Chapter 16

Calum's PoV

"Welcome the Australian Band, 5 Seconds of Summer!" The host cheered as the crowd erupted into whoops and applause. We walked out, grinning from ear to ear as we took our seats on the plush white sofas and looked over to Drew Harris, the host for ABC today. Today was a big day for us, the first time we were promoting our new single, discussing our album and then doing a live performance. Our newest work was about to be shown to the world and we were buzzing. "Ah it's great to have you boys here!" Drew said, the word boys not sitting right with us. Hell, we were all in or mid to late twenties now, we'd grown up a lot since our "she looks so perfect" days.

"It's great to be here, we're really excited." Ashton took the high road and continued the interview without so much as a twitch in his grin.

"So let's start with the most important stuff!" Drew clapped his hands together and got a few 'oohs' from the crowd. We all leaned in in anticipation waiting for the questions. "Ashton, how are things with you and Bex? We've noticed it's gone quiet on social media with the two of you?" We all sat back in annoyance. Great. It was going to be one of those interviews.

"Really? I thought it was going to be about the album." Ashton said with a lighthearted tone, yet enough of a dig for the host to notice, yet his grin remained frozen on his face. "Yeah, we're doing good thank you. We just thought it'd be nice to make memories that we kept to ourselves instead of shared to fans. Just some time to really understand each other."

"Amazing!" Drew clapped his hands together like a performing seal. We knew from that moment this interview was going to be a pile of shit and nothing to do with the album we'd spent years making. "Lukey? How's Sierra?" Luke nodded and offered a small smile.

"She's great thanks."

"Keeping cards close to your chest I see..." Drew wound him up, looking out at the crowd. "That normally means something big is due to happen." He winked over-dramatically. The crowd whooped again, making me sink further in my chair. This crowd were eating out of his hand and it was sad. He should have been asking about our music, how we wrote and how we worked together! "Michael? How's fatherhood treating you?" At least Michael was happy with the question, knowing it gave him a chance to gush about his child.

"Amazingly thank you Drew. I never knew I could love another person so much in such a short space of time. Honestly, Crys is amazing too. She just took it all in her stride and helped me along the way too." The crowd ahh'd and clapped Michael's speech which made him smile even more.

"Brilliant! At least all the cheating rumours have died off now, eh?" Drew finished, laughing as Mike's face dropped, throwing me a glare as if to call him something he couldn't say on air. My palms began to sweat as I suddenly realised the host was going to be on me. He was probably going to bring up such shit to make himself look better and I don't know if I'd be able to handle that. If I didn't snap at him I'd end up storming off and neither would be good for us and our album. "And Calum... finally over to you." I took a deep breath in as my three brothers looked over to me with sympathy, knowing I had the most drama for him to talk about. "How is your new wife?" I waited for the rest of the question - but that seemed to be it. I let out a chuckle as I relaxed, ready to say my piece.

"She's great thank you." I kept it short and sweet, hoping to get out of it before he brought up the thing I didn't want to talk about. I'd managed to divert the conversation away from Poppy's cancer with my band mates, but I knew I wouldn't be able to do it forever.

"How's the baby?" He asked straight after, that same malicious Cheshire Cat grin making me nervous.

"Umm, yeah. We've only got a couple of months left until we meet our little one. Poppy's handling the pregnancy really well." I tried to keep it short again yet somehow I knew he wasn't done.

"Beautiful. Aren't they just the cutest couple?" Drew looked out to the crowd with his hands wide open. The crowd began to applaud. "It's a shame you've had so much bad luck though, isn't it? I mean Kyle, Naomi, Cancer... We're all hanging on to find out what's next! It's like a soap opera and we're all enjoying it very much." My face fell as I glared at Drew, receiving subtly shaking heads from my band mates.

"I don't feel it's fair to call our lives a soap opera. Yes, it's had its moments but we are stronger than ever now we are out the other side of it." I tried to cover it up, smiling back to Drew once more like sticking my middle finger up at him. Drew shifted in his chair and looked over to a screen behind him. A photo appeared of Poppy and Sam walking along together, him laughing at something she said. To the four of us, we knew it was innocent but the crowd gasped in shock.

"Stronger than ever? Then may i ask who this is?" Drew threw yet another smirk over at me whilst I fidgeted in my chair. This was probably the worst interview I'd ever had to do.

"That is Dr Sam Forrester. He was Poppy's doctor whilst she went through her cancer treatment. He's a great friend to all of us." I looked at my brothers who nodded happily. I glanced back to Drew to see the smile turning into a sneer. He was about to come out with something awful.

"Was Poppy's doctor?" He queried. I swallowed heavily.

"Yeah, when she had the first symptoms and was unwell." I declared, not sure where this was going.

"Well, this photo was taken earlier today. So what are they now if not a patient and doctor?" The crowd gasped and my face dropped as I looked at the photo. That was the outfit I'd seen Poppy in this morning when I'd left her to come here. Why didn't she just tell me she was meeting him?

"As I said, they're good friends. Since when are friends not allowed to walk down the road having a coffee?" I desperately tried to cover up my shock. "Can we move on now?"

The rest of the interview seemed to go by in a blur as Drew shot out questions about the album which the others luckily answered whilst I stayed quiet and drowned in my own thoughts. What were they doing together? Had she gone to an appointment without me?
