"F..finally..." Amyrah murmured.

"Love? Love? Are you okay? Please... Amyrah?" Zameer cries out, his voice muffled as he saw Amyrah's eyes closing.

He looked at the guy, seething in anger. Zameer recognized him--- Zameer knew him.

"What the hell happened here!?" Zameer screamed in horror.

Rumaan flinched. "I feel..." he mumbles sadly.

Zameer's eyes pool with tears as he slowly pats Amyrah's cheeks.

Amyrah flutters her eyes open. "Zameer he---" she points at Rumaan. "He... hit his head so many... times... it must be paining... please treat him soon... call the doctor..."

Zameer cries out hugging her. Quickly dialling the emergency number, he phoned them sending his location.

Zameer's mind couldn't comprehend on what the hell is or was happening.

He turns back to Amyrah, kissing her forehead and began slowly making her sit, draping the shawl around her and massaging her forehead, to which she kicked him.

"Don't touch my head! Can't you see my head hurts, you duffer!!?" Amyrah screams at Zameer.

Taken aback by her words, he nodded slowly and mumbled an apology.

Just then Rumaan groans out. Amyrah looks at him and cries feebly. Zameer scared out of his wits, goes towards Rumaan and slowly touches his head--- to see if he was fine.

And there he saw his answer.

Blood.

Just as the paramedics came, Rumaan fell back to the ground and breathed his last, his hands and legs turning cold.

Sheer panic crossed Amyrah's and Zameer's faces. While Zameer yelled for help, Amyrah faints into oblivion.

***

Standing outside for the past hour, Zameer's mind was in a frenzy. His head buried in his hands, his quiet sobs wavering across the hospital hall.

Everything was sudden.

He didn't know what he should do. He was flabbergasted, his mouth agape as they shifted Rumaan to the mortuary and Amyrah to the ICU.

Three hours flew by.

Zameer sat in the prayer mat the whole time, praying silently.

It was then he heard a voice calling out to him. Turning his head, he found Shehzad, crouching beside him.

"Shehzu, you... know something bad happened. I... what should I do now? It's my fault.." Zameer sniffs childishly.

Shehzad embraces him. "Don't be absurd, Zamy, nothing's your fault. Everything will be fine soon."

Zameer kept numb.

"Come, the others are waiting for you."

Others? Zameer was confused.

The two of them left to meet them, their families, only to see that they all were either crying or in hysteria. They look at Zameer and immediately stopped their cries, while Zehra and his mother embraces him.

Why were they even here? Zameer thought glumly. He, at the moment, wished to see only his wife, his Amyrah.

Just then they saw Rumaan's parents, crying their hearts out. Even though Zameer or his family hadn't known him much, but the sadness, tears of anguish and pain left their eyes. They were human after all.

Cries.

Pain.

Tears.

***

The hustle bustle of the hospital woke peacefully sleeping Amyrah up. She groaned as her eyes open right to the bright light.

Oh my gosh! Ya Allah! I am actually in Heaven! Amyrah thought frightened.

"She's awake!"

"Check the patient!"

Oh? I'm on Earth.

Amyrah glared at the nurse who tried to push her back from sitting up.

"I'm fine!" Just as the words left her lips, she hissed, her hain exploding in pain.

The nurse gives her a smug look.

Amyrah wanted nothing more, but to give her a hard slap, but she just sighed in defeat and lay back.

Minutes later, the door barged open and Zameer ran towards her. Amyrah glances at her husband, her Zamir, her heart, her Zameer.

"Love!"

Amyrah extends her hand forward, to which Zameer clasped it and embraced her softly.

Zameer sobs.

For what he dosen't know. Neither of them knew. But he cries, sobbing. And Amyrah continues hugging him tight.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Zameer chants again and again. Amyrah shook her head with a smile.

They stay like that for a long time.

"How's Rumaan?" Amyrah croaks out, finally remembering his name.

Zameer's lip quivered. "His janaza will take place tomorrow after Zuhr prayers."

Amyrah shuts her eyes as she recalled the memory of him grabbing the broomstick and just as he was about to hit her, he falls to the ground and bangs his head on the wall, over and over again, all the while leaving Amyrah yelling to stop.

Tears leak through her eyes silently, as the two of them sobbed in their embrace.

"You broke your promise, Zameer."

Before he could reply, the door opens again and all their family members come in. Amyrah gasped in surprise. Why are they here? She looks at all of them and gives them a smile.

They shower their kisses and embrace each other. Her aunt, Zameer's and Shehzad's mothers cry their hearts out.

Zehra kissed her forehead, Humaira keeps staring at her as if she was unsure Amyrah was right in front of her eyes, and Bushra cried nonstop as usual.

Ammar and Rayzah began crying hysterically. Aahil and Shehzad hugged Zameer. Amyrah's uncle, Shehzad's and Zameer's father stood timidly next to each other.

"Guys?" Amyrah whispered. Her words couldn't be heard as the cries grew louder.

She tapped the nearby table and said loudly, "I'm not dead! Please stop crying!"

The elders gasp hearing the word dead, and began crying even more. Amyrah rolled her eyes at their tactics.

Almost twenty minutes later, the doctor ushered them away, telling that their time was over. Amyrah's aunt clawed at her, "Who are you to tell me my visiting time is over!? She's my daughter! I have the right!"

The nurse gawked at her and gave them ten more minutes.

It was then, at that moment, they all hear the loud and clear voice of the Maghrib azaan.

Allahu Akbar - Allahu Akbar.

They all look through the window, at the light blue sky. It was the promise of life in the darkness, a sense of warmth overlapping them all. It was a vastness bringing about humbleness and gratitude, a sense of coziness.

Home.

No matter the years that passed, they all saw that night sky as a fresh gift given anew. It was the moment that their eyes smile wholeheartedly and their breathing deepen with a sense of euphoria.

They stare deep into the sky, each face mirrored a different emotion.

They had fought.
They had cried.
They had their moments of weakness.
They had faced heartbreak.
They had broken beyond repair. They had lost their loved ones.

They had loved.
They had smiled.
They had healed.
They had laughed.
They had grown.
They had survived.
They had learned.

Standing closer to each other.

Side by side.

They promised to never let go.

Amidst all, this place was which had given them all solace. A new begining. A new hope. This was where they turned more close, more sincere and more comfortable towards their expressive nature, towards their Lord and towards Allah's mercy.

Zameer clasps her hands.

"I promise, I won't let anything happen like this ever again, love."

"Promises are meant to be left unfulfilled, Zam."

It was then, at that heartwarming moment, the sun descends from it's horizon.

Amyrah closes her eyes tiredly.

A tear trail down Zameer's cheek.

Please don't cry.
I never really left you.
And we never said goodbye.
So don't be sad without me.

Know that one day will come.
And you'll see me again.
For now I'll live within you.
So don't be sad without me.

Just look up at the sky,
The stars twinkle by,
See, you are never alone.
So don't be sad without me.

I am always there with you.
I'm always there for you.
You are never alone.
So don't be sad without me.

So don't be sad without me.

Like all ends,

At that moment, maybe, just maybe,

She had met hers as well.

And like all the promises,

Her's was left unfulfilled too.
