Chapter 3: The Hungarian Horntail
Suddenly I get up. "Lets go for a walk!" I announce loudly. I wrap my hand around Draco's wrist and start dragging him down the walk.
"What do you mean go for a walk?" He asks, annoyed. "We just got here!" He flings his hands up in the air, or at least, he tries to. I hold on to his wrist tightly and he just glares at me. I smile back and say,
"No silly. I mean the walk." I reach for the map. "That's funny," I say to myself. "I could have sworn I put my map in my back right pocket." Draco hears what I say and looks for himself.
"Its in the back left pocket dummy." He reaches over and pulls it out, lightly hitting me on the head with it to give emphasis to the word "dummy." I roll my eyes and open the map. I scan it quickly until I see the words I'm looking for.
"Walk," I emphasize with a point. "See. Nature walk. I want to do that."
You're kidding, right?" Draco asks in disgust. "Of all the fun and rides and candy here all you want is to go on a nature walk? Hermione if you wanted to do that we could have just gone for a walk in my mum's backyard. Save us plenty of money, it would." He's totally aghast.
"Yoda, I was not aware you are." I joke.
"Huh?" He asks confused.
"Oh, right. Sorry Draco. Its a muggle thing. Star Wars. I forgot."
"Star...Wars...?" Draco looks very confused. "That sounds pretty dumb..."
"Yeah well." I stop myself and think "this is the guy who relied on his father for everything right? Who's the stupid one now!?"
"Hm? What was that Mione?" He asks.
"That's not my name Draco." Then to distract him. "Lets go on that." I point at the map. Unluckily for me I just so happened to point to a ride labeled "The Hungarian Horntail." The same name as the dragon Harry rode on during the Triwizard Tournament. "Fuck," I whisper and bite my lip. Hard. The blood starts to flow.
"Really Hermione?" He asks me in shock. "I didn't think that would be your type of ride." I put on a fake smile and roll my eyes.
"Yeah right Draco. I'm so scared. Draco, who's the Gryffindor here!?" Now it's his turn to roll his eyes. "Let's goooooooooooo!" I grab his wrist again and start running.
We show up and I regret my decision on a ride almost immediately. It's a terrifying roller costar type thing. Now don't get me wrong I'm not a wimp, but I had never seen anything like it before. "Its not... real? Is it?" I ask Draco in a hushed whisper.
"No of course not, darling." Then, "are you scared," he says with a sly grin. Thats when I slap him. Right across the face, same as I did in the third year. "Oi! What do you have to say for yourself?" An angry Draco is rubbing his sore cheek.
"That felt good." I let out a girlish giggle and get a strong surge of Gryffindor courage. "Never mind that. Lets go have fun."
"Never mind that my ass," Draco mutters. "That HURT."
"Excuse me and what was that about your ass?" I laugh because I know I have won. Of course right at that moment the Horntail decides to spray fire on us. Except, it isn't real fire because Draco and I aren't bursting up in flames. Instead, there is a rather pleasant tingly feeling.
"Wicked."
"What was that?" Draco asks.
"Hm?" I ask back.
"Oh. Never mind. I uh...about that walk you wanted to take?" He's nibbling on his upper lip.
"Oh my Draco," I joke, "are you scared?"
"Lets go!" He screams. We walk up the path to the dragon. We enter the gate to the ride and choose a spot on the dragon. I sit down comfortably and look around. I'm suddenly not afraid anymore. I know that this is just a ride and nothing like the dragon we rode from Gringots. Draco on the other end—
"Ouch!" He screams. He waves his arms wildly against the seat. "Where is it? Where is it?" He mumbles angrily.
"Where is what?"
"Something bit me. Or pricked me. Or something. And it HURT!" He whines like a small child. In fact, the child in the row behind us decides to mimic Draco's whine at that very moment. "Oh shut u—" he starts to say but is cut off by the Horntail lifting up in the air. Draco falls down hard into his seat and grips on tightly.
I, however feel as though I am on top of the world. The Horntail rises up delicately and then immediately swoops and soars through its area of the sky. The magic fire spews from his mouth onto people watching and taking pictures from a nearby viewing bridge. The children behind us are cheering and screaming. I release my tight grip and let myself feel like I'm flying. I look to see Draco, to see if he's enjoying this as much as I am but he's cowering in the corner of his seat trying to squish in close to me. "Scared?" I ask.
"Nah," he says in a shaky voice. When we finally land I hop off first and help Draco off. I can feel my smile stretching for miles. Draco, however, is shaking hard.
"Lets go do that," I say, pointing at the massive Ferris Wheel. As we get closer I notice that it is not, in fact, a Ferris Wheel, but a Ferret Wheel. I laugh at the sight of Draco's face but convince him to come on with me anyways.
Draco has much more fun on this ride once he is able to get over the fact that it is ferrets we are riding on. Draco has quite a history with ferrets. We pick a nice, silver ferret and climb in. The ferrets, not real ones of course, go round in a circle with the passengers inside. Just like a Ferris Wheel, sometimes we are on top and get quite a view. Other times, we are on bottom and can't see much of anything except the pavement. Overall the ride is quite fun and Draco is smiling the entire time.
Next, we go in the Niffler Tunnel. This is Draco's choice. Apparently it was his favorite ride as a child. We hop into a Niffler and it takes us underground in a mine cart type of ride. The Nifflers, again, not real, are following a bright path of shiny things. Other than that, the entire ride is dark. Its a little spooky, but also just plain fun. I feel Draco wrap an arm around my waist.
"Hermione, you're freezing," he whispers in my ear.
"No I'm not," I say. Sure it's a little chilly, but it's a warm summer day out.
"No, seriously, you're shivering. You can't even sit still." That's when I notice, like it or not, he is right. "Here."
"What's this?" I ask, grabbing what felt like fabric.
"My shirt." He replies.
"Eww Draco no put that back on you're going to get us thrown out."
"I'm wearing another one underneath," he grunts. "Just, lemme have mine back when we come into the light. Not totally believing him yet, I throw the shirt on to make him happy. It does absolutely nothing for me, but the gesture was a kind one.
"Beware, Draco, beware or you will meet your doooooooom! DOOOOM!" Suddenly a little green light flashes on a figure in white by the side of the track. We are going by too quickly to make out what it is but needless to say, Draco and I both screamed.
We come out of the dark tunnel into the bright light of day. "I thought you said that wasn't a fright ride," I start badgering him immediately for his lies"
"It's not." He says all flustered. "I swear it isn't. Or at least, it never has been before." I raise my eyebrows sky high and glare, but before the conversation can go any further I notice his shirt.
"Weird Sisters," I read, "Really Draco? I didn't know you were into them. Didn't think you were the type." I laugh and laugh. Draco's face goes bright red. He grabs his shirt and pulls it off of me. "Oi!" I shout. "What would you've done if my shirt came off with it?"
"Oops," he shrugs. I can see his worry though. He just isn't much one for apologizing. "Let's do that." He says with a glint in his eyes. He points to the one labeled Love Tunnel.
"Oh no not that one," I groan. "It's just so cheesy."
"C'mon Mione." He pushes me towards the ride. "Its our first date." I give in and let myself be led onto the little boat and soon we're floating down the river towards the tunnel. It must be the magic of the tunnel or something because I slowly find myself falling more and more in love with the boy sitting next to me. I'm falling into his grey eyes and I know he's floating in my brown ones. His face says it all. He grabs my left hand with his right and then snakes his left hand into my hair. I let my face be slowly moved closer to his. We enter the tunnel and my eyes close as darkness falls. Draco can seemingly wait no longer for I feel his lips crash onto mine.
"Oh my hello there." And as I pull away from Draco I swear I can feel the smirk.
