Chapter 24
Calum's PoV
We continued the interview like nothing had happened - we had to, despite all our eyes widening at each other in worry. Michael was consumed with guilt, I could see him crawling into himself as he gazed towards the door Ashton and Poppy had run out of. He barely touched his coffee too, letting it get cold before he even bothered taking a sip. I could tell the presenters were even scared, their hands clasped in worry as they tried to act professional. It was hard for us all but we knew the work needed to be done.
Finally, after a long and dragged out conversation, they finally played our new song and we all got up, dashing out to try and find Ashton and Poppy to see what the damage was. Michael hung back, not entirely sure if he wanted to know what he'd caused but as we heard the raised voices from the corridor, we all knew it was bad.
"Bex, it's not-" Ashton had said but it was quickly interrupted.
"I don't want to hear it. I know what I saw." She flung the door to our left open and stormed out, stopping in her tracks as she laid eyes on us.
"Everything okay?" I quizzed carefully, offering her a smile in the hope it would help.
"Ha." She said bluntly. "Well, maybe you should go and ask your wife. Clearly she and Ashton's relationship is something different to what we'd been led to imagine. Like having one of you isn't enough." She scoffed. I saw shadows appearing behind us and the presenters were stood with us with cheeky grins on their faces. They had the gossip they needed for the next part of their show.
"I don't-" I shook my head, wondering what she could be implying about my pregnant wife, someone who never wanted to upset anyone. Bex, clearly furious, folded her arms and stuck her hip out, letting out a tut of frustration that I didn't instantly follow what she meant.
"The paps were right, they must have read the signs." She continued cryptically. "I went in there to see how my boyfriend was." She said boyfriend in a raised tone as her gaze darted to the door she'd rushed out of. "And he and Poppy were cuddling, all cosy and loved up." The door to the left flung open again.
"You're so dramatic Bex!" It was Poppy's turn to rush out, freezing on the spot as soon as she saw all of us. I waited with bated breath to hear what she was saying. "He literally hugged me as a thank you for helping him and he was happy he didn't need to go to hospital." She looked over at me with a sorry expression. Sorry that she was caught or sorry that there was drama over nothing? My mind was torn at which it was. Ashton and Poppy had always been incredibly close and at the beginning the paps loved to speculate that there was something going on between the two of them but luckily it wasn't true - or so I was led to believe.
"He was literally spinning you round." She added bluntly, not giving a care in the world to how she came across to anyone. She was mad. I looked back over to Poppy who merely looked away in embarrassment.
"I was thankful that it didn't need hospitalisation Bex. I'm a fucking drummer, if I couldn't use my hand there'd be trouble not only from management but all our tour people." Ashton looked up at the ceiling as if to gather strength. "Alright? I'm sorry that it looked that way to you. I was just happy that it was going to be alright."
"Pfft." She spat, shaking her head. Poppy sighed heavily.
"Bex, it was innocent. We're just friends, Ashton loves you. I love Calum. We just hugged and laughed it wasn't like we were making out in the room! I think you're letting past relationships cloud your judgment and it's making you overreact." Poppy was trying her best not to sound angry but still used words enough that she could realise she was acting irrationally. I could tell by both of their attitudes that this wasn't what Bex was making out - not to mention Poppy was married to me and pregnant with my child. I doubt cheating on me with my band mate was even on her mind considering everything we were going through. Well, I hoped it wasn't.
"Cal, come on now. Don't be blindsided." Bex continued. "You're telling me that you think their 'friendship' is a little too much?" She used air quotes for the word friendship. Once again my eyes fell on my wife and my best friend. "They're always with each other, they have private conversations, they hang out together, they message each other, Ashton knows all her secrets, they eat out together, they have inside jokes..." I felt like Bex was desperately reaching in order to have someone side with her, but the truth was I really didn't see the issue. They'd always got on really well, two creative minds and out-of-the-box thinkers, I always knew they'd get along like a house on fire. Ashton was even there to give me the kick up the bum to save my relationship with Poppy. He was just a loveable guy.
"I'm sorry Bex, I'm just not seeing it. I'd assume they would have been a little more embarrassed if they were caught doing something they shouldn't have." Luke added, practically reading my mind. Luke shrugged to try and soften the blow.
"Look, this was all my fault. I'm sorry Ash. I feel so bad!" Michael one arm hugged Ashton and looked down at his cling film wrapped hand.
"It's fine, man. It was an accident." Ashton shrugged, returning the hug and making Michael feel better. Bex was still fuming, her gaze lingering on me as she thought of what to say. It appeared she wasn't even thinking about those surrounding us or what building we were in, she was going to shout about it whether we liked it or not.
"I wouldn't be so happy Calum. You need to be careful, for all you know that baby isn't even yours."
