Chapter Twenty One
~Kanami's POV~
The weekend before Shoto's class was going to be doing a training camp, we went camping as a family. Dad booked us a campsite at one of the national parks. There were hiking trails, rock climbing spots, zip lining, treetop walkways, rapids, waterfalls, and a natural hot spring!
"There's so many fun things to do." I gasped as I looked over the brochure, "rock climbing, hiking, zip lining, river rafting, canopy walks-."
Natsuo dropped a hand on top of my head and I looked up at him curiously, "that all sounds like a lot of work, we're supposed to be relaxing."
"I think we've discovered why you have no core muscles." I teased him as I remembered him not being able to keep his balance on the surfboard in the sand when we'd gone surfing.
Fuyumi cracked up laughing.
"I have core muscles!" Natsuo playfully swatted at me and I easily ducked out of his grasp with a giggle and skipped ahead to follow Dad to our campsite.
The park tried to make things feel more private and secluded by only having two campsites per space. There appeared to be another family at the campsite next to ours. One small red tent was already constructed perfectly, and a kind looking couple was setting up a larger one next to it. The woman had a familiar shade of dusty blonde hair, the man had unruly dark brown hair and wore a pair of rectangular rimmed glasses. They politely waved over at us. I happily waved back only to realize that Fuyumi and I were the only ones who waved back.
"I think the hot spring sounds pretty relaxing." Mom spoke softly as we reached our campsite.
"I think so too." Fuyumi beamed and looped her arm through Mom's to join her.
"I guess I'm going too." Natsuo shot a wary look at our father before following Mom and Fuyumi leaving me and Shoto with Dad.
Dad said nothing as he set down the three tents he'd been carrying and all the camping gear. I'd offered to help but he refused.
"Let's go rock climbing." Shoto suggested.
"Dad, will you go rock climbing with us?" I asked with a smile.
He turned at this looking a little shocked and offered me a faint smile, "I'll get everything set up here."
"We could help and then we could all go rock climbing." I offered and threw a pleading look at Shoto.
He sighed and grabbed one of the tents to set up.
Dad looked surprised. "I'd like that."
I beamed and took a second tent to set up. With the three of us working, despite Shoto apparently never having been camping before, we got all three of the tents set up and all of our supplies in place in record time. Shoto and Dad were a little tense and awkward as the three of us made our way to the rock climbing area. As we got there I realized it was all free climbing. There weren't any ropes or anything.
Shoto suddenly stopped walking, his eyes growing wide, "let's do something else."
I turned to him curiously. He didn't really use his fire quirk a lot so maybe he wasn't confident he could slow his fall with fire if he fell. "If you fall, Dad or I can catch you." I reassured him with a smile.
"No, it's not that." Shoto reached for my hand and tried to pull me away.
I heard a familiar explosive voice coming from ahead of us and looked to see Shoto's classmate, Katsuki Bakugo, yelling at a group of university aged boys for taking so long and being in his way. The university aged boys quickly scrambled away.
"Is that Bakugo?" I asked without thinking and apparently loud enough he heard as he turned and spotted us. His eyes widened for a moment before narrowing.
"What the hell are you doing here, Icy Hot?" He scowled at Shoto before his crimson eyes flicked at me, "and mini Icy Hot."
I giggled at the nickname, "want to climb together, Bakugo?" I asked with a smile.
"...no..." Dad and Shoto muttered simultaneously.
Bakugo stared at me for a moment before shaking his head and grimacing, "that sounds awful, pass."
I thought I heard Dad muttering something to Shoto. It sounded like the word delinquent was uttered. "Okay, well if you change your mind you're welcome to join us." I smiled at him.
"Whatever." He grumbled and wandered to another section of rock to climb away from us.
Dad and Shoto simultaneously breathed sighs of relief and ushered me even farther away from Bakugo. My gaze drifted back in his direction as he started to climb. He made it look effortless. I glanced around at other experienced climbers watching how they gripped the rock and how they looked for footholds and handholds, studying their movements as we went to find a spot to climb.
"What are you doing?" Shoto asked curiously as I watched a pair of what appeared to be professional climbers.
"Studying." I murmured.
Dad and Shoto followed my gaze.
After a few minutes I smiled, "I think I got it."
Shoto frowned, "have you ever gone rock climbing before?"
"Nope!" I beamed and reached for the rocky surface before me to find my first handhold.
Dad and Shoto simultaneously cast their arms out as if to act as a security net as I stepped off the ground. I glanced down and giggled as I saw them with their arms up looking like they were waiting to catch something.
"You two look silly." I giggled and searched for my next hand hold.
Once they realized I was stable and not struggling they joined me. Dad went last to act as a safety net if either of us needed it. It took a few tries at getting handholds and footholds for me to feel comfortable and then it started to feel like second nature. Shoto was struggling to keep up.
I reached the top of our rocky bluff first with a cheer. Shoto scrambled up a few moments later and smiled as I collapsed on top of the rock with a giggle. He dropped down beside me resting his hands across his knees as he caught his breath. Dad swung up and over the rocky ledge with ease, not even looking a little phased by the climb. My gaze flicked over to Bakugo where he was climbing, he'd moved to a more challenging spot and still made it look completely effortless.
I sat up and began searching for people who were climbing down so I could study their movements. No one was currently climbing down. Did it work the same just in reverse? Were there other skills required? My stomach churned uneasily.
"Ready to climb down?" Dad asked as I got to my feet.
I peered over the edge feeling nervous. I wasn't sure I could climb down, would I get in trouble if I used my quirk?
"Kana?" Dad reached for me as I looked over the edge.
"Does it work the same?" I pondered. I'd only ever seen people climb with ropes before today and they always rappelled down.
Dad frowned, "It's similar just make sure you don't remove your hand grip until your footing feels stable. I'll go first." He glanced over at Shoto, "why don't you two climb together."
Shoto nodded and got to his feet beside me.
Dad started climbing down and waited for us to start so he could make sure we were both stable. Shoto and I began our descent together side by side. I felt nervous as I made sure my handholds were secure. It was a little disorienting climbing down as it was hard to look down for a secure foothold and it felt like I was just blindly searching with my feet where to safely step.
I was fine for the first half but then I started to get confident. My foot felt stable in a rocky crevice so I released one of my hands to grab a lower hand hold. As I did my foot slipped and I scrabbled in a panic to stabilize myself as I slipped downward. Shoto caught my wrist at the same moment a strong hand gripped my foot, giving me a safe foothold.
"Sorry." I squeaked.
"Are you alright?" Dad sounded worried.
I did a quick mental assessment. There was a slight pain in my left knee and my right elbow but it didn't feel broken. "I'm alright." I reassured them both.
Dad moved my foot to a safe and stable foot hold. "Are you steady?"
"Y-yeah." I felt bad for causing them both unnecessary trouble.
Dad let go of my foot but I could feel him hovering nearby just in case. Shoto reluctantly let go of my wrist and waited for me to move first in case I needed stabilized again. We made it back to the ground safely and I mentally kicked myself. I should have been paying more attention on my climb up so I could memorize the handholds and footholds I used and would have an easier time getting down. I'd just had so much fun climbing up that I hadn't thought how to get down without using my quirk or ropes.
Dad frowned as he looked at my knee and elbow. I glanced down now that I was no longer clinging to the rockside for dear life. My knee had a plethora of scrapes and cuts and was bleeding. It wasn't gushing or dripping on the ground but had started to drip down my shin. My elbow was a little worse and was currently dripping. Glancing around, I realized there was no sign of Bakugo and I felt a little bit deflated at this.
"Let's get you patched up before your mother sees." Dad noted, "Let Shoto or I carry you, please."
I reluctantly nodded. I hadn't wanted to cause trouble for anyone. Shoto stood in front of me and turned his back to me before kneeling down so I could easily get on his back. I sighed and climbed on his back allowing him to carry me.
"Sorry for troubling you." I murmured softly.
"I'm not." Shoto replied with a lightness in his voice. He sounded oddly happy about needing to be relied on.
I hugged him from behind, deciding to test something out, "thanks for taking care of me, Nii-chan."
Shoto stumbled slightly but managed to keep us both upright, "y-you're welcome."
"Sorry, was that weird?" I pondered.
Dad turned to look at us and I thought I saw him smile before turning back to lead the way to our campsite.
"N-No." Shoto stammered. "It's fine." The tips of his ears looked red. Had he gotten a sunburn?
Voices drifted onto the path coming from the direction of our campsite or probably the campsite next to ours. "They've got two kids with them who look about your age. You should make friends."
"Shut up, hag!" Bakugo's loud voice erupted from ahead and Shoto stumbled once more. Was Bakugo staying at the campsite next to ours?
"Bakugo?" I called curiously as we stepped off the path and into our campsite. I spotted him standing just outside of the small red tent. His crimson eyes grew wide as he spotted us before his gaze flicked to me, looking closer as he noticed Shoto was carrying me. His gaze narrowed as he looked at the blood dripping down my leg and from my elbow.
"What the hell happened to you, mini Icy Hot?!" He snapped.
"Katsuki, that's no way to talk to a girl!" The woman I assumed was his mother launched to her feet and smacked him so hard over the back of the head I thought I heard his brain rattling around inside of his skull.
"EEP!" I panicked. Should we do something? Wasn't this child abuse? I glanced over at my father to say something but he quietly ducked into his tent to find the first aid kit. "Please don't hit him." I spoke softly, worried for Bakugo's safety.
Shoto tensed.
Bakugo looked at me in awe before shaking himself out of his mild stupor, "leave me alone, hag." He grumbled, shoving away from his mother, and stomped in our direction. "What the hell happened?" He repeated once he got within reach.
Was he worried about me? He was so nice! "I was just clumsy." I offered him a smile, "thanks for worrying about me, Bakugo."
His crimson eyes widened a little and I thought I saw a faint splash of color spread across his cheeks. "Who the hell said I was worried?!"
Shoto tensed again and looked like he was about to say something but our father returned and threw a wary look in Bakugo's direction. His grip on the first aid kit made it look like it may explode if he applied any more pressure to it.
Bakugo left the campsite and headed for one of the trails without a word to anyone.
"Sorry for our deplorable son." Mrs. Bakugo offered us an apology.
I looked in the direction Bakugo had disappeared with a frown, I didn't think he was deplorable.
