Chapter 31
Poppy's PoV
Everyone else had arrived and got acquainted with my old friend and their new nurse and the guys had taken off to get ready for hair and makeup before they had the Q&A on air and then performed their new single Easier. Leanne and I took our seats in the 'Doctors room' and caught up on everything that had happened since Terry had ruined our friendship all that time ago. It was weird because we spoke like no time had passed, yet we knew we had years worth of information to catch up on!
"I'm sorry, I just can't get over all of this." Leanne said with surprise in her tone. She smiled widely as if proud of me and what I'd achieved which was something I was not used to seeing. I smiled softly back at her. "You and I were student nurses who were trying to be independent and now you're the nurse to a famous band, you've married one of them - who may I just add is not only gorgeous but an absolute sweetheart - and you're pregnant with his child? I can't even begin to express my happiness but also my insane jealousy of your life!" She let out a laugh as she put a hand on my arm. "I'm so proud of you." I laughed back and shook my head.
"Believe it or not you're the first person to say that to me!" I shrugged. "But it means a lot coming from you so thank you. It's not been easy, as you probably would know from all the news articles and research you did, but I wouldn't change it for the world." I turned my focus to her. "So what have I missed in the wonderful world of Leanne?" She let out a big sigh, settling into the chair more before she continued, she pulled a hairband off her wrist and quickly shoved her hair into a messy bun.
"Well I moved in with my parents after I left you and Terry and finished studying. I met the woman of my dreams at that hospital and we've now moved in together. She's really great and so supportive despite my meltdowns because of work." She smiled reminiscently as she spoke about her partner. "She's a teacher at a primary school, so we manage to get some time together during the holidays but sometimes we go a while without really spending time with each other..." she crossed one leg over the other and put her hands in between her knees. "But that nursing job was running me ragged, I just had to get out. So this opportunity means more to me than you can imagine! The guys seem really down to earth which is a relief, part of me was worried that we'd end up being bossed around by some Diva and-" we were suddenly cut off with someone shouting through the studio.
"Help! Someone help. We need a doctor!"
The two of us glanced at each other and shot to our feet in perfect sync. We ran out of our room, though Leanne was a lot faster than me, grabbed a first aid bag and we headed towards the shouts where the receptionist and security guard we had greeted were kneeling over someone on the floor. It didn't take me long to recognise the familiar pattern of the suited man.
"Thomas." I muttered to myself as Leanne skidded down beside the guy, and my thoughts were confirmed as soon as I saw his face. He was unconscious but I knew very well it was our taxi friend. "Check his cv, Thomas Akua, he was here for an interview today. We need to know about any underlying health conditions." I ordered the receptionist who quickly ran off and the security guard backed off towards the door again. I turned to Leanne. "We met him on the way here and... well, we shared a taxi. He was very nervous, shaking and anxious about the interview."
"Shaky and anxious? Could he be diabetic?" Leanne asked as she checked his vital signs which were all looking bad. She lay him in the recovery position
"Hypoglycaemia?" I questioned and she nodded. "Check his bag for glucagon, in case he's type 1." Leanne moved his bag towards us and began to pick out anything blocking her view. Leanne finally pulled out the injection and with a nod from me, she administered the injection. The next few minutes felt like an eternity but Thomas eventually stirred and groggily moved himself to a seating position.
"Ah jeez." He breathed out as he took in all of us around him. "Poppy?" He looked at me and offered a tired smile.
"Thomas." I greeted. "I guess you wanted to make a lasting impression?" I added humour to the situation and he let out a tired chuckle. "Leanne, please can you head to the kitchen and see if they've got any carbohydrate snack."
"I was too nervous to eat breakfast this morning." Thomas admitted as he rubbed his hand over his head.
"No job interview is worth your health Thomas. Please be careful." I said softly, wanting to deliver the news without being too harsh. Had he not woken up nicely following that injection he would have ended up in hospital. "Let your diabetic team know too, just for them to monitor you a little closer for a bit." He nodded in agreement just as Leanne came back armed with snacks. She handed them to him and he thanked her softly.
"Is there anyone we can call to come and collect you?" Leanne asked, equally as softly spoken as I had been to him previously. He nodded and pulled his phone out, dialling a number and handing it over to her. She spoke to Thomas's girlfriend who was obviously worried and offered to get him straight away. We waited with him until she arrived and not long after they left, the band came back out into the foyer looking around for us.
"Interview is done babe, we're just about to set up for the song." Calum came out with a grin, happy with how that interview went in comparison to some of the others. Michael, as always, was more blunt.
"What took you so long? Too busy gossiping?" Michael laughed, the others rolling their eyes and snickering at us. Leanne wasn't used to his bluntness so her eyes widened whilst I tutted in response.
"Actually, Clifford, we were helping a guy who came for an interview who had hypoglycaemia and collapsed. He just left." I gestures towards the door.
"You what?" Michael's change in tone was almost instant and, as always, very satisfying. "Is he okay?"
"With us there, of course." I said confidently, and just like that I felt a whole lot better about leaving the band in the capable hands of someone else, especially if it was going to be Leanne. With an 'in your face' smirk, I took off with Leanne and made our way into the studio where the guys began to practice ready for their live interview.
